That is just so awesome to me and you still manage to make the video interesting, fun to watch and easy to follow.. thank you so much for contributing to the Miata community.. you are one of the best or maybe even THE BEST Miata KZfaqr out there! When I'm making my Miata how-to video's, your video quality is my end goal. You motivate me to constantly improve my video quality and I thank you for that. Never stop making video's Greg :-)

Had to do the clutch in my Ford Ranger in 2013. Never did it before. Took two weeks. 29 bolts total to remove. Anybody can do this. The key thing is, DO NOT RUSH. The less experienced you are the longer it will take. A pro mechanic can do this in less than an hour or two. A lot of time, even now, when working on car things, I use my computer to get all of the tips and methods and not afraid to stop to do so. Never rush it.

On my 1rst try I did it in one day taking about 6-7 hours. I struggled hard getting the transmission back to the engine. I was too fatigued to lift it and balance it, but I will say using an impact gun helped alot. But on alot of my jobs I send soooo much time looking for tools and finding the torque specs.

I’m doing this right now and it’s by far the hardest thing to do for a turbo set up. If u have a shit box like every other Miata owner, you’ll soon find out that half of the bolts are rusted and the Mazda engineers decided to locate them within a millimeter from other vital parts... with that said, there’s no better feeling than finishing and having a perfectly working car

One MAJOR tip that helped me a lot when putting my transmission in was jacking up the front of the engine up just a little bit. When you take the transmission off from the engine it tends to rock forward, jacking the engine up from the front of the oil pan helps align everything.

So happy to see this video. You're a gift to the already very helpful Miata community. I replaced my timing belt a week ago, and the job went better than expected thanks to your t-belt replacement video. Also, I cannot describe how satisfying it is to finally remove an old oil seal when you've been working at it for 30 minutes in an awkward position. For me at least, using a small pick to carefully puncture the rubber towards the inside allowed me to get a small flat blade screw driver behind the seal without any damage to the sealing surfaces. Now that my clutch is starting to chatter a little, it's nice knowing I've got this video to fall back on when it inevitably starts slipping. Thanks Greg!

Just finished installing my 6 puck sprung copper ceramic clutch and 10.6lb flywheel! What was supposed to be a day’s work turned out to be three, the studs on my exhaust broke off so I ended up pulling the whole exhaust out and welding the header to the mid pipe. Just seeing this video today. I replaced my clutch on the 97 Kia sephia with Mazda BP 1.8 engine a couple years ago around the 300,000 mark. Yes the original clutch lasted that long. I used the triangle pattern to torque on the pressure plate. I also was able to get a micrometer on the flywheel without removing it and found the thickness of still be in spec and there weren't any grooves so I actually pulled the pilot bearing with the old bread and grease trick since I didn't have a puller tool. To install the new one I used a socket the same size as the outer race with a hammer to seat it. I used some 600 grit sandpaper and a buffing motion to work a stack of dimes patterns to work my way around the flywheel without removing it. I didn't really have any deep grooving of any lipping and had to reason for remove the flywheel itself. I just put a light skuff on it for extra grip. My Kia uses the same engine as the Miata, but is front wheel drive and oriented 90° clockwise for how it is in the Miata with a different transmission. Shop would charge about $2000 to do my clutch as 2 CV axles, air box, battery tray, and 3 of the 4 motor mounts along with the slave cylinder have to come off to free up the transmission. That being said it was a pain in the ass and I had to support the engine with a jack, and also had to tilt it in order to slide the input shaft out of the pilot bearing in order to remove the transmission as well as reinstall it. That was honestly the worst part of the entire job. my rear main seal wasn't leaking either, not even after 300k. I use good oil, change it often, and I'm not boosted. I'm at over 340,000 miles now and that BP engine is still in good shape and doesn't burn a drop of oil.

HOLY SHIT!!! Dude, you're not gonna believe this but it was your pull on home ave that made me buy a MIATA! I don't know if you can see me in the video, but I was in accord with my dad. I was planning to buy a gt86 but instead when I saw your Miata, it just made my heart melt. I'm not sure it was your Miata, but when I saw that Miata, it had so much life to it. Instead of puting a downpayment on a gt86, I bought my very own 1991 NA6!!!! Although this car gave me some headache, such as overheating issues and etc; this is the reason why I bought this car, to make it my own! I'm about to replace my flywheel + clutch and I stumbled on this video. When you did the pull when getting over the 805, It gave me goosebumps because I'm pretty sure it was the Miata I saw at the time. excellent video Greg! This would have made my clutch job so much easier had it been out 2 years ago. One thing I'd like to point out though. Once the transmission is down check the bellhousing, if you've got anything other than clutch dust on the walls like oil for example, check the transmission seals/gaskets as well as the rear main. At 11:54 under the front transmission cover is a paper gasket, i had a bad leak from there!

I just performed the happy meal clutch upgrade as well as Delrin bushings for the rear diff. The only items that gave me trouble were the three nuts on the down pipe nearest the header. To get them off, I put kroil on them, then heated them up with a torch. I put the socket+extension on the bolt and gave them a few wraps with a mallet. After that they came right off. Beforehand I was using an impact wrench to get things off, but it wouldn't take 2 of the 3 off, so I had to use the heat/bump method to break them free. Thanks for the Video, I watched it a few times. Vroom Vroom!

Thanks for the video man! I'm about to replace the clutch on my NA miata and I find videos so much easier to follow than the service manual. Cheers.

I think your videos are thorough and accurate. But to improve your videos for better viewing try using a small led magnetic light when getting into dark areas. Most video cameras and phones have auto iris. Which means any light coming in from behind area to be addressed causes cams to iris down. Try a simple $3 light from harbor freight and see the difference. Thanks for your videos. They have helped my son and I to spend quality time together doing mechanical projects.

Reminds me of my first major car repair I've done. A clutch in a 2000 eclipse, some borrowed tools and a 20$ wal mart ratchet set in a open air apartment parking spot. Took two weeks but I got it done :). Also, F that car it was terrible.

Great video! FYI, you can remove the shifter and fill it there, it's much easier. You still have to remove the fill plug to see when its full. Also, it's easier to place the clutch disk on the flywheel and insert the alignment tool to hold it in place, then place the pressure plate. Nothing wrong with anything you did, just thought I'd share useful tips.

The shifter turret is not connected to the gearbox itself. so that is impossible, however i agree on the putting the clutch disk in first and moving the pressure plate over it.

Just did this on the floor!! Had access to a lift but it wasn't too bad. Bell housing bolts were solid. Your vid was great. Very little figuring out in the end up because of it. THANKS

Gotta say thank you for the detailed video! I decided to drop the transmission to replace a leaky rear main seal / oil pan seal by myself off of jackstands. Not the most comfortable job but it is definitely a learning lesson.

Dude.. Imagine doing this job in Norway. It's snowing outside (in May) and everything is rusted and bolts are impossible to remove. That would suck! :( But I'm getting closer and closer! Thanks for a great video!

Going to attempt this myself flat back in the driveway… in the winter, I’ve got a lightweight flywheel clutch and a new to me trans with half the mileage, new clutch master and slave and a shifter rebuild, should be feeling great after

Greg Peters, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, tHanK yOU...! I can not believe I ran into your video and you made it stupid simple changing my year one 1990 MX-5 clutch. I can see you are a bike nut with your Tioga shirt. I used to work for Tioga & Shimano back in the 80s. When I left Tioga I cofounded onZa. I own a 90 Miata that I simply fell in love with and trust no one to work on it, and my throwout bearing started to complain, so I figured I can do it my self and just replace the whole darn thing clutch rear seal and all. I give you a 110% excellent review. Dan Sotelo aka Mr. onZa! ( : FYI: I'm going to come back to you with a question that my MX is starting to complain about.

Well done! Now that's how you drop a trans at the track btw - done it many times. It got easier when I switched to a T5, about 10 lbs easier LOL!

For those who are watching. I HIGHLY recommend that you get the pilot bearing and fowl pins pressed in at a shop. It is extremely difficult to not damage the bearing while hitting it with a hammer and socket.

Thanks for your time and sharing this change out. Figure i will be doing this in the future. Have 82K on 91, 1.6 . Don't know how long the original will last. Not in any hurry . I think i will wear a cup to protect the jewels. I try to do all repairs myself, so this video was very good for me , and again thanks for sharing your experience with the Mazda Community. Killer vid. Clutch change is also a great time to rebuild the shifter turret...as you have everything off anyway. Cuz lets be honest, most 20+ year old miatas also have torn boots, and if you have a lot of heat coming into the cabin from the center console, its because of that. Great job, Greg.

One thing I ran into while following these instructions was that the rear PPF bolts were frozen in place. They would not come off. It turns out that if you can get all of the other PPF bolts out, you can still maneuver it enough to get the trans out, but then you're really going to want to remove the shifter to give yourself more clearance up top. I also had significant trouble pulling the transmission off, because the pilot bearing froze onto the spline. I was able to get it to pull out by about half an inch but it would go no farther. I got past this by using two disc brake piston spreaders. I wedged them into the small gap I was able to make and was able to push the bearing free. Then removed them, positioned the engine, pulled and it came free.
We got sent a super weird clutch and installed it anyway
