Silicone is the correct choice for your tile shower corners, tub joint or anywhere tile meets a tile in a corner or another type of material. You never want to just grout in your corners, this can create problems, at the very least you will have cracked corners, at the worst it will cause your tile job to fail. Silicone sealant is the correct choice, look up ANSI EJ171 for all the details. An alternative Siliconized Acrylic Caulk, but it is not as flexible and will not last anywhere near as long as a Silicone caulk joint will. Silicone is much more flexible and has a much stronger bond, however it is not easy to clean and can leave a mess if you don't know the secret how to get it done quick and easy. Unlike acrylic caulks, which can be easily cleaned with water, silicone caulk needs a bit more care and know how to get a professional looking clean even joint. In this video I demonstrate an easy method that with a little practice will have you caulking with silicone in no time.

I never spray over silicone because when tooling, the silicone will not stick to the outside margins of the two walls. The tool actually slightly spreads out the silicone onto the sprayed-wall and will not stick to water-bases solutions.

Yeah I take Sal’s word as gospel … except this. All of the experts in the field - including the SWRI (Sealant, Waterproofing, & Restoration Institute) recommend against this practice. Quote from one of their technical bulletins: “Tooling should always be done with a dry tool, without the use of wet tooling aids.“

Sal, I have a flangeless shower base that has a flange you screw on and instructions state to use silicone. It's the castico shower base that I will be tiling above. Instead of silicone would you use the laticrete sealant? I feel like I would trust it more. I will also put banding from the foam board and over the flange with laticrete sealant behind it. Thoughts?

When do you use the denatured alcohol? Only with water based caulks?

Water based caulks are not silicone and can be cleaned with water, however they are not an approved ASTM C920 sealant which is what you need in tile corners.

I'd not use alcohol with acrylic caulks because it's known (to me) to dissolve acrylic paints.

I see Sal using Mapesil-T. I caulked a frequently-used shower with it 3 years ago and it still looks like new. I used backer rod behind the caulk. I've found recommendations that the width/depth ratio should be about 3/2.

@SalDiBlasi I understand that I was wondering if you silicone first and let it dry then grout or grout first let it dry then silicone. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Grout first. Otherwise silicone will get into all side gaps not filled with grout - what are you gonna do then? While the hardened grout is very easy to cut with a knife if it stick out into the gap you want to silicone. Watch some more of his videos before you start. And be very cautios with "fast-setting" grouts :-)

What ever grout product your using. They have matching caulking.

The proper term is "Coordinating" Can't match grout with silicone, but you can make it the same color. Which is exactly what I am using here Mapei grout, Mapei silicone.

I've seen a guy grout corners then silicone over it. He claims that's how it's done lol I will say it hasn't fallen out after 4 yrs but I know better
