Award-winning writer, director and producer Barry Jenkins talks with "CBS This Morning" co-host Anthony Mason about his new Amazon limited series, "The Underground Railroad," based on Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. He gives a behind-the-scenes look at creating the show, dealing with the darkness of slavery, and re-contextualizing the sacrifices of his ancestors to tell a story of survival and triumph.
Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs.

4:55 COMMENT: "...We don't need images of slaves, we need positive imagery." BARRY JENKINS: "..what I hear in that is inherently any images featuring my ancestors are inherently negative, and I just can't accept that. What it shows me is we actually need more of these images so we can take back their legacy and recontextualize it."

This series was amazing. I loved how every piece was so well thought out even the symbolism. The song that played when Caesar and Cora ran to the first safe house also played when Cora heard of Caesar's death, it also played when Cora finally seems to have found freedom at the end. I wish we had seen more of Cora and Caesar together, but I think the series did a good job of displaying what it was like to be a runaway, and how the journey of running never seemed to end because evil was everywhere. This piece was such a powerful series. We are literally living the dream that so many of our ancestors couldn't experience. I am so grateful for their strength and the torch that they carried for us, now they have passed that torch to us and they're waiting to see what we do with it.

Well done Thuso ❤️ All you Americans gather here. So you telling me you have a problem with only one South African. Now sit down with a glass of water and ask yourself why. Don’t tell me about South African telling an American story. Thuso did not write that story she’s simply acting it and doing a brilliant job. Now take a sip of that water and repeat after me “I am xenophobic” Only one South African just one ☝️

@@ladydiaspora807 Maybe maybe not. There didn't seem to be anything lacking in her ability to portray the character. The Artist behind the work saw the character in her. Familiarity doesn't mean the person more "familiar" can be the character needing to be poryrayed. Ideally, and ideologically, I agree. But the Reality is what matters.

@Londiwe Princess, I'm going to recharacterize your statement to not characterize "All Americans" but to say ' All you Americans who have a problem with a person from South Africa portraying the story of a person or people living an historically American experience.' I see people as the people or person they are. People are not continents, countries, colors, to me e.g., African -American, African, South African, Nigerian, Black. Although I do recognize and respect where a person is from, as part of their cultural identity. People are Who they are as a person more so than where they are from. This was a beautiful and powerful piece of story telling art. It takes all kinds of people to tell "Our" collective and individual stories. Thuso played her part in our story splendidly and powerfully. May Yah watch over and protect her as she sojourns with us in this land.
@simbahunter8894
@simbahunter8894 3 жыл бұрын
Because she is South African, the South Africans commenting here think that Black Americans have a specific problem with Thuso Mbedu playing the lead role in The Underground Railroad. But that isn't accurate. Nobody hates little Thuso. We don't even know anything about her, or South African actors in general, except for Charlize Theron. Rather the pushback is over the practice of casting almost all of the major roles in Black American stories with foreigners, some of whom are rude and dismissive about the very people they are portraying. In The Underground Railroad, ALL of the major roles are cast with foreign actors, even the white ones, with the exception of William Jackson Harper and the child actor Chase Dillon. One wonders why they bothered to shoot it in the US at all. While the acting may be good on an intellectual level, and white people neither care nor can tell the difference, Black Americans do feel the lack of authenticity deeply. Africans and African immigrants tend to be very naive about the depth and complexity of white American racism. They don't understand that undermining Black Americans is a deliberate strategy, and that many of the perpetrators are Black themselves. Attacking Black Americans as being "xenophobic" plays right into their hands.

Yes, the history of how the Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, and all other people who have been marginalized, discriminated against, persecuted, and abused should be told and needs to be told as well, for the exact same reasons. It's best when the story is told by someone of the same culture so the truth doesn't get watered down. Hopefully Mr Jenkins' film will inspire others to create those stories you, I and other people of color want to see.

@Gisselle ST A great historical fiction movie is 'Black Robe'. It takes place in Canada (1634), and has Algonquin and Iroquois native Americans as central to the story. There are all types of historical fiction movies regarding indigenous American tribes (even as recent as 'Hostiles' with Wesley Studi/Cherokee lineage). Remember this gem that no on ever seems to mention, however. EVERYTHING (to some degree or another) ever perpetuated against Native Americans had been done by European colonizers to African lands, tribes, and peoples, before, during, and after the first European ever killed or enslaved a indigenous/native American. Africa is at least three times the landmass of the continental contiguous U.S., and everything European powers & colonizers did throughout the Americas to subjugate, take from, and annihilate Native Americans, the same type of attrocities were perputated by Europeans vying for control of resources throughout continental Africa. Most just have no knowledge of that or were never taught, nor looked into, that European colonial history as it pertains to Africa. Anyway, definitely check out 'Black Robe' if you're seriously interested in a great historical fiction movie regarding Native Americans.
