Genetically modified organisms have been part of our diet for years. The Grocery Manufacturers Association says up to 80 percent of processed food sold in the U.S. is genetically modified and mostly unlabeled. Monsanto, one of the world’s largest producers of genetically modified seeds, is committed to innovation in agriculture, but critics say it should be more transparent. Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant joins “CBS This Morning” to address the ongoing debate over GMOs and questions surrounding their herbicide, Roundup.

American's food lacks nutrients because of the soil is depleted of nutrients plus the bad chemicals they add into farming. GMO is bad for the health even when they say it is safe. The GMO companies had bribe the FDA to overlook the negative effects of GMO. The same goes to other bad chemicals like RbST in dairy!

Pure rubbish. No good questions were asked. Why do you patent seeds (Life)? Why do you not let the farmers own their seeds? What are terminator seeds? Why were you forced to remove labels like: Environmentally friendly from your RoundUp product range? Why don't you just say YES to GMO labeling and then all the labels across the USA could be the same? You won't as you know no one would buy it.... and do you really think this guy eats GMO.... no way, GMO's are cheap and for the less priviliged the manual workers

It's a good thing. The smaller the proportion of the population making food, the more people there are available to innovate. The difference between a stone age civilization and a modern civilization is that we have fewer people devoting their lives just to feeding themselves. Read "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond if you want to know more, or just take Human Geography 101. Also, Monsanto is far, far, far from responsible for lowering the percentage of farmers. It's mostly been the invention of giant machinery such as tractors and nitrated fertilizer, without which 6 out of 7 people today wouldn't be fed.

In 1985 Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle, the chemical company that held the patent to aspartame, the active ingredient in NutraSweet. Monsanto was apparently untroubled by aspartame's clouded past, including a 1980 FDA Board of Inquiry, comprised of three independent scientists, which confirmed that it "might induce brain tumors." The FDA had actually banned aspartame based on this finding, only to have Searle Chairman Donald Rumsfeld (currently the Secretary of Defense) vow to "call in his markers," to get it approved. On January 21, 1981, the day after Ronald Reagan's inauguration, Searle re-applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame in food sweetener, and Reagan's new FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., appointed a 5-person Scientific Commission to review the board of inquiry's decision. It soon became clear that the panel would uphold the ban by a 3-2 decision, but Hull then installed a sixth member on the commission, and the vote became deadlocked. He then personally broke the tie in aspartame's favor. Hull later left the FDA under allegations of impropriety, served briefly as Provost at New York Medical College, and then took a position with Burston-Marsteller, the chief public relations firm for both Monsanto and GD Searle. Since that time he has never spoken publicly about aspartame.

Mike, the first GMOs reached the American diet around 1965. Cancer rates, age adjusted per 100,000 people, had risen steadily for decades until 1993, peak year, and since then they have fallen steadily. I won't try to pretend that GMO food caused the reversal but you will be very hard pressed to claim that GMO food causes the increase, which hasn't happened yet.

@@niklasvilhelm7247 Let's not waste time. Everybody knows that the anti-GMO groups are using "GMO" as an abbreviation for "food genetically modified using recombinant DNA technology". Organic food is not what you think it is, many call themselves organic and are still allowed to spray certain chemicals to the crops. Organic and gmo are not related, they are two different topics. Organic is a way of farming, GMOs is basically enhancing plants in a lab. You can have GMO crops and still grow them organically.

It can help people get enough vitamins. It plays a big part in combatting climate change. Of course we should be cautious about new inventions, but to just stupidly rant about how bad GMO is without actually knowing what you are talking about is just sad. Monsanto has destroyed the earth probably to the point of no return. There is recent news that glyphosate - which wheat fields are DRENCHED with just before harvesting, may be the big problem in peoples health over the past few decades, which til now had been blamed on gluten, as relates to the causation of hundreds of millions of people worldwide suffering from permanent intestinal problems and auto-immune diseases. You might win your battle to destroy the bodies of mankind with your chemicals, but Jesus Christ has already won the spiritual war that evil satanic Monsanto has taken its part in perpetrating against the bodies of people. We have eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty - died for the sins of the world, so that whosoever believes on Him shall NOT perish but instead shall have everlasting life. But you must accept His offer of eternal life through faith - He does NOT give it to anyone automatically. .

CBS This Morning: Why are you not ready to challenge his statements: if he's concerned about state-by-state GMO label laws, why didn't a reporter bring up the option of Senator Boxer's bill, S-511 which requires GMO labels on a federal level? When he mentions the study that concludes that GMO labels would cost $500 a year, why didn't a reporter ask him who funded that study (ahem) and the number of other studies that contradict those findings? This is typical of the kind of coverage by the mass media regarding Monsanto and the GMO issue: reporters who are uninformed and unable to properly challenge the biotech industry's claims

Monsanto binds its customers to a terms-of-service agreement when they buy their “technology.” (It includes stipulations such as the inability to save and replant the seed.) In the past, if the company has learned those terms have been violated, they have sued, or threatened to sue, farmers. Monsanto even has a hotline that people can call to alert them to patent infringements.
@DukeGMOLOL
@DukeGMOLOL 3 жыл бұрын
Every farmer since 1930 knows about seed patents and willingly sign the contract to use them and know that they cannot plant the resulting seeds. GM row crops were not planted until 1996 and every farmer already knew not to plant the resulting seeds. Some did and Monsanto filed 150 lawsuits over 24 years against the seed stealers. That's out of millions of customers in that time frame and they donated the proceeds to local charities.

GMO benefits according to Monsanto: Monsanto claimed that glyphosate would never accumulate in human bodies and nature. Now 70% of people pee glyphosate, it is in breastmilk and rain water. THAT was easy to know, hence a blatant lie. Monsanto claimed that there would NEVER be any resistent superweeds and bugs. There are plenty, entire landscapes are lost, that's why they are feverishly developing Dicamba. They say it makes way better yields. Well, Europe's are higher without GMOs. They say it enhances nutrition. Golden Rice does NOT (after 15 years!!!), as the FDA states in June 2018. They say it reduces poison use. It does not, it's rising like crazy. They say it feeds the world. SO WHY do 20% of US Americans go hungry? Ah, because they are poor. YOU GOT IT. Same problem in Africa and Asia, not the amount of food. ... Why still believe them? WHICH ARGUMENT IS STILL VALID? ... drought resistent plants. Thanks for saying that - not a single GMO variety yet! After 30 years. But plenty of non-GMO ones. Hahahahahahah. Ah, and finally, let's have a look outside the LAB and PR articles ... IN THE FIELD... the Argentinian soy cultivation region's reality: 4x higher birth defects and 3x higher cancer than the national averrage, since the introduction of GMO ag. WHAT could be the reason? Is Sofia Gattica who brought that up a shill, getting rich on protesting against epidemic birth defects? Is she a Chine agent? An elf? And meanwhile 1 in 3 Canadian kids suffers from a chronic disease. But people want to think it comes from God or watching Spongebob, not from the chelator glyphosate which sucks up minerals and nutrients and kills gut bacteria which RUN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. So well studied GMO lobbyists :) : was this too complex information for someone who studied GMOs for years? :-D

Your post is total garbage. THERE ARE NO SUPER WEEDS. Can you name one? Glyphosate is the safest herbicide farmers have ever used even safer than many of the pesticides organic growers use. Glyphosate does not suck up minerals in the soil in fact farmers set yield records almost every year. There are many companies even foreign companies producing and selling glyphosate. Monsanto's patent ran out in 1999. Monsanto was bought out over a year ago. There is NOTHING in your post that is correct Youthleadermagazine. risk-monger.blogactiv.eu/2016/03/18/10-reasons-why-glyphosate-is-good/

Dear David, since u r asking : a) Glyphosate resistent milkweed among others on 70 MILLION ACRES. b) According to figures by the United States Department of Agriculture, 70 million acres of American farmland were infested with glyphosate resistant weeds in 2013, double the area in 2009. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), a US-based nonprofit science advocacy organization, says glyphosate-resistant weeds have arisen largely due to the overuse of this herbicide in fields of crops genetically engineered to resist it. When farmers use Roundup exclusively, resistance develops more quickly. The widespread use of glyphosate also led to the neglect of other weed control measures, encouraging farmers to abandon a range of practices that had been part of their weed control strategy. www.globalagriculture.org/whats-new/news/en/32402.html c) Think : WHY do they wish to develop DICAMBA? which is extremely toxic? Because glyphosate no longer even works. This is so widely known and proven, that you obviously rely on industry posts only, which would mean that you were extremely uneducated (which is unlikely even for Americans given the amount of information on all sorts of media), or are a paid industry blogger Okay, you will say that the U.S. Dpt of Agriculture is run by Russians. And that we are, too. Hahaha.

There are no Super Weeds! Can you name a super weed? Please do not name a weed that glyphosate never controlled. There are NO super weeds and there are no weeds we can not control. Farmers have fought herbicide resistance for years and years. This not new to farmers but only to uneducated people on this subject. NO herbicide ever controlled all weeds. Glyphosate never controlled all weeds. Your post is ignorant and makes no sense and your links are garbage. Farmers could choose between many many many many many different herbicides to use on their gmo technology crops but NONE are as safe as glyphosate. Can you name one that is safer? Glyphosate is even safer than many of the pesticides organic growers use. Why would you want farmers to go back to using more and more harmful pesticides? When you see people in the cities control their dandelions you know they just used Dicamba a very old herbicide. Your posts tell me that your knowledge on this subject is ZERO.

The GMO issue is separate from the glyphosate issue. The point of genetically modifying a corn seed, for example, is so that it will be immune to the poison roundup. They are then spraying roundup directly on our food, we're eating it, and the congressmen are nice-nice with a happy face.
@davidadcock3382

NO Glyphosate is NOT sprayed directly on your food. Glyphosate is a very very safe herbicide used 3 to 4 months before the crop is harvested. Can you name the gmo technology crops that can NOT have Glyphosate used on them? There are many many many many herbicides that Farmers could choose to use on their gmo technology crops. Glyphosate is by far the safest of them all a a big reason it is very popular with them. There are mant companies even foreign companies producing and selling Glyphosate. Monsanto's patent ran out in 1999.

Similar marketing practices has taken place with dairy products according to National milk producers Federation. That doesn't mean the whole peel back the label campaign there is in consumers best interest. For instance they say no added hormones label on chicken from Tyson Foods. When it's illegal to sell poultry in the United States that was raised with added hormones. What they fail to state is that Tyson's Foods is owned by the Chinese. Which doesn't have the same health food and safety standards we do. There is no guarantee we are not getting GMO products from China. So I call bulshit on that.

Here is some interesting MONSANTO history: The Jewish Monsanto Family of Louisiana included Benjamin, Isaac, Manuel, Eleanora, Gracia and Jacob. They made frequent purchases of Blacks including twelve in 1785, thirteen and then thirty-one in 1787, and eighty in 1768. In 1794, Benjamin sold "Babet," a Black woman, to Franco Cardel. Manuel sold two Blacks from Guinea named "Polidor" and "Lucy" to James Saunders for $850 in silver. As individuals they were owners of Africans whom they named "Quetelle," "Valentin," "Baptiste," "Prince," "Princess," "Ceasar," "Dolly," "Jen," "Fanchonet," "Rozetta," "Mamy," "Sofia," and many others. Isaac repeatedly mortgaged four of these when in financial trouble. Benjamin Monsanto of Natchez, Mississippi entered into at least 6 contracts for the sale of his slaves which would take place after his death. Gracia bequeathed nine Africans to her relatives in her 1790 will, and Eleanora also held Blacks as slaves.
