Americans have until April 15 to file their taxes or file an extension. If you live in Maine or Massachusetts, you have until April 17. An expert offers some last-minute tips if you still have to file.

I already got my taxes filed and my refunds in the bank. The only people who should wait until April 15th are those who owe taxes. If you're due a refund, get them in early. That's YOUR money coming back to you.

I submitted mine in February and I ended up having to pay over $30 for Capital Gains tax.

I tried this morning, but failed. It's a LOT harder than you imply. There are all these second verification electronic requirements that I couldn't get through...at e-file, and Direct file, and turbo tax. I gave up crying. I even tried filing for an extension, but it was rejected because I didn't have some 6-digit irs pin id. And I couldn't seem to get that either. I know you don't mean to lie, but I'm 77 and don't have all the latest HW and SW, and I just wasn't able to follow all the instructions. I paid some e-file company $30, but I don't know for what. I'm just hoping to die before they catch up to me. I didn't even get to trying to file CA since you have to do fed first. I know I shouldn't have waited to the last day, but I've used turbo tax for years so successfully, and I didn't know they changed everything completely.
