"Orange Is the New Black" star Kate Mulgrew has played many strong characters in her time, but in writing her new memoir, "Born With Teeth," she opens up about some painful subjects, including her choice to give her firstborn child up for adoption. Anthony Mason sits down with Mulgrew to hear about the actress' search to find her daughter.

I don't have the nostalgia for Janeway that I have for Kirk and Picard, but only because I never watched Voyager as it aired. When I caught up with it years later, though, she immediately became verrrrrrrrrry close to being their equal in my eyes.

How cool is that to find out that Captain Janeway is your mother? I absolutely love Kate Mulgrew. She's one of those rare actresses who you can tell has an incredible amount of depth in her. When she plays a part, she becomes the experience of the character she's playing and isn't necessarily just acting the experience. Also, best Star Trek captain ever.

"There's something they never told you...I am your mother!" HA! Yeah, Star Wars joke, but I couldn't resist. Mulgrew is a great actor, and Janeway was my second favorite after Sisko of the five T.V. captains.

While I agree that Kate Mulgrew did her level best as an actress to make Janeway seem real and approachable... and she did a stunning job most of the time, the Voyager writers did their level best to sabotage this captain who ended up writing Janeway as one of the weakest captain characters to ever command a Star Trek bridge. Seska had a very valid point about Janeway's ability to command. The Janeway character made incredibly questionable and reckless decisions as captain all along the way, putting Voyager in harm's way more often than I dare count (from the very first episode). Heck, it was Janeway's fault they got stranded in the Delta quadrant. Kate certainly accomplished some of her best acting to downplay Janeway's irrational and reckless behavior and make it seem like Janeway was 'doing the right thing', but ultimately the stories tell of Janeway's weakness as a leader in the end. Janeway's weak command ability easily explains why she ended up commanding an Intrepid class starship (half the size of a Galaxy class, like Enterprise). This class starship is intended for scientific exploration, not battles. Voyager is easily the weakest of any of the Star Trek series produced with Janeway the weakest captain of any of the series. This is not the fault of Mulgrew, but of the Voyager writers and producers. Though, Discovery is certainly shaping up to try and beat Voyager out of the worst Star Trek series title.

But I think it shows how great her acting really is if fans of one of her shows think it's weird to hear her in her own accent. As a Trekkie who watched USS Voyager from the moment it departed DS9 and until the moment it blasted it's way out of a Borg sphere, when I watched OITNB her accent was immediately convincing to me. Similarly though I kept expecting Walter Koenig to talk with a Russian accent in Babylon 5 as Bester.

The book was wonderful, edgy, tragic, joyful, cathartic, successful, enlightening, poor, abundantly rich, redeeming, critical, regretful, praise giving, loving at the end. All feelings in in all parts of her life confessed to us. I'm sure there are things she still kept to herself, no one can blame her for that, no one needs to know everything about you even if you write a bio. I could not put the book down once I started reading, got nothing done that weekend. I stayed in my PJ's, drank tea, ate chocolates. It was a perfect weekend. I love Kate more now, just as strong and just as bold as Captain Janeway. No wonder she was the perfect fit for the part. More than anything the real feelings came through as a strong woman, this was real, painfully real and beautiful too.

What about the family that adopted the baby? Did you think about them? They prepared for a baby, was given a baby, a baby they had been planning for, hungering for, preparing for, for probably over nine months. She could have changed her mind at ANY time before birth. Now the child is placed in a loving home and THEN she changes her mind to disrupt the child and tear the heart up of a probably a great family. Speaking as a woman who cannot have children and who was constantly asked "well, why don't you adopt?" This is why. THANK GOD the Catholic Church refused to help in her endeavor. Too bad that doesn't happen today. If I was ever courageous enough to become an adoptive parent, I would move as soon as I recieved my child with no forwarding address to anyone. It is MUCH more brave to be an adoptive parent in today's society. Thought and consideration is given to the birth mother and no one else. Adoptive mothers are mothers too.

What an amazing interview. As one who has studied humanistic counselling and had to look deeply into myself I can tell you that writing your own story and being truthful with what you have done is very therapeutic. It can help your healing processes too. I wrote mine, three people have read it, me, my instructor on the course, and my wife. I feel my wife understands me better now. I am going to buy Kate Mulgrew's book. I would like to share her journey.

Such a touching story of a mother and daughter reunion. So happy Kate and her daughter found each other, and have managed to establish a good relationship. Not all parent and child reunions evolve into ongoing relationships, so they are very fortunate that it has worked out for them.

Wow. What a moving story. I am only in my 30s and I didn't really watch anything she was in prior to her appearance on Cheers, which I watched as a kid in the 80s. I first became truly familiar with her as an actress on Star Trek: Voyager, and it was absolutely captivating to see a powerful, authoritative, and yet still warm and loving person head that starship crew. She reminded me so much of my mother, in her strength and in her heart. Thanks to Kate for sharing this story. It's powerful and in it's own way inspiring. I plan on reading her book this summer. Thanks for your incredible body of work on Star Trek. I have since explored your other roles but I'm sure after I read your book, I'll see Janeway not just as a fictional character, but through the lens of your life.

Kate Mulgrew I so lucky! I am really pleased for some of us are able to achieve the impossible! I am also adopted, and I've never been able to find my birth mother! As I was adopted 6 months after my birth mother (Janet Mcful) after having me! I was adopted into a loving family the Austin's! Both of my adopted parent's have long passed away! I guess for some of us, some of us just don't have the luck to be found & wanted,! But such stories such as Kate Mulgrew's magical outcome gives us an understanding of how compassion and unconditional love does co-exists in our world! Great story, I am happy for the both of them.

I only became interested in Star Trek when VOYAGER came along. Captain Janeway, the 1st female captain, blew me away and I loved the show because of her. Kate is a fabulous actor. I was so glad she found her biological daughter and that their relationship worked out. I met my biological mother twice before she passed away. I consider my self so fortunate to have been able to tell her that I held no hard feelings towards her what so ever and that my adopted parents were wonderful. Also that I loved her and completely understood the reason why she gave me up. I didn't want her to not knock herself out over the past. I was so happy to have had that opportunity to help put her mind at ease concerning how I felt about her and help erase some of that guilt she had. Guess you could say I was lucky. ( Oh Kate, if you ever read this I lived in Clinton, Iowa from 1956 thru 1966 😉 )
