President Chiang Kai-shek, the founder of the Kuomintang (KMT), would likely be dismayed to see how the party has evolved to be perceived with closed ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The KMT, once a staunch opponent of the CCP, now collaborates and is being influenced by the CCP. This shift in perception would undoubtedly be a stark contrast to the anti-communist stance that President Chiang held during his leadership of the KMT. Sad day for democracy indeed

The KMT once ruled ROC like how the CCP is ruling PRC today: one party, authoritarian, corrupt. The only difference: ROC enjoyed total US support until Nixon visited PRC. The US forced Japan to cede Taiwan to the ROC after WW2 at Chiang's request. Without the gift, the KMT would have perished in 1949. Instead, Generalissimo Chiang brought his brutal reign upon the Taiwanese people and Sinonized the locals, banning the use of the local language, jailing/killing political dissidents, imposing martial law. After decades of struggle and Chiang's death, Chiang's heir allowed Lee Tenghui, a Taiwanese politician to succeed him, planting the seed that started Taiwan's transition to democracy. Today's KMT is losing support as transplant mainlanders age out and their children who are born and raised on the island lose their connection with the mainland. They are so desperate to regain power they'd invite the CCP to destroy Taiwan's young democracy. The people of Taiwan have taken to the streets to protect their hard earned freedom.

It all boils down to their constitution or charter or whatever is the overarching law of their country. In most democracies, it would be unconstitutional for each branch to encroach on the other therefore those moves will be illegal and non-binding even if it complies with the "Majority rule" of democracy.

Interestingly some of these same things are being used in democratic countries on a daily basis, and its still a real problem for the population in representation in government. Having processed in place are perhaps the only control the general public can rely on to protect their democratic rights

imho, it should've just become a bunch of seperate countries (e.g. tibet, inner mongolia, east turkestan, yunnan, hong kong) instead of a dictatorship that treats their non-han and non-white population like slaves and tools. (PRC) and a mostly indipendant country that has to pander to the americans once in a while. (ROC)

Democracy is not that important. What is important is who the people ruling you are. Democracy, dictatorship, monarchy, non of this is an issue so long as you have good people running it. A SYSTEM alone is never the answer.

1) Republic of China's constitution states it is part of China. 2) Taiwan interacts with Mainland via its internal affairs ministry, not foreign affairs Get on with independence referendum or go home. Get on replace link with Mainland from internal affairs ministry to foreign affairs or go home. Get on to rip up ROC constitution or go home.

As an American who knows very little about the history of Asia. I am a firm believer in the one china policy. The deposed nationalist chinese government that fled to the island of Formosa and today is called Taiwan. They are the only China that I recognize, as they are the only government presiding over an ethnic majority of Chinese people that they have a choice over. The other is a religous despotism akin to North Korea. Another point I would add, is that I do not support Americas involvement in the conflicts in Ukraine and Isreal. But I would die defending Democracy on Formosa.

In 1979, 2758 ruled that PRC mainland China is the only legitimate representative of China As of now 2758 still valid and the only one that counts! It has more than 1 80 countries J support superseding any other treaties documents & agreements! When 180+ countries speak, J it is final: Taiwan belongs to PRC mainland China. Abide by it! If you or KMT/DDP can't accept 2758, leave Taiwan & exile to other countries! You can even exile to the moon, nobody will miss you. It is PRC mainland China's Taiwan, not Taiwanese/KMT/DDP's Taiwan!
