During the late 80s early 90s British Railways was under going a massive replacement programme in the run up to privatisation Many locomotives and multiple units saw their final hours in scrap yards around the country Unlike the demise of steam the destruction this time was brutal Modern machines made short work of the job At MC metals we were told a loco a day was broken up and whilst there a 4 car EMU and class 45 were broken and cut Here is a look at what was going on that day

The old Red Road flats in the background would have been of a similar vintage to the locos being scrapped. Strange how both were condemned before their time - maybe with good reason?

I don't know what condition those flats were in, possibly they just got expensive to maintain or damp areas, and the council wanted rid of them. As for the trains the scrap man said a lot of what came in there could of lasted years more. That EMU seen had been refurbished with new double glazing new interior fittings and looked better than some stock BR were keeping. He said if the tax payers saw how much was being wasted there would be an outcry. It was as if the government just wanted to get new trains so things looked bright and new when sold off in privatisation.

Thanks for the info. I have not ventured back that way since making the film. I can imagine the ground was heavily polluted the way they ripped things apart there There were heaps of engines and gearboxes leaking oils and probably a dusting of asbestos about as many of the older trains were filled with it for insulation. Sometimes it was welded into the parts that it could not be removed from easily in later years. Great care would be needed to scrap those trains and contain all of it.

Yes sadly many good locos met their end there I am pleased I got to capture some on film before they were no more They broke a loco in a day
