I had my Bafang electric bike kit instaled in june 2016. Six months later, completed three days ago, i hit to my astonishment the 4.000 km mark. What an absolutely great journey it has been ! Finaly, after all this years trying hard to use the bike as my main ride, i finaly did it, with the the help of an electric motor. Anyway, four thounsand kms is a great reason for a new video of my commuting to work. Shot today. Here it is, enjoy.

Mine arrived today. 750w 42v. I got the usb cable for programming but am thinking if it is neseccary. There must be something to prevent it from going faster when right out of the box. Maybe the quick menu should work for not stalling at 40. I,m not sure if it will stall at a preset.

Yep ebikes have the car and oil industries really scared. So here in Europe there massive legal artificial inbuilt restrictions on ebike power and speed. Funny how on cars there are no such in built restrictions, the motor can just go faster than 50km / 60km / 120 km.

OK will a road bike version of this be faster yes but speed and comfort for me comes to mind if I am gonna be riding at 40mph I need comfort going over rough roads gonna need a suspension saddle aswel for added comfort and gell seat aswel 40mph sounds scary on a mtb tho my wheels on my bike need truing before I give it a test ride plan to upgrade the bearings on it aswel full ceramic wheel bearings less drag on the motor means more mileage

I see the future with more electric bikes and less cars honestly. Our energy problem is mainly one of efficiency because we´ve been running for a century now on a highly pollutant, non renewable energy. In my view, ebikes are part of the solution to our energy problem because they are as efficient as you can get, because they are widely available and because and they can easily replace a lot of our day to day short haul travel. A win win.

@@pedrogustavof yes I agree 100%. You will need to use the vehicle needed for the trip. If you are a single person going to work use a bike. If you are transporting multiple people like children then use a car. They key is to have fewer giant cars and trucks on the road so more bikes can move more people quickly. Having giant electric cars is not a very efficient solution

Obrigado. É aquela opção cujas vantagens superam largamente as desvantagens. Boas Festas.

Hi ! I had the kit installed by a store in Portugal, very competent people, by the way. To my knowledge, the kit was not modified nor did i asked for it. From what i found while i was on the information gathering phase, this is the normal performance of this Bafang mid-drive, which is very powerfull and doesn´t have any limitation imposed (unlike the Bosch or Yamaha counterparts).

Thanks for the information, very helpful to me. I have only a 300w hub motor, but has worked for 5000Km now, but it quite high on maintenance. I still want to upgrade to a mid drive, but I might wait until at least the battery or the motor dies. Since I am running 36V, I would have to purchase a complete new kit for a decent BBS02 or BBSHD. I wish you happy and safe commuting.

Going to install a Bafang kit myself but not sure if i should go for the bbs 750w or the bbshd 1000w. What battery are you using and what distances can you travel on 1 charge?
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 7 жыл бұрын
Initialy my project was to install the BBSHD. But then i figured that, to catter for my daily commute plus a few more km´s a also do regularly, i had to get a bigger, more powerfull battery, much more expensive and one that would´t fit inside the frame of the full suspension MTB as was going to install it on. So, the BBS02, powered by a 14Ah battery with Sanyo cells, was the compromise solution. And frankly, after almost 4.500 km, i don´t regret a bit the option. As for the autonomy, it depends a lot on the PAS level selected. If i´m in a hurry and have to squeeze everything out of the Bafang mid-drive, I would get around 30/35 km (as i obviously don´t drain the battery entirely, it´s a bit of a guess). But you can extract 50/60 km easily if you downgrade the PAS. I hope it helped.

Don Mega What about the Bafang Ultima Max? It suppose to 3 sensors to make shifting and riding easier like Bosch. I saw a video from Luna about it. But I can not find this kit. You need to use an ebike frame with a special mounting bracket that the motor fits into.

how many km can you do on one charge? Regards
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 5 жыл бұрын
I have a lot of people asking me the same question. The answer is: it depends a lot on your demand on the battery. If i´m using PAS 1 to 3, i can get 50/60 km. If i´m riding on PAS 5 (wich is the max on my bike) all the time, probably i´ll get 25 km. In the end of the day it´s just like a combustion engine: if you´re a F1 driver, you can´t expect to have the same mileage. If you´re into riding hard all the time and need range, i´ll go for a bigger battery. Mine is 14Ah 48v.

The way I'm trying to think about it is even if and when maintenance is required it's probably way cheaper and easier than just getting a simple car service. You could learn to do it yourself from youtube with parts you had delivered from ebay and some simple tools. You also know you're not getting ripped off and the work you do will be done properly. Just having the ability to do all your own repairs and maintenance is comforting to know compared to when something goes wrong with your car or motorbike you're like ZOMG I'm screwed.

Do you maybe know how many T the middle sprocket is (where you ride most of the time, more or less)? Yeah... You should look into getting a In gear hub. That way you have 1 sprocket and your chain and rear sprocket wears less because there is no moving chain the whole time.

Hi ! I use a 14Ah litthium battery, Sanyo cells. Actually, my BBS02 had the first issue last week, after almost 5300 km of flawless work. The motor would cut all of a sudden, with no (!) indication in the display. Tried to troubleshoot with new cables, but to no avail. My guess it´s the controller. The bike is now undergoing maintenance, next week i´ll have the veredict. Being a heavy user, no doubt the BBSHD, for the increased overal roughness, would have been a wiser choice. The question was i would have needed at least a 17Ah battery, which would have to be custom made to fit my frame, skyrocketing the overal price tag of the kit.

@peaps
@peaps 7 жыл бұрын
I disassembled the BBS02, and re-built it with lithium grease on the Nylon cog, and heavy grease on the main pinion, but it still makes a lot of noise. I think the problem was caused by running it for a long time with no lubrication. All of the original grease had literally turned solid to black chunks of dirt and there was no lubrication. In future, I will take the cover off the pinion/spur gear and clean/re-apply new grease every 500-1000 KM or so, because I'm sure this could happen again. That said, the BBSHD is a great motor, you just have to learn how to use the throttle wisely otherwise, your chain will jump off all the time, or you will simply snap it.

Hello, I've read online many comments about these engines needing maintenance every 2000 Km or so and of cog related problems. Do you felt any or these or services your engine in any way after all those km? Most of these comments were from fat bike users that rode them pretty hard. So I would like an opinion from someone that actually commutes on a bike. Thanks

Hi, your battery runs how many km? it appears to be self-regenerating,
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 4 жыл бұрын
It depends a lot on the assistance level i select. Normally i run on 3/4, which gives me around 25/30 km. If i run on 5 (max) i get a bit less. As for the self-regeneration, i guess it´s some kind of temporary mismatch between the actual battery level and the measured level (if i run hard for a lot of kms, the battery level will seem low, but after a few minutes the true higher level it will eventualy be displayed)

Hi, what average autonomy do you have with the 750W motor and the 14Ah battery please?
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Well, it depends a lot on the PAS i select (from 1 to 5). On max power (5) i can squeeze 25/30 kms, depending on the number of hills i get on the way.

What battery are you running that's getting you the 25 to 30 kilometers per charge? The reviews I've been reading are telling tales of 40 miles at 21mph, with zero pedal input, but that's with the 52V / 11.6 amp hour battery.

brutal!

Boas festas

With your speed once you stop pedaling does the bike slow down or do you have to change the motor or gear speed?
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 5 жыл бұрын
The bike slows down, the speed at wich it settles depends on the terrain. To keep the pace you have to keep the engine running by pedaling.

This bike was really easy to assemble kzfaq.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

Pedro, tudo bem? Abs
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 6 жыл бұрын

Great video! I have questions. 1) I have COPD so would this motor work for me? I can pedal, but not very much. I have strength but no "wind". 2) I have a Trek 520 road bike. Will this motor do well with this platform? 3) Can I expect 40 miles (65km) on a charge? I really miss riding and hopefully this would work for me. If not, someone can buy my 520! Looks like it may work!
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. I guess it will fit just fine on the Trek 520. As for the range, you´ll need a bigger battery to have that kind of range. As an example, mine is a 14Ah 48v and if i run at max power i can squeeze around 25/30 km with still around 20 % of charge left (i never let the battery run flat). My suggestion is that you try to find some expert on the e-bike kits. It´s precisely what i did and i´m very thankful i did it because not only it really helped in the "design" of the system that best suited but also it was great help when i had minor issues.

Droid 3.0 yes i doo, every single day. The only difference is that I now have the BBSHD with the same batteries. In terms of maintenance, I had the BBSO2 serviced with 15000+ km before I sold it and I spent around 200 euros on parts to put it in a new condition. The sparing part is the easier because is obvious. I now have some 17000 km made on the ebike, in three years. I never did the maths, but surely I would have payed some 5.000 euros a year with a car to do the same (apart from the cost of buying the car)

@pedrogustavof

Hi ! The first thing i realised when i installed my mid-drive was the extra wear the bike components would be under. In fact, i bought this bike in particular five or six years before and i used it for this long without noticeable wear. The moment i added the 750w of brute force on it, the wear the chain/cassete combination alredy had surfaced all of a sudden. So yes, unless manufacturers start to design components specificaly to e-bikes, you will have to replace them more often.
@pedrogustavof
@pedrogustavof 7 жыл бұрын
The thing i strongly recomend is to invest in good disk brakes. When you're commuting with a machine capable of top speeds above 70 km/h, believe me, you will thank the investiment many times. I replaced the original brakes of my bike (Avid Juicy 3, alredy in bad shape) for a complete set of Shimano SLX. Apart from that, i replaced the original MTB tyres (Continental Race King 2.2) for a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Plus, which, apart from having a very low rolling resistance, are almost puncture proof, which gives me a lot of peace of mind commuting.
