In special broadcast, we spend the hour remembering Toni Morrison, one of the nation’s most influential writers, who died in August at the age of 88 from complications of pneumonia. In 1993, Toni Morrison became the first African-American woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. She also won a Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for her classic work Beloved. Toni Morrison was born in Lorain, Ohio, in 1931. She did not publish her first novel, “The Bluest Eye”, until she was 39 years old. She wrote it while taking care of her two young sons as a single mother and juggling a day job as a book editor at Random House. As an editor, she is widely credited with helping widen the literary stage for African Americans and feminists. Much of Morrison’s writing focused on the female black experience in America. Her work was deeply concerned with race and history, especially the sin of transatlantic slavery and the potentially restorative power of community. In 2012, President Obama awarded Morrison the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Upon her death, he said, “Toni Morrison was a national treasure. Her writing was not just beautiful but meaningful - a challenge to our conscience and a call to greater empathy.” Today we remember Toni Morrison through those who knew and loved her - editors, writers, musicians - with highlights from a celebration of her life on November 21 at Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. We hear from Oprah Winfrey, Edwidge Dandicat, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Kevin Young, and David Remnick.

DemocracyNow! shows Oprah for the second time. I guess DN! has joined the billionaire bandwagon. Listen to Oprah closely. She encourages the exploitation and destruction of the earth, she encourages the rich to be waited on by the poor, and she praises royalty. Her speech in support of Morrison is a disgusting betrayal of Morrison's words. It kind of reminds me how Brian Williams used Leonard Cohen's work to praise war.

Because DemocracyNow! loves billionaires I guess. This is the second time they showed this video!. Oprah's worth is about $2.6 billion while her people get shot in the back and live on the street.

Democracy Now was merely broadcasting a public function just like a myriad other media organizations. They have the right to do so and they have no control over who the event producers place on their dais. Besides the fact that regardless of what 'White' progressive or liberal or Demos or Repos might think of Ms. Winfrey, she represents something you will *never* get. I am no fan of hers either, yet I understand that there are many in my community, especially the elders, who look at and to her for the inspiration her position represents. I appreciate their need to look beyond certain aspects because Oprah is something more rare than the perfect Blood Diamond. She is one of the first, and still at this point in history the *only* , 'Black' women to 'make it' beyond the mainstream and into her own. I will not begrudge them that and you have no jurisdiction to do so either. The arrogance in which you and @Grant Marcus commented without even thinking first, and taking other layers into consideration that has nothing to do with you, makes you no better than those elites you are judging.

@@grantmarcus5675 Please do not think you know a dam thing about the violence perpetrated against the indigenous people of this country. You would not even bring that up as some kind of thermometer to compare Ms. Winfrey's dedication, or lack thereof, if you did. This is *nothing* new in our communities, it is *historical* and has been ongoing since *before* Jim Crow more than 150 years ago. It started the moment Europeans set foot here. It is way beyond anything Ms. Winfrey or any other person of color can be in control of. And as I said to @Aristeidis Lykas, Ms. Winfrey represents something to the elders of my community that you will *never* understand. I agree with everything people have said about Ms. Winfrey yet @Bibi Chahine is correct: this is *not* about her. Yours and others' selfish need to encroach upon Ms. Morrison's legacy to arrogantly disparage someone that means more than you could possibly know, to a certain significantly powerless sector of the 'Black' community, is inconsiderate. Looking to Ms. Winfrey's success is how they get through their oppressive daily struggles. Speaking without understanding or thought beyond some agenda renders you just as arrogant as those elites you judge so harshly.

In this life we all as human beings are transient. Some of us have it easier that others through race, social location, privilege and such. No matter what there is good and bad , right and wrong. But there is no life and existence without these two ideals. I read the opinions of who should and should be, but keep in mind and be aware that of this- “All things work to together for a grater purpose”

Read the room. Oprah did a tribute to a legendary writer, Toni Morrison. Oprah’s own legacy is not the subject. I also find it curious that you seem to think a black woman paying tribute to another black woman should be disallowed because she’s somehow responsible for some white man’s actions.

🗿 It's one thing to CRITICIZE, but something TOTALLY DIFFERENT to OVERLY JUDGE or disparage someone for having the audacity to live their life on their own terms. It appears that successful Black Folks in America are almost ALWAYS held to a higher standard than their White counterparts. White (AND) Black Americans are guilty of this TWISTED 'LOGIC.' You & I will always be FAR from perfect or IDEAL. I'm assuming that (names, details, further explaining) shouldn't be necessary. After reading many of the comments, I feel duty-bound to remind people: NO ONE OWES YOU A GODDAMN THING. So please, feel free to GET A LIFE of your own❗ 📚.
