In Episode One of the Build the Life You Want Super Soul Podcast, Oprah and Arthur Brooks offer listeners a better understanding of the science behind happiness and why Arthur says, “Happiness is not a destination, happiness is a direction.” Together, they take questions from people across the country who have read Build the Life You Want who are curious how to apply topics from the book to their own lives. They discuss the “The Four Pillars of Happiness: Faith, Family, Friends and Work that Serves” as well as the power of metacognition which Oprah calls “one of the biggest contributions to people getting happier.” Arthur Brooks explains how using “emotional caffeine” can lead to greater happiness and how having “a better storage of emotions” can block anxiety and depression.

Mother Earth wants her children to be happy, she loves us for what we are. She gives us air and water, food and fire. Without her love and nurture we could not live. If you look at the rest of her children, the animals, the birds , the fish the trees and floers, we'll see the beauty and fulfilment that can be lived here on Earth.

Thank you. It is not Mother Nature, the feminine way, driving the 4 “negative” pillars he mentions (Oprah seemed to pick up on this). It’s the patriarchy and negative masculine (I don’t mean men here!) that drive power, etc. Mother Nature is all about community, family, meaning. She does not want us to be hungry! Human nature is what drives choices and where hedonism comes from. Mother Nature is the entire world. It’s our societies and cultures that drive how we behave, not Mother Nature.

Human race made cars and luxury pleasures and ect. a relevant “lifeline” I believe that Mother Earth is being damaged because of these things, I wholeheartedly disbelieve she pushes selfish living on us as humans choose to live by over being more down to earth and more at easy by being natural, and if we notice natural is almost the same as the word nature!

Mother Nature is the ultimate truth of life. Blossoming when the time is right, letting go peacefully when the time is right. She encourages a peaceful pace, relaxation, love, appreciation, compassion. She is an artist (just look at the leaves right now!) and the ultimate mentor we should be looking to. Using this negative language toward Mother Nature is patriarchal and unhealthy. ❤

I agree. My version of "mother Earth" and the natural world does NOT include the systems and hierarchies that humans have created. Like money, that isn't Mother Nature to me. To AB, he seems to include those things in his definition of the natural world; his definition is much more broad, basically he could have said the environment and context people live in. Oprah tried to give him an out, and he dug his heels in, possibly not quite getting the different ways of defining the term he used. His mind is coming from a very specific academic place. When he refers to "the divine path," I believe that path is based in the natural world, or else it wouldn't be such a universal human phenomenon. I think on language used, it definitely isn't the best term, is definitely misleading. "Mother nature" is a vital part of depression prevention.

@@Goldgirl1978 I agree. At first it was difficult to adjust to, because I was always in the company of others, and I am sociable. However, now I’m used to it. Also, it’s not by choice. I have to stop being too picky when I meet a man, or else I’ll be single for the rest of my life, yet I’m not miserable being alone. I work, and when I get home sometimes it’s party on, when I play my music on CDs. Also, I have select shows that I watch on OWN on Friday and Saturday nights, and I fall to sleep to the content on KZfaq, so most of the time being alone is peaceful. ✌🏽

Hello, I am Leonie from Cameroon. I love the science that each individual is an enterprise. And the practice of having the children write a business plan just put a smile on my face. My mum used to ask us to write down what we plan to do or become in the future and I used to think "is that really necessary?" Growing older and having responsibilities of my own, I am also doing that, though just in discussion. Listening to the business plan agenda from Arthur, it is something I will definitely program for my kids. Thank you Oprah and Arthur. I've learnt soo much from this podcast.

Im half way into the conversation and thoroughly enjoying it but i must say, the 4 pillars of happiness are sounding vary extrinsic to me. The family you are giving might not always make you happy and building a family isn't always easy because you can't necessarily control people. Choosing the right friends does add to your happiness for sure but again, even the best of friends will disappoint you at times and poof, there goes that pillar of happiness. I guess faith and work with purpose are the two pillars that are more under your control so I'll work on that and the family and friends will stem from that

Great ideal; unfortunately the reality is if you r an introvert like myself and would usually like to enjoy partying by myself it saves the scrutiny of being around other people and enjoying myself. Other people drain me in a short time. The world has changed. When he spoke of the commercials that’s just simple marketing. Being an introvert doesn’t s mean u r lonely, lacking or striving to have friendships it’s just that we need a time to be with people and a time to go to our corner and regroup. I wish people who were extroverts didn’t look at us as lost souls.

Thanks Oprah. Great content as always. About the girl with regret: she failed the exam, where’s the regret in that? The regret would be if she had the opportunity to get in the university and she didn’t. But she didn’t even pass the exam. So I’m thinking that was more about feeling sorry and self pity than regret. Dying for our faith? Unfortunately people who are willing to die for their faith are usually ready to kill for it too. And that’s what keeps the wars going. Dying trying to reach your goals that’s aligned with humanity is another story.

Peace, contentment, happiness - they’re pretty close I think. I think belief and commitment to something transcendent (what Arthur and Oprah are calling faith), satisfaction (at achieving what we strive for) and meaning are certainly important ingredients but I don’t think they are the only ones. For me, connection and time in nature and with other living beings, play or adventure and creativity (not just producing something creative but the process as well) are important as well. I also think what Arthur blames “nature” for is probably more accurately attributable to cultural influences. Fame, fortune yada yada - I query whether his need to blame Mother Nature might possibly have something to do with the fact that as a lecturer at business schools he won’t question the role of capitalist society and many religious bodies of the West in promoting fame, fortune yada yada as values to be strived for at all cost - most significantly at great cost to our natural environment.

Thank you for another great conversation. Re including others to elevate our joy; what if others around us does not enjoy same things ? I totally agree with you but I have struggled all mylife to get my closest friends being part of my joy … like going to spa, traveling; hiking , concerts etc… the normal things … so I learnt to do them by myself, tho I know the joy isn’t complete! Tks

I think that what he terms, "mother nature," is actually the world and society, both of which are under the control of the enemy. The distinctions are critical to one’s understanding of the 4 pillars that stand in contrast to the 4 idols.

Thanks to both of you for this 1st episode on the book. Looking forward to the next one. Positive impact of earthing (walk bearfoot) is indeed well documented. A good documentary to watch on this "the earthing movie" and the "grounded documentary film" where we see so many people healing thanks to gounding.

I listened to Arthur Book about happiness, I went depress for 2 weeks. Maybe what he said is true that you can't be happy and have to go through the pain/unhappiness to recognize happiness. This is nothing new, but in the end, he emphasis that there is no other ways. It's about acceptance and is part of life.
