I love hearing your stories. My Grandma had 16 children but Grandad worked in the mines, kept a huge allotment, pigs, chickens and did a bit of poaching to feed the family. He was a real hardworking family man and they knew hard times. (UK)

My husband is a third generation share holder in a hunting and fishing club in VA. We call it ‘camp’ as well. Such a wonderful place and real part of our family history. The club is 104 years old! Here in Oklahoma we're expecting a hard freeze tonight- 10-29. It has been raining, cold rain and I'm hoping it doesn't freeze and be slick, lose electricity, etc.. I went hunting with my daddy from the time I was about 7, until he died at 74 years old, 28 years ago today. This video brought back a lot of dear memories of those times in the woods together. He taught me about the animals, how they acted, etc. He taught me how to be quiet in the woods and read signs so we could find the animals. Thanks for sharing your stories, memories you'll hold dear all of your life. Enjoyed the visit, stay safe and GOD bless

Tipper, so gracious of you to give a nod to a KZfaqr you enjoy. Here's one Matt might enjoy: Brownville's Food Pantry for Deer. They support the wild deer population in their area of Maine by supplying acorns, oats and apples in feeders during the winter. The deer yard on their property and the McMahon family have cameras on the feed troughs which go live on Dec. 16th this year. It's so lovely and peaceful to watch those beautiful deer come in to feed during the winter months. I was thinking y'all might enjoy the tranquil beauty of their videos.

We live on opposite ends of the Appalachian chain, Tipper. I remember feeling envious of the jump start you get on your garden in the Spring. We plant more than a month after you do. But come Fall, we are ahead of you. Our leaves are gone. Though it didn't accumulate, we had snow flurries all day today. The high temperature was in the mid-30s. In the last week, I mulched a few pick-up loads of leaves and spread them in the garden. Then I covered them with a few inches of composted cow manure and tilled it in. Amending our soil in the Fall is a strategy we use to plant as early as possible the following year. I suppose that's our way of adapting to a compressed growing season. Have a wonderful week!

No trails, but when I drive by where my grandmother had a farm, I always slow down and look for her....We used to bring fruit and vegetables up to the road stand and sell. I loved her, I loved the farm. It was my happy place. It was purchased by a sportsmans club and is now all overgrown. I still drive slowly by and look. Just in case. Sometimes I think that if I see her, it will be my time to go...and follow her into the afterlife.

We dipped below freezing here in SE Iowa last night. Woke up to zinnia zombies :). Poor things' leaves were all droopy and the blooms were faded. I need to get out there today and pull them up. What you said, Tipper, about the hickory leaves against the blue sky reminded me of one morning back when I still lived in Ohio. I pulled into the parking lot at work and was facing west where there was a huge bank of dark grey clouds behind some kind of yellow-leafed tree. With the sun behind me shining on them, they were just about glowing so yellow against the grey clouds that I actually gasped and stopped the car and just stared for a couple minutes. it was truly a magical sight to behold!

Your mentioning the days when people walked made me recall my childhood days when my mother , sister and I would walk to town . Sometimes it was just to go "window shopping " for nothing in particular . The sidewalks would be full of people because those were the days before shopping centers and all the stores were '" downtown ". My favorites were the two "ten cent stores " and two hardware stores . There was also Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Ward. This was in the early to mid 50's and down town started to fade away as shopping centers became more common . Walking to town faded with it except in my memory .

I live in northwest Georgia and I think here where I live is the Deer Capital. This past summer I saw more deer than I have seen in my whole 60 years of life, and I have seen a lot over the years. 🍂 Fall is my favorite Season, and I'm not looking forward to such a drastic change in temperatures. As you get older I believe you will continue to look back more now than in the earlier years remembering great stories... I laughed so hard when Matt's Daddy was asked how did the skunk 🦨 get the cans open. So glad to hear Rachel is doing well and continues to keep fit. Folks like Rachel, the Flowers family and others are far and few around here now. I've never heard folklore about catching a leaf, but I'm definitely going to tell my grandchildren. I miss seeing Granny on the videos but she needs her rest to get well. The LORD hears our prayers. I'm looking forward to your next video. Have a wonderful week and stay warm. Blessed! 🤗🙏💕

I always enjoy dropping by to see what you and Matt are doing around y’all’s homestead. My mom always had us plow the garden several times during the cold weather. Like Matt said as long as the grounds not frozen it can be tilled. It really does seem to kill out any bug larvas that’s hiding. When my husband plowed up mine garden several times during cold weather my garden had the best produce to harvest. The years he only tilled it once it just seemed I was fighting all kinds of bugs, voles and moles. So I’m a firm believer in tilling up as much as you can during cold weather.

Great video! I watch a lot of British archeology. When they have a great deal of manual labor to do, especially where walking is concerned, they use the pharse, "It's Shank's Pony all the way." Seems like a phrase our ancestors brought with them to Appalachia.

Good morning, Tipper, hope y’all are doing well, cold weather’s coming, I think it’s time to gather up the last of the gardens goodness and pull out your long johns and stoke up the wood stove, cause according to the weather man it’s going to be 26 degrees in your neck of the woods tomorrow morning. Here were I am about 32. Those marigolds are really pretty, they really brighten up your day, you could bring some of your last flowers inside to enjoy, that’s what I would do. 🌼🌸 I’ve bought pretty leaves inside, but they dry up pretty fast. 🍂 Y’all take care , stay warm. Tell Granny I think of her everyday and pray she’s feeling better. ❤️🙏 May God’s Goodness continue to Bless you . 🙏❤️🙏

Hey Matt & Tipper, I wanted to say it looks like you got a pair of good shoes finally- I‘be been forgetting to ask that. They look comfortable. You two are such hard workers! I really enjoy you two working together .Thanks for taking time out of your busy life to share with us. The Nasturtiums are beautiful! My favorites too - they are so versatile. Much ❤ & prayers especially for Granny. Think of her all the time. ❤ from Colorado.

Nice you've amended your garden beds to such a lovely state. We have clay here in the Willamette Valley, not red. I loved the Little House on the Prairie books as a young girl. Read them all several times. I even bought a complete set for myself as an adult. The very first book starts off with pa shot a deer.

We got a lot of cleanup to do in the garden too. We been doing a little at a time. We are dreading the cold. It's suppose to start Tuesday in the 40s and 20s at night. It's that time of year, but boy I dread it. Love to hear yalls stories. Oh I bet that country ham biscuit is good. So glad Miss Rachel is doing good. Yall have a blessed night.
