It baffles me to hear ourselves shaking our heads when white institutions don't induct our singers, WHY would it bother you? Rock n Roll is the step child of the Delta Blues, Elvis grew up sneaking into black churches, listening to Big Mama Thornton. We didn't need them they needed us. And what they acquired they retained and never stopped producing it. Black folks abandoned the bands and opted out for the MTV platforms back in the late 80's. Run DMC, Rick James, Michael Jackson protesting the all of black entertainers on white platforms as if whites are the final definers of black talent. When with kids were the highest consumer groups of Hip Hop music mid 90s to early 2006 at its height we failed to consolidate ourselves as entrepreneurs, essentially selling ourselves out as servants for hire instead of proud owners of our own culture. Be proud black people for your God given talents. Embrace it and nourish it as a gift not a commodity.

This reminds me so much of my daddy too. Life is confusing right now, and I cling to the memories of simpler times! Sometimes when he would pick me up after school and it would be just the two of us, he would get the records out and play his songs! Slingers, Harold Melvin and the blue notes, blue magic, stylistics, Michael Henderson, bloodstone, and so many more. I can see him sitting there, buffing his albums with a towel, setting the needle, and telling me all about the artists, where they’re from, what year the songs came out, where he was, what they used to wear. Best daddy ❤️❤️❤️

I went to school with his son Alverez. Alverez was so handsome and a really chill young man. It was so sad what happened to him and then a year later his brother tragically lost his life. Alverez never made mention of his father being in a legendary R&B/Soul group. I found out from my cousin who was good friends with Alverez. When I asked Alverez if it was true, he was really cool and humble about it and said yes, that was my father. I loved the Spinners (still do) so I thought it was cool....RIP to Philippe and his sons ❤🙏

Great job telling the story of Phillippe's life. He is, without any doubt, the greatest R&B lead of his era. I was overwhelmed with his voice, style and energy. I was fortunate enough to see him perform with the Spinners in concert three times, and very lucky to see him perform live after he went solo at a nightclub in Cincinnati. I was devastated when he passed. I've said many times, there was no one like him before, and there's been no one like him since.

Daryl Hall (one of the greatest underrated singers imo, not just in the blue eyed soul genre but period) of Hall & Oates has said he was doing his best impression of Phillipe on the song Sara Smile and that much of his singing style was inspired of him and other singers, especially those from the Philly soul genre. In 2004 the group actually ended up covering I'll Be Around to pay tribute and got a AC hit out of it, def recommend looking up live performances of that cover bc they did the song justice

I went back and forth with GC about the 8 at his funeral story about 16 years ago on the internet about this. I couldn't believe it. Yes he may have been a bit arrogant but he was also a great singer with a larger than life personality. There was a small wake that his family hosted where that number was low. However, he had another big funeral somewhere else where many attended including the Spinners.

One part of the story that should be mentioned is the fact that Phillipe Wynne did a reunion tour with the Spinners within a year of his death. I will always feel blessed to have seen their concert performance in Philadelphia. That was the first time that I saw them live even though I grew up on their music. Man, that was a show. It should also be pointed out how Phillipe was a master of ad libbing. His ad libs brought a number of Spinner classics to a higher level.

Hey my Brothers ... world's biggest Spinners and Phiippe "Soul" Wynn fan here. This video made my night! It is super accurate ... I've interacted with Martin (Motown) at Bert's about this ... this video nails it. My favorite all-time is One of Kind Love Afair ... I have sang and danced with choreographers outside of Bert's (in Detroit), I have attended four of their concerts during the Phillipe era and three during the John Edwards era .... and it goes on and on. This video brought back so many memories. I am commenting (obviously), subscribing, ringing the bell, upvoting, liking .... I remember Phillipe always finished their riffs with Rubberband Man (don't forget he went to the Psychodelics) ... anyways, more to the story but this video really hits all the keys. I think Henry is the only one still alive .... didn't know Alan Thicke was the Spinners' manager. Knew all about Thom Bell but remember, Bell was doing some big Elton John stuff at the time like Philadelphia Freedom. Phillipe should have never left The Spinners. Broke my heart when be died. Yep, it was definitely on Friday the 13th. People try to claim he was on cocaine. I'll never forget it. He used to sweat A LOT ... even when he was with The Spinners. He would have to wipe his face and forehead a lot back in those days but he was so active while doing his songs, bouncing up and down, especially when doing Rubberband Man. I can sing ever word to every one of Phillipe's Top 25 hits. Greatest band ever, The Spinners, and they should absolutely be admitted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame!

The first cut on the Spinners debut album was "How Could I Let You Get Away" the first single dropped in 1972. The story goes that DJs at Black radio stations flipped the record over and started playing the uptempo "I'll Be Around." On their early records from Motown in the 60s, in 1961 their first hit was called "That's What Girls Are Made For," then in 1965, "I'll Always Love You" and in 1966, "Truly Yours." Bobbie Smith sang the lead vocals on those early records, but they also had other early members that didn't stay long with the group, C.P. Spencer and George Dixon. They didnt have another hit until 1970's "It's A Shame", written and instrumentation by Stevie Wonder. There was a follow up record, "We'll Have It Made", but it didnt have the impact that 'It's A Shame' had, and in 1972, they signed with Atlantic Records. Producer extraordinaire Thom Bell took The Spinners under his wing and the hits started pouring out back to back. It was truly a 'one of a kind' experience.
