Kent McCord Interview: Best Known as Jim Reed in Adam-12! Kent Franklin McWhirter was born on September 26, 1942, Kent McCord shares some great stories! This interview is from Nostalgia Con 2016!
He shares how he got into acting. He played college football and was studying to be a Physical Education Instructor. He happened to be a neighborhood kid playing football with the likes of Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley! Becoming good friends with Ricky Nelson, Ozzie liked using local kids for his TV show: Ozzie and Harriett and so during that football game Ozzie discovered Kent McCord! His acting career started as playing one of Ricky Nelson's friends on the Ozzie and Harriet Show! Between 1961 and 1965, besides appearing on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952), he worked as an extra, bit player and stuntman.
In 1965 Kent McCord signed a contract with Universal Pictures, and three years later he got his big break when Jack Webb picked him to co-star in Adam-12 (1968). He played Jim Reed opposite Martin Milner in the TV show Adam-12!
He has actually played the same character (Officer Jim Reed) in four different series: Dragnet 1967 (1967), Adam-12 (1968), The D.A. (1971) and Emergency! (1972).
During the Adam-12 series' run he became actively involved in the Screen Actors Guild. Elected to the Screen Actors Guild's National Board of Directors in 1972 and served on the Board for 11 years. He was twice elected First Vice President. He was elected Treasurer of the Screen Actors Guild [November 2001]. He also chaired the Children's Committee, the Guild's Publications Committee, the Agents Relations Committee and represented the American acting community to The Federation Internationale des Acteurs (FIA).
He missed out on the original Battle Star Galactica. But later had a second chance in Battle Star Galactica 1980! Kent McCord was also in He has recently appeared in recurring roles in the NBC series Seaquest DSV, and the USA Networks Renegade, Silk Stalkings, and Pacific Blue, as well as the SCI-FI Channels Farscape and the hit CBS series Jag.
Among his many other television, film, and theatrical credits are Marcus Welby, Ironside, The Outsider, Ba Ba Blacksheep, The Love Boat, Monsters, MacGyver, Private Eye, The Highwayman, J.J. Starbuck, 21 Jump Street, Murder, She Wrote, DarkSkies, Lawless, Diagnosis Murder, Joey and Dad, Merv Griffin, Laugh-In, Hollywood Squares, The Tonight Show, and others. Movies for television include Dragnet 66, The Outsider, Shadow Over Elveron, Jigsaw, Breakout, Beg, Borrow or Steal, Telethon, Pine Canyon is Burning (a pilot for NBC), For Heaven’s Sake, Nashville Beat (a pilot for The Nashville Network, which Kent Executive Produced and Co-Created), DarkJustice, a CBS M.O.W., and Accidental Meeting for USA Cable.
His movies include The Young Warriors, Did you Hear about the One the Traveling Saleslady, Conquest of Earth, Airplane II-The Sequel, Predator II, Illicit Behavior, and Return of the Living Dead III-Ashes. His last legitimate theater appearance was on the famous Kenley Circuit In Tunnel of Love with Martin Milner. He has just completed roles in the movies Run Ronnie Run, Megiddo-The Omega Code 2, and stars with Erin Grey in Woman’s Story.
He is still acting today and keeps busy by acting, doing voiceovers for commercials and documentaries, and working on his website.
