Adam-12 was the reason I became a police officer. It was my favorite show to watch as a child. I never missed an episode if I could.

Jack Webb employed actors who needed the work, gave them meaningful parts and treated them with respect. Leo Gordon needs more recognition for his writing.

My favorite show at that time. When Martin Milner passed away the LAPD sent out an End of Watch Call. The EOW Call was recorded by Shaaron Claridge (the real LAPD dispatcher used on the show as mentioned in this video). Very nice tribute by LAPD.

I was a police officer in the 80’s in a town in NC. The patrol division had 5 teams, Adam, Baker, Charlie, David and Edward. I was on Adam team zone 1 second car in the zone, so yes, I was Adam 12!!

Adam-12 was a terrific show, very down-to-earth and authentic. In the same vein, I also enjoyed Police Story in the 70s. Nobody makes shows like those anymore.

Adam-12 was probably the most realistic show about the day-to-day life of two cops on the beat as any cop show in history!

My grandfather was a cop from the late 1930s until the mid 1970s. He said "Adam-12", "Kojak" and (of all things.) "Barney Miller" were the only "cop shows" that were even close to realistic. 😊

You better believe we want to see more Adam 12 videos. This was one of the best police shows in the 1960's/70's. So keep them coming and please do Dragnet too.

Adam 12 and the old Hawaii 5-0 are my 2 favorite of that era. Both were really realistic and mostly believable.

My mom worked as an accountant at the Union Station for Fred Harvey (restaurant). The major restaurant had recently been shutdown but her office was above/behind the restaurant and she had a side door to exit and walk to the other Fred Harvey units there. One day Adam-12 was shooting a scene where Malloy was chasing a suspect past the restaurant and my mom just walked out of the door as Malloy and suspect ran by her during the shoot. Great memories. Used to see them towing the car often around my neighborhood. Love all of the episodes, but have emotional issues watching “Elegy for a Pig”. It was so sad and the only one that didn’t start with the canned intro footage.

We were blessed with many great shows when we were young but this one was a favorite in my family. Yes, more Adam-12 please.

My Dad was an Atlanta cop for 45 years and when I was a kid (around 1970), he'd take me to work with him at APD HQ. On the inside it looked just like the opening scenes on Adam-12, even the radio room, which was my favorite. When I watch now, it remi ds me of those days and my Dad who has been gone for 23 years now.

I loved all of Jack Webb's shows. They were based on real life and took stories from real events. Yes, there was dramatic license, but Webb always believed in keeping it close to what happened as he said the drama and the comedy were both in real life. It made me respect cops and fire fighters at the time. I wish cops now were like they were shown then, maybe we wouldn't have as many issues as we do. Reed and Malloy as well as Sgt Friday and his partner Gannon held themselves to a higher standard and to set the example. Today's cops don't. Not a day goes by when I don't see cops breaking the laws that they're sworn to uphold and would arrest or write a ticket to the rest of us for doing. Then they turn around and complain that police don't get respect?! You have to EARN respect it's not given. many people stand down from cops out of fear for the gun that they carry and the potential of wrongful arrest, NOT because of respect. It was easy to respect the cops on these shows, they treated everyone fairly, helped when they could, and always tried to be above the fray to show a good example.

I watched Adam-12 reruns in the 70's as a teen...Channel 11 in Dallas...and I loved it...just four years ago, I re-watched every episode...and I was able to appreciate it more...it was a fantastic series...I wish we had TV shows like it today...

I used to watch Adam-12, Dragnet, and Emergency as a kid in the late 60s and the 70s. I still watch them today on MeTV. I love seeing old L.A. and how smoggy the city was back then. Adam-12 was done so well that many episodes were used as training films by the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies. It was quite the tribute to Jack Webb when he died, that at his funeral the LAPD provided a full honor guard and the same treatment as a fallen LAPD officer. Adam-12 also had an effect on actor Kent McCord (Reed), he became an actual cop, serving as a reserve officer from 2005-2009 in the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD).

Yes 🎉 Definitely make more videos on Adam 12! My Dad was a PO, starting in the early 70s. We would watch this show together when I was a child. Your videos and facts are great! I found it very interesting about the sharpshooter medals that they wore. I never knew that before. Reed always reminded me of my Dad. Now, when I watch episodes, even though my dad has passed, I feel close to him and maybe just maybe he is watching with me.

I think I became a Policeman because of Adam 12. 30 year career! Jack Webb was suppose to be such a stickler for authenticity but there are several things that crack me and my fellow real Police Officers up . The main thing is the call sign of 1 Adam 12. Adam 12 was filmed using the LAPD Rampart Division. The call signs for Rampart marked units do NOT begin with the number 1. Some things very minor such as not using military time, to this mysterious break room cafeteria where the Officers gather to have meals. But over all I love Adam 12. 5:43

More details: The LAPD uniform has secrets that make it look very official. It is not black (which looks cheap close up) but has a very deep, dark blue color. The buttons on the epaulets and front pocket flaps are special subdued gray (to not reflect light at night) metal buttons bearing the words "Los Angeles Police" and held in place by metal fasteners. The buttons must be removed and replaced for dry cleaning of the shirt. The tie bar is a plain, brushed dull bar (to prevent reflection of light at night). Unlike other police departments, there are no (LAPD) shoulder patches for patrol officers. Military medals/ribbons (federal and state) may be worn below the badge and above LAPD ribbons. The badge has secrets too. It was designed by Chief Bill Parker to be a complete break away from other badges (and the LAPD's scandals in the 1930's), and it stopped using the usual eagle on top and point at the bottom design. Instead, it has a brilliant sunburst design with alternating raised and lowered sunbeams radiating from the center of the badge, behind City Hall. It is large and has a modern and somewhat oval type shape. It actually had a copyright to prevent other agencies from using it, although the copyright has since expired and there are a flood of agencies that are copying and adapting its appearance. The "medallions" described in the video are called shooting medals. They must be worn on the right end of the pocket flap beneath the badge. LAPD officers are required to "qualify" (shoot with a qualifying score) every other month, but do not receive any medals for this. There is another optional bonus qualification course that awards the shooting medal and gives a modest monthly pay bonus. There are four levels of medals: Marksman (300/400 points, $8/mo), Sharpshooter (340/400 points, $16/mo), Expert (380/400 points, $32/mo), Distinguished Expert (2,310/2,400 points in any consecutive six-month period, $64/mo). Malloy is wearing a "DX" (Distinguished Expert) medal (title bars have two rows); Reed is wearing a Sharpshooter medal (silver; Marksman is brass). The police cars back then were called "tin cans" because of the metal containers used to mount the red (front) and amber (rear) lights on the roof. Inaccuracy: Malloy is a training officer to Reed, and as such, Malloy should be wearing "P3" (Police Officer III) stripes (similar to military corporal stripes) without the star. (Reed is correctly not wearing any insignia). Malloy's insignia identifies him as a "P3+1" (Police Officer III+1), which is a hard to earn rank that identifies him as a very experienced and highly valued police officer -- usually used in Metro, SWAT and community relations.

When I was a kid my family watched Adam 12 and Emergency every week. Adam 12 is still one of my favorite police shows of all time . Another one my family watched every week was Rockford Files.

Yep! I, too, was inspired to become a police officer by this series. Later in my career I shared that story with my chief who had retired from LAPD and he just chuckled! Not sure the series showed what it was really like compared to what we all wanted it to be like, but it was a great show! I hardly miss an episode now!

Wife and I watch Emergency followed by 2 episodes of Adam-12 most week nights on FETV. Hard to beat these 2 shows for their technically accurate details. We love the drama and the humor put into the shows. They dealt with a lot of real life issues and situations. We both had watched these shows as kids, but we see them in totally different light as an adult. Really enjoy picking out actors who went on to be big names in the future. One reoccurring actor that was on both shows playing the antagonist to the main characters was Gary Crosby (son of Bing). He played up the part well and kept the rivalry going that made things not so comfortable for the main stars. Thanks for putting in the work to make these videos. Awesome content!

Adam 12 was one of my favorite shows growing up. I still watch it today. I truly loved the realism of Police work that was shown.

I grew up in LA with Adam 12 and Dragnet and my Dad being an officer with LAPD. I loved the show, loved the authenticity and the time period of the 1960s. I ended up joining LASD not LAPD but both are great organizations and no regrets.

Just heard of Adam-12 one week back. Really liked how simple and straightforward it was, just following the 2 policemen around. Now am becoming a fan 😊 Thanks for your video Rick!

Terrific video and I vote for more Adam 12. I've seen all the episodes, multiple times, and really am a big fan of the series. I loved the day to day adventures of LAPD officers. The cases, from a lost kid, to a robbery, to kidnapping, all across the spectrum. The playful banter between Reed and Malloy was always great. Mac, their sergeant, as well as the other supporting characters. It's a great time capsule of LA in that period and showed commendable work being done by the officers. Of course times have changed, LA got a lot rougher and the image of police very different, but just a fun look back. I also like to see old neighborhoods, etc. (I grew up in LA). Keep up the excellent work.

I'd love to learn more behind-the-scenes info about this show. I grew up with Adam-12. A few years ago, I bought it on DVD. I especially love the early dynamic where Malloy chooses not to retire so he can mentor Reed. I also love that, for all its straight-arrow nature, Malloy will point out that adults on alcohol have no moral superiority to kids on drugs. There are even episodes where it's made clear the hippies are the good guys in the scenario. For an "establishment" series, it was pretty even-handed. Speaking of the pilot, it cracks me up that Ann Guilbert--Millie Helper on The Dick Van Dyke Show--turns up having a freakout on the street. Can't remember if her character was supposed to be drunk or what, but it's a great, broad comedy moment on a show that was generally so low-key and realistic.

On my off days, at 5pm, I'm sitting on the recliner watching Adam 12 on METV. I've seen all the episodes but I don't care. Love that show.

Thank you, Adam 12!! To the actors, writers, the music, the authenticity, and so on--THANK YOU! This was my first favorite cop show. I was hooked right away. (Then or course I watched the others, such as The Rookies, SWAT, Hill Street Blues, Emergency! (I know, that’s a fire show), COPS, and so many more. There are pictures of me at 5 years old directing traffic in a police uniform, duty belt, gun (plastic/fake of course), hat, you name it! Oh, and where was I directing traffic? Well, I’m almost ashamed to say that it was in our driveway. No cars, just an occasional bicycle from any of my five siblings and some friends. Most didn’t pay attention but I didn’t have the Horsepower to go in-pursuit! I went into the field of Public Safety the first chance I could. I was an 2020 Ford Exp Limited AWD Fire Chief from age 15 to age 18, then I was a 911 dispatcher (still hold the record of being the youngest new-hire for a full time position at my department, I was 18 years old and had just graduated high school. Those three years as Explorer Chief prepared me very well for the jobs that were ahead of me. I worked all four: Firefighter, EMT, Firefighter/EMT, 911 Police/Fire/Paramedic Dispatcher, 911 Supervisor, and Police Officer which is the career I retired from. I knew I’d end up pushing a black and white around town, making car stops, going in foot pursuit, car pursuits, and all of the fun and not-very-fun things police officers have to do. I don’t think I would want to work in a PD today. That’s too big of a topic, but it has to do with the way police officers are handled by politicians and Police Chiefs (who are politicians as well….you do not become a Police Chief unless you’ve attended a bunch of rubber-chicken dinners and gotten up in front of the crowd at the podium to say how happy you are to be there and the food is wonderful, even though you’re tired, your kids are waiting for you, and the food stinks). These days, cops are considered guilty unless proven innocent, but that rule only applies to cops with a light colored skin and if that officer harmed someone with darker colored skin. You have no idea what it’s like working like that. I never paid one bit of attention to someone’s skin color. Several of my coworkers, friends, and Supervisors had darker skin than me, but it was NEVER an issue. I think the people with race issues are liberals. It’s all they talk about. I will get off my soap box because this is a fun video to watch! I’ve been watching some episodes of this on……..I forget. One of the streaming services. I think it’s either Netflix or Prime Video. So fun to watch how innocent they are.

Jack Webb played a minor role in the movie, He Walked by Night (1948). During filming, he overheard the LAPD detectives, who were technical advisors, talk about how there wasn’t any show/movie accurately depicting police work. And thus, Dragnet was born, first on radio and then television.

Another great video! Growing up I always watched Dragnet and Adam-12, in fact I still watch Dragnet regularly! It is really fun to watch the shows from that time period and compare the policies and procedures they used then compared to today. It is also interesting to see how some laws have changed over the years. Jack Webb was a genius! I cast my vote to see more Adam-12 videos and would love to see you dive into Dragnet! There were several different seasons and different actors that played Joe Friday's partners over the years which makes the show so much more interesting!

Adam-12 is one of my favorite shows. The whole cast always looked very sharp in their uniforms. I liked how, in the first two seasons, as the ending theme music played, the action kept going. It was as if they were saying “Reed and Malloy may be off watch but the LAPD always rolls on.”

Adam-12 was the police show that steered me to law enforcement. I loved the charactors and how they portrayed officers .

I have been watching Adam-12 for the last 30 years! I still think it's a great show and I have many favorite episodes but I particularly enjoy the episodes where there is a lot of camaraderie between the officers and the brass. Those types of relationships make me feel good because I feel human beings need to treat each other with respect at all times regardless of who they are or where they are socially. I also particularly enjoyed how the officer Welles character grows during the series from kind of a Wiseguy to a very Regular Joe. Watching Adam 12. I made the decision that I wanted to be a cop. I joined the army became an M.P. When I got out. I joined the Hoboken Police Dept. Loved being M .P. And a Police Officer. Everytime I watch Adam 12 brings back many memories.👮‍♂️👮‍♂️👮‍♂️👮‍♂️

My favorite character was actor Burt Mustin. I always got a smile when he played one of his characters in the show.

Watched the show from the beginning when it originally aired. I was a kid and my brothers and I were fascinated. It also gave us a little insight to our dad's work as a county deputy sheriff.

Even as a kid watching Adam-12, I always thought Kent McCord's portrayal of Reed was incredibly wooden, particularly in the early episodes. But then when I grew up, and eventually became a police Field Training Officer, I discovered this was EXACTLY how rookie officers acted, especially in the presence of a senior or training officer! It would take a lot of time for these guys to loosen up, as it did for Reed in the series. (Incidentally, unlike Malloy, I ALWAYS had the trainee do the driving, as it was one of the items on which the trainee was evaluated.)

Rick your right on the money, I lived in LA during the time this first aired and got to hear the woman dispatcher live when during police day at our school I could hear her on the police officers and he told us, yes that is the real girl that was on TV. I was a student at Greenfield Elementary in Montebello, CA. so long ago, many miles as well. Yes I really liked the show and it was very inspiring, my younger brother became a Cop and was one for 23 years. I served in the Marines, another brother served in the Army and last but not least one became a preacher. Please do more on Adam 12 and any thing with Jack Web, I really wanted to meet him but just didn't happen. 👍👍👍👍👍❤️🇺🇸

I watched Adam 12 every week and I became a police officer in 1974. Milner's Maloy was my favorite character on the show. I've watched most documentaries about this show and enjoy them. I knew Jack Web was behind the show, but I did not know he was 'John Randolph.' I downloaded the first year of Adam 12 a while back and noticed a lot of things that spoke to the realistic detail. One was the Fuzzy Farrant grips on Maloy's service revolver. That is some serious detail! Fuzzy Farrant was a retired LAPD officer who made custom revolver grips to fit the officer's hands. A pair of Farrant grips, if you can find them today will cost you several hundred dollars. I just subscribed to your channel, keep the Adam 12 videos coming and Dragnet would be a good project as well.

I loved Adam 12 when I was a kid and started re-watching during the lockdown on ME TV. As a kid, I never noticed that the same background cars were used so often. There is a gold Mustang with a white top that appears at least once in almost every episode. Of course there is the blue '61 Corvette that makes numerous appearances and the gold LTD, burgundy Ford Cortina and all the Cadillacs in the background. Never gets old!

I always enjoyed watching Adam-12! I liked it for the realism with subtle humor sprinkled throughout.

One of my favorite facts about the show is that Martin Milner's son was on an episode as a stunt rider. When Pete and Jim are chasing a kid on a motorcycle, the actor that they stop on the bike is Johnny Whitaker (Family Affair), but the kid who REALLY rode the motorcycle for the chase was Milner's son.

Cool video; more of Adam-12 would be great. BTW, Shaaron Claridge's voice could also be heard as a police operator in other productions. For example: An episode of Columbo and in the Disney film The Boatniks.

In one of the Adam-12 episodes, you can see a crappy, mall type storefront in a shot, with “SCIENTOLOGY” proudly (ugh!) emblazoned across the top front of the building. I had to laugh at how sad and low-rent it looked!💕

In some ways it feels more realistic than modern shows because it deals with the mundane as well as the gritty. The stories, drawn from real life, just as often deal with two old ladies or neighbors arguing than constant gunfights. It shows part of the cops work isn't just arresting felons but also acting as peacemakers as well as peacekeepers. This allows for some humor as well, for instance the time one woman thought a rattlesnake was in her suitcase but it turned out to be her electric toothbrush.

One of my favorite shows of all time. I still watch and enjoy it.

Loved Adam 12 as a child. I haven't seen an episode in almost 50 years. Yes please do more and anything Jack Webb is great. Personally, I prefer the '50s Dragnet to the '60s . You can talk about Adam 12 co-stars such as Gary Crosby which was arguably the apex of his career (aside from his hit duets with his father, Bing back in the early '50s).

I liked Pete Malloy/Martin Milner and considered myself very similar in style and attitude when I became an officer in Arlington, TX. Adam-12 was probably the main reason I became an officer and later a training officer training the new Jim Reeds. (When making training videos for Arlington, I did my take-off on Adam-12). I'm fixing to retire after 45 years of police work and still like watching Adam-12 (brings back memories of the good days of law enforcement). Thanks for the interesting videos of the show Rick!
