It baffles me to hear ourselves shaking our heads when white institutions don't induct our singers, WHY would it bother you? Rock n Roll is the step child of the Delta Blues, Elvis grew up sneaking into black churches, listening to Big Mama Thornton. We didn't need them they needed us. And what they acquired they retained and never stopped producing it. Black folks abandoned the bands and opted out for the MTV platforms back in the late 80's. Run DMC, Rick James, Michael Jackson protesting the all of black entertainers on white platforms as if whites are the final definers of black talent. When with kids were the highest consumer groups of Hip Hop music mid 90s to early 2006 at its height we failed to consolidate ourselves as entrepreneurs, essentially selling ourselves out as servants for hire instead of proud owners of our own culture. Be proud black people for your God given talents. Embrace it and nourish it as a gift not a commodity.

This reminds me so much of my daddy too. Life is confusing right now, and I cling to the memories of simpler times! Sometimes when he would pick me up after school and it would be just the two of us, he would get the records out and play his songs! Slingers, Harold Melvin and the blue notes, blue magic, stylistics, Michael Henderson, bloodstone, and so many more. I can see him sitting there, buffing his albums with a towel, setting the needle, and telling me all about the artists, where they’re from, what year the songs came out, where he was, what they used to wear. Best daddy ❤️❤️❤️

Great job telling the story of Phillippe's life. He is, without any doubt, the greatest R&B lead of his era. I was overwhelmed with his voice, style and energy. Daryl Hall (one of the greatest underrated singers imo, not just in the blue eyed soul genre but period) of Hall & Oates has said he was doing his best impression of Phillipe on the song Sara Smile and that much of his singing style was inspired of him and other singers, especially those from the Philly soul genre. In 2004 the group actually ended up covering I'll Be Around to pay tribute and got a AC hit out of it, def recommend looking up live performances of that cover bc they did the song justice

Thank you, Thank you for doing this story. Talking about a R & B group that's never getting their musical props, The Spinners especially Phillipe Wynn. If anyone in the comments haven't heard of them yet please check them out. You won't be disappointed. Many people also didn't know that Phillipe Wynn was singing in the song by Funkadelic/Parliament .( George Clinton)"I got ants in my pants and I need to dance " in the song Knee Deep. He was freestyling when that song was being recorded.

Just like David Ruffin was the voice of The Temptations, Philippe Wynne was the voice of The Spinners. Bobbie Smith and Philippe Wynne sounds just alike. You forgot to add the story that when they finished cutting “then came you”, Dionne had a strange look on her face. Bobby asked her what was up, she motioned with the lukewarm hand gesture, and said ‘that song ain’t good’… Bobby said to her ‘I’ll tell you something, if this song ain’t a hit, I owe you a dollar, if this song is a hit, you owe me a dollar!’… she said deal. And a few months later when it hit big, Bobby received an envelope from Dionne with a dollar bill in it. Also,… It’s been Rumored that Phillipe like to ‘Sniff the White stuff’, so that might’ve accelerated his demise when it did.

I went back and forth with GC about the 8 at his funeral story about 16 years ago on the internet about this. I couldn't believe it. Yes he may have been a bit arrogant but he was also a great singer with a larger than life personality. There was a small wake that his family hosted where that number was low. However, he had another big funeral somewhere else where many attended including the Spinners.

I will always feel blessed to have seen their concert performance in Philadelphia. That was the first time that I saw them live even though I grew up on their music. Man, that was a show. Philippe downfall started when he left the Spinners. He was doing so good while with the group, hitting numerous top 1 hits back-to-back. So selfish of him to want to rename the group making himself the top star of the group. I love Philippe singing style just as I love the group as a whole. I just wished he had remained with the Spinners and continued making those number one hits. He had a voice like no other, no denying that. But his voice was best with the group.
