Oh, sweet baby Jesus, I don't know much about how the Pixar branch of Disney has been faring in terms of paying the animators, but I hope that these guys *at least* got decent pay after the sheer amount of brain cells were used on these designs and the quality of the animation.

So, to preface what I'm about to say- I'm definitely going to watch it, because I love animated movies and probably would have watched it no matter what, if only to reward the animators trying something more out there. However, for some reason, my brain REALLY does not like the fire people, and I can't figure out why. In some scenes it's totally fine, but then I'll see them in another clip and they just look...off? I've watched a whole bunch of clips trying to figure out what it is that's bothering my brain, and the best I can figure out is that it's maybe reminding me of badly animated lava from my childhood. But I'm going to push down the annoying part of my brain that doesn't like it, because I know it's NOT badly/lazily animated. So I look forward to watching it, and I'm glad to hear that at least it seems pretty cute!

It's weird we haven't got a straight forward romance from either Pixar or Disney since Wall-E and Tangled respectively. I think the fact that it was a more straightforward romance was what made this movie feel meh. Pixar is more known for exploring the different types of love that someone can experience and that was way more special because every other studio is so focused on romance and usually forces it. And also the fact that this type of forbidden love trope honestly is overdone.

I'm in agreement that this would've served much better as a short. The idea of people based on the elements on how they get along and establish inter-relationships with each other sounds like a super neat idea for a short. But for a full length film, you can tell they struggled once they got past the conceptual stage. I think a simple short film following multiple couples of different elements and how they managed to work off each others' strengths and weaknesses would've been a cute idea.

Not every Pixar film needs to be life-changing experience. Elemental is a visual masterpiece with easy to understand plot and themes, soft-worldbuilding, and character based narrative. It deals with romance, immigration, racism and family. It's a sweet story and it works...if this was in cinemas 20 years ago it would now be a relative cult-classic Pixar film...we have learned to have so much high expectations from films that we can't enjoy anything nice anymore...

The problem with that perspective is that it isn't twenty years ago. Other studios are innovating in terms of animation, world building and/or mature themes, whereas Pixar is stuck creating cute stories about "x with feelings" or sequels for previous films. Probably, being controlled by Disney has something to do with it, but it is a pity, nevertheless.

Yes it's simple... yes it feels like Disney Animation Studios couldn't figure this out, threw it at Pixar and said "fix it, but still make the deadline" but it's just so wholesome... I can't recommend it for kids under 8, just because there isn't much in this Rom-com for them to enjoy... but as an adult, I loved this film. It's not up to Pixar standards, but at the same time, you can tell Pixar's soul is there. I'm just super thrilled to see the "exclusively in theaters" logo again, and I will watch this again, just to support them, because they deserve it, and we deserve the best from them... so let's agree it's okay to be okay, just this once, and push this film to be just barely successful enough that it won’t bankrupt the company... and give them an honest attempt to produce the film we all know they're capable of making. If this is the blow that relegates Pixar to streaming-only status, I'd be crushed. Excellent video! Spoilers ahead. If you haven't seen Elemental, go watch it. I loved how Wade's character arc was finally finding somebody genuine. His entire family wants nothing but the best, but it's offered unconditionally. He could pursue any career, to any degree of success, or run away, and they'd never be anything other than happy for him. We see this when he can't hold a job. He has all of the pieces on the surface but he's never experienced genuine criticism, motivation, or anything other than "you're perfect no matter what, as long as you're happy, we're happy" and that's an insanely hollow, toxic relationship. Cue Ember. She too views her life as a failure, but for the extreme opposite reason... way too much pressure. Though her parents weren't harsh, and certainly endearing... they set an incredibly high bar, even if unintentionally, for Ember to clear... even if it was all in her head, it was always a much tougher love... that always came with the conditions and pressure of living up to your parents legacy, who literally founded a community. That's why she's so reluctant around Wade, and doesn't really affirm her love for him until he's dying trying to save her. All the growth she experienced up to that point was getting to enjoy life in general, with basically no consequences... to live a little... and eventually, Wade gets Ember to come out of her shell. Meanwhile every discussion and interaction Wade has with Ember is genuine, and covers the entire emotional spectrum... he's probably never had that experience from a peer or parental figure before... it's a beautiful arc.

My 7 year old enjoyed it, and so did I. It's better than a lot of the other "love story for kids" out there, especially all the straight-to-streaming stuff that our kids were stuck with for 3 years due to the pandemic. I'm considering taking my 4 year old to it as a first movie because I think it might be interesting enough for them. There is so much immigrant commentary in this movie that goes right over a kids head, but that a good number of adults will get ("What's your name? How do you spell that? Let's just officially name you something else"). I think that this is on par with the Cars movies - has a lot of care and heart in it, not the greatest plot out there, but still something that I'm happy enough to show my kids based on the overall message. If it had been a Dreamworks movie people would be raving about it.

My feelings to this film are similar to how I feel about Onward, in that while it wasn’t the most spectacular film Pixar has put out, there are aspects about it that hit so personally that it got more tears out of me than some of the studio’s masterpieces. I, an American-born male, recently got out of a long term relationship with a Vietnam-born female immigrant. Many of the conversations about Ember and her obligation to her family vs her own aspirations are conversations my ex-partner told me she had with her parents. We held conversations about how she felt so profoundly different from others in our society, and how it caused pain for her, but there were moments where despite her and I’s differences, there was simply magic in the air. Seeing her eyes fill with wonder as we explored our part of the world together was something truly magical, and I absolutely bursted into tears during the scene where Wade showed Ember the flower and did nothing but bask in her happiness. Some time has passed and I’ve begun to make my peace with the split, as we mutually decided it was for the best at this point in our lives. But the story Wade tells of “the old man on his deathbed, remembering the ‘summer’ he fell in love, letting her go, sure that summer will come again, but then it didn’t,” also provided some meaningful closure. This film felt very personal, and I will probably always associate it to a personal story of mine. It came out at just the right time to move me, and I’m glad I saw it. I, for one, love the trend of Pixar films telling stories so personal or that might be more profound to a smaller subset of people, rather than a mass appealing moral everyone can connect to. There is a place for both kinds of stories to be told, in my opinion.

@TheMusicGirlsWorld
@TheMusicGirlsWorld Жыл бұрын
I would add that one benefit of releasing movies that have such personal touches and themes to a smaller subset is that hopefully it helps the larger subset be familiar with and understand those struggles. Getting personally invested in and understanding the world of a fictional equivalent to a situation like this can be (I think) helpful to give those who have never even gotten close to being in that situation understand why someone would react, act, or feel a certain way in their situation. Or even just thinking about this scenario in a thoughtful way rather than on a surface level. This is especially important for kid's films because you can imagine how important it is for kids to be aware and understand struggles of others to hopefully build up a perspective in adulthood of acceptance and understanding.

This movie connected to me in a personal aspect as well. That’s why I absolutely love it so much. My family is very strict like Ember’s and my parents are immigrants too. Seeing how much Ember’s parents sacrificed for her by moving to make her have a good life made me think of all of the things my parents did. My parents have always been telling me to make them proud by being something like a doctor or a scientist so I can be successful in this new country when I really just want to be something simple like a musician or an artist. It’s really hard for me to tell them that I don’t want to because of literally the same reasons as Ember and this movie touched my heart so much. I also have lots of anger issues but I tend to bottle them up unlike Ember, but it ends up causing a lot of problems for me. Seeing how Ember was able to show her true feelings in the end of the movie (with the help of Wade) gave me a bit of hope that maybe I can tell my parents how I really feel too. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry in the theater watching this movie. It was truly unexpected as well. I went in thinking it would be something funny like Zootopia but I was mind blown when it started. I would do anything to see it for the first time again it was amazinggg!

This movie genuinely did rock my world, because I've never seen an animated film handle the struggles of being the child of immigrants the way Elemental handled it. It was beautiful and heartbreaking to hear Ember talk about not feeling good enough to make things up to her father for the sacrifice he made to give them a better life. And her fight with Wade at the train station in the final act was a great representation of how couples who are different races or from different economic classes can struggle in not understanding each other's barriers in society.

I saw this movie a few days ago with some friends and we all loved it. Even my theater was having fun. I think the problem with calling it “cliche” or “already done before” is that the source material hits really close to home for many people. One of the friends I saw it with is second generation Nigerian, and another one who saw it before us is first generation Puerto Rican, and both of them RAVED about how accurate it was. Especially Embers story of finding your own path when you feel indebted to your parents. I think it’s slightly wrong to call a modern issue being delt with in storytelling “cliche” when it should be more of a sign of underlying issues that are still prevalent in society that artists are working through personally.

Personally I appreciate the fact that a movie has something on its mind more than the allegory being absolutely watertight. Cuz newsflash: no allegory is watertight. Zootopia for example (cuz I haven't seen Elemental yet) is certainly inspired by real life social issues and wants to remind us of them, but at the end of the day it is very much its own world, where predator and prey live together and the tensions that come with that. Of course that's not identical to the real world - because it's not the real world - but it may create some sensibilities for issues like it, how they happen and how to deescalate. Overthinking popculture can be a very fun creative excercise but it honestly annoys me that people keep confusing it with genuine criticism.

Yeah I’ve seen people say that Elemental doesn’t really have too good of an allegory because it’s using things that could literally kill each other if they’re not careful and that doesn’t happen in real life and say Zootopia does it better. But I feel like taking the fantastical circumstances of the movie world’s racism at face value and trying to align them to reality is not a door you wanna open when trying to determine which ones did it well. In Zootopia, as much as I adore that movie, had it’s racism rooted in the fact that historically one “race” as a whole constantly ate the other.

@@parycartoons6840 Which is why I'm saying that's a faulty way of looking at allegories because allegories are never perfect. I don't think the movie or anyone in the production team ever said "this is how racism works"! The movie is about societal tensions, prejudice (like bunnies are dumb, foxes are untrustworthy) and how the past is making things really difficult but its worth to keep trying. This is what the movie had to say. Not a 1-on-1 reflection of real social issues along with a solution for how to fix them. Everyone who expected that misunderstood how allegories are supposed to work.

I wish the movie was a friendship instead, but that is just a super subjective take. I'm simply someone who is kinda tired of romances because, in my own experiences, the most meaningful connections I've made outside of family are with my friends. Also, I feel as an Anthropologist a better alegory for cultural/divergent cohabitation would be a respectful friendship. Especially since all the accommodation allegory for the flame people reminds me of my own experiences surrounding my own disabilites[yes, very subjective XD]. But I also can't judge the film too harshly based off of that, nor do I wish to invalidate anyone who finds meaning/value in the central relationship plot. I will see it's digital release whenever I can to satiate my curiosity, since I get nauseous looking at the flow of the fire and water characters. Nice update on your avatar, Cell. I'll admit I had some doubts when it came to the usual tropes, like the 'meet the parents' or 'breaking barriers' scenarios, as well as the 'polar opposites/rivals becoming friends' concept seen in other Pixar films. But after seeing the movie myself, I was relieved with how the story turned out. The backstory for Ember's parents was captivating and everything after Wade's initial debut felt organic, such as fixing the dam issue in a short amount of time building all the character interactions. Not to mention the animation and music were breathtaking, and the film did an amazing job playing around with the elements, especially when developing Wade and Ember's relationship. I do think, though, that maybe they could've delved a little more into how the city works with all the elements and show us more on how the earth and wind citizens function there. Beyond that, I had a great time watching this film and I really hope it'll earn more money while it's still in theaters. Also, that "Up" short was very sweet.

I was looking forward to it because the teaser told me exactly what it would be. A romantic comedy of opposites attracting. The father/daughter storyline wasn't a surprise in the fact that I assumed romance wasn't going to be the only plot, but I loved that the two stories fed nicely into one another and that the father/daughter storyline represented a immigrants with a child real life experience of the director. On top of that I enjoy opposites attracting in my fictional romance watching, so fire and water might as well be the height of that type of romance. And along with fire and water comes teaching things about science without making it seem like that's what the story was doing (the movie said the two changed their chemistry's, when in real life they change only on a thermodynamic and physical level when another substance is added, and in the movie's case, the substance is love). Like most movies people can learn through both reality and fiction. Add to all that, it looks as great as all Pixar films. This was an under-rated movie in my opinion. Most pixar films are. None of them are outright bad. It's just about whether you like them or not.

The difference between the reception of this film to the Mario movie is proof that people have pretty terrible double standards when it comes to Pixar and Disney. Look, as a Mario fan and someone who enjoyed the Mario movie, there are still issues with it that would cause people to rip it to shreds if it was produced by Disney or Pixar. Yet, people still generally like it and made tons and tons of money. As someone who likes both movies, I somewhat agree. The reason why Mario worked for plenty of people (outside of the brand recognition and some the low expectations) is because it stayed in its lane and gave what the general audience wanted for a Mario Movie in almost 30 years of absence from the big screen. Elemental had an uphill battle to fight since its concept reveal. The vast majority literally made fun of its premise (the love story) and they focused on that over everything else. The real story (the immigration experience) might have been a bit difficult to sell to the vast market, so they didn't bother highlighting it during market. Which is a shame because it's a cool idea and I like how it portrayed in the movie. Either way, I think expectations have a huge factor into how people take in movies, and 2023's theatrical animation slate is the true test of that, just like you said.

I think it's a shame people tend to lock onto one metaphor. Yeah, the film leans into the elements as different races, but it's also a film about ableism and the destructiveness of ambivalence. I loved that Element City was both beautiful and hostile, and how the water people tend not to think about that because the city is foremost designed with them in mind. And pretty much any elemental has the potential to harm another kind of elemental, but SPOILER ALERT it's worth noting that when they consciously don't want to hurt each other and put effort into it, they don't hurt each other. Maybe a bit of discomfort, but that's it. I thought a neurodivergent reading was particularly interesting because the fire people’s emotional outbursts are so heavily shamed whereas the water people’s is normalised, even though it is potentially lethal to fire people. There were definitely things that bothered me, like the way the city council does nothing to fix a potentially lethal hazard to fire people, and that at the end of the film, Ember has still absorbed the city’s ambivalence towards her needs and considers it her fault. But overall, I enjoyed the film.

I felt very fascinated with the concept of a world populated by the chemistry of elements, just like how I loved the concept of a world populated by talking cars, though that's another story. Hence, I also felt emotional with the romantic scenes as I nearly cried out of happiness and enjoyment.

What elemental had done was put all of its money into the actual movie, and almost none into marketing. Despite it being a actually good movie, people had thought it was horrible due to its marketing. What i also saw was that it had the perfect movie romance in this generation of horrible obsession with everything not hetero, this movie made everything normal, like anything could happen between two people, without it being obsessed over, or hated.

This movie had plenty of money dumped into marketing. I saw trailers of this movie constantly, and I couldn't drive 5 minutes without seeing Ember and Wade on a billboard or bus advertisment. They even have a McDonald's Happy Meal toyline going on. The issue was that the marketing was BAD. For some reason they painted the movie as being a generic forbidden love story about two of the most predictable elements to write a love story about. People were already predicting all the plot points before it even came out, and that's... not a good sign. And unlike something like The Bad Guys or The Last Wish, even people who do defend the movie aren't exactly calling it spectacular, at least not enough to justify seeing this over Spiderverse. So I doubt it'll get too far from word of mouth advertising either

tbh you could probably say the movie's good without making a dig at lgbtq people... i'm a gay person and i still liked this movie a lot. i also think it could still be equally good if it was gay. i just don't think it's a movie that should be judged in reference to that whole debate at all

Elemental was so spot on with it's correlation with racism that zootopia never accomplished. One-liners like Wade's mother saying how fire people made most buildings and knowing the local govt ignored a dangerous hazard conveniently targeting a specific element feels very spot on without having to hold your hand through the allegory. That AND it's through the lens of an interracial relationship to highlight the lived differences between each element. Idk what people are saying about how it doesn't work. The details of this movie both in environment and pieces of dialogue feel very intentional and mature for a family movie, I enjoyed it a lot!

Honestly, i just kind of feel bad for this movie. It seems really sweet and not the monumental thing that people expect out of pixar. The marketing shot the movie dead on arrival because as soon as twitter noticed the pink cloud lady it was over.

"it's not that they're terrible, it's that are they worth how expensive theatres have gotten?" i saw spiderverse in theatre with my bf and luckily went on a day when tickets were 30% off. i paid a little under $30, but if i went any other day it would have been over $40. not counting drinks or food. i remember my grandpa used to take my brother and i as kids out to almost every animated movie that released as a treat. deciding to see a movie in theatres right now is like a huge gamble and you have to decide whether or not you want to risk seeing a bad/mediocre movie for over $20 usd per person or just rent it/wait until the streaming option releases. it kinda sucks because going to see a movie in theatre was fun thing you could do if there wasn't much other entertainment where you lived, especially as a rural kid.

It sucks that every Pixar movie is held up against the classics. That's a huge shadow for any creator. A movie can't just be its own thing it's gotta be compared to your childhood favorites. That said, I thought Elemental was very fun! I appreciate that's it's a CARTOON in that it was clear the animators were having lots of fun solving creative problems in expressive ways.

All the ads I had heard for Elemental had been about the city, the city, oh isn't it so interesting that there's an elemental city. Right before it opened, I heard an ad that mentioned that it was a love story...and that they save the city. This is Wii U levels of bad marketing.

Seeing this video's title on the home page two days ago was very encouraging! : ) I saw the movie today and it exceeded my expectations. The trailer made me think it was just another iteration of Overwhelming Parental Expectations combined with Opposites Attract. I really appreciated the exploration of the culture clash and the immigration experience. The romance was sweet. Wade did feel like a bit much at first, but as the movie went on, his transparently emotional personality was kind of refreshing (and after we learn he lost his dad, it made sense that he zeroed in on Ember's in the family picture). And I loved how colorful it was - the light and water effects were beautiful. As for "Carl's Date", I was disappointed that we never met Ms. Meyers, but Carl preparing himself to go out at all is a worthy story. I thought the end credits of Up implied that Carl ended up moving into Shady Oaks, though (I haven't seen Dug Days)?

It would have been more interesting if the elementals serve some kind of higher function. The world buildings might not have made 100% sense in Soul, Inside Out and Coco, but they offer fun fantastical explorations of real world ideas and concepts. The elementals existing just as people is not as interesting

Honestly, this video sold me on the movie more than literally everything they've marketed. Besides the pretty animation, I've had zero interest in this movie, especially after hearing from a few SEA people who didn't like how so many assimilation aspects were played for laughs. I know this story is based on the director's experience as a Korean-American, but I'm wondering how much studio interference was involved because, from what I know of the story, I wish this could have been a bit stronger narratively. Like you said, this might have worked better as a short, just because they can only do so much with this idea. I suppose it's my own fault for always wanting some big, ground-breaking, character story like Inside Out, Turning Red, or even Luca, but an okay Pixar film is still a good film period. I do hope Peter Sohn still gets another chance because with the reception to this and The Good Dinosaur, I'm sure he doesn't feel great, but he clearly has interesting ideas that deserve their time to shine.

In my defense, I already had four other movies to watch in June. Spider-Verse, Transformers: ROTB, The Flash, and Indiana Jones. So I had to try and save money. But with Elemental, I’ll just wait for it to come out on Disney Plus. Might just be the fault of bad marketing for not making the movie look good. So I look forward to when Elemental comes out on Disney Plus.

For me the big fall down of world building from Pixar wasn’t Cars (I mean, it’s sentient cars, come on), it was Onward. It just felt so fundamentally lazy that a world with a huge variety of creatures of so many different sizes basically just ends up looking exactly like our world. Like, why? How? At a core basic level the needs of these creatures should have resulted in a different world that accommodates more of them instead of cramming a centaur into a car clearly built for somebody human sized. It’s not even really the logistics that bother me, it’s the lack of creativity and the massive missed opportunity to do something way more interesting. And I got a similar feel from the trailers to this. While I won’t say there isn’t at least a part of me going “that doesn’t make sense” there’s a much louder part of me going “that’s the best you could come up with for this premise?” To compare to Zootopia, that movie probably doesn’t make much more logistical sense but the city was so much more visually fascinating for how it was clearly thought through for how you’d make something that accommodates such a variety of inhabitants.

12:53 Rejoice CellSpex, because Elemental just passed Lightyear's box office numbers by almost 30 million! Elemental has only been out for less than a month and it's made more money in that time than Lightyear did in over 388 days. Elemental continues to bring in several million each day in just domestic and isn't dropping as rapidly as Lightyear did, which is a very good sign. I think good word of mouth has helped this film a bit. It's also doing incredibly well in South Korea compared to other foreign movie markets like China or any European country. I have high hopes this will continue to do well on streaming and physical copy sales. I for one will definitely pick up a Blu-ray/4k copy when I can. This movie is so pretty that you want the best quality version you can find to appreciate it.
