We no longer have a use for our cement silo at the main farm, so it was torn down and will be repurposed for another farm!

How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZfaq channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

I think it’s awesome that it is being rebuilt on a different farm. I think it’s better to give it new life and use instead of letting it waste away. It’s incredible how fast they got that torn apart and they system they used. Awesome video!

It is very sad to see the silo go, but they are recycling it, it would be cool to push it over but this way is better.

The silo that I have himoisture corn in was constructed from 2 silos that we had on another farm and it was put up in 2012.I wish I had a drone back then,I didn’t get any video of it going up.That was great to have recorded that.

Disagree, we have large population of both communities here, those folks are Amish, and the core, yes core differences are not so great. Even between horse/buggy and Horning Mennonites, core values are the same.

I'm so glad you found someone to reuse the silo. So many people just knock them down and scrap them. Thanks for recording the demolition and sharing it with us. Those sure a some hard working people!

I think this is one heck of a video. The fact that you saved it from demolition is so cool. I did not expect this result after the IG tease during the week. It would be interesting to see it again after reassembly. Nice work with the video, truly one of the more interesting in a long time.

What a great video. My uncle and I did this a few years ago. Took our neighbors silo down and put it up at our farm to replace our old wooden one. It was a lot of hard work. Also rebuilt the unloader out of parts from 3 local farms. Everyone was happy to see everything being put back in use.

That's really nice that they can rebuild it elsewhere rather than just trash it. Really nice video showing how to take down a cement silo.This is such a very awesome channel to watch. Ryan is such a great creator and editor of his videos. Thats topped off with excellent farming content that can be enjoyed by farmerx & nonfarmers alike imho. For myself I really enjoy seeing what goes on in farming through Ryan.Then hearing what all that is involved in farming through Travis.Just makes for a win win situation. The men did a great job of saving the staves, the rings, chute, filler pipe and all. Glad to see it will be repurposed. Nice video, Ryan.

Man when you said “take it down” I was expecting to see you knock it down like the videos you see online where guys chop it down like a tree by breaking out sections with a sledgehammer. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you took it all apart without destroying it. That’s a beautiful silo and it will probably serve someone else well someday. Great video Ryan

Great Video... It was really interesting to watch how they disassembled it... And you know that when it was erected on the farm it took a heck of a long time to do so with having to use some kind of Powered device to raise each concrete stave... Now your Dad should Buy a nice Pole Barn structure for storing Round Hay Bales primarily... Plus store equipment when the hay bales are gone, or perhaps if its built big enough it can do both... Thanx for doing what you do... Thanx for being a Farmer and... Thanx for sharing...

I can guarantee that if you gave it to them for free if something burns down on your farm an army will show up and rebuild it in a couple days no charge !

Looks a lot safer and a by far less dusty way of taking it down than driving the JCB into it. You should try and find some videos of Fred Dibnah and how he not only used to climb the old brick chimney stacks but how he used to bring them down without any explosives just holes wooden staves and a bonfire, he didn't have a fancy button but he had a couple of oily rags on a stick

@@jamiemiller6156 we used to watch his programs growing he was definitely one of a kind to sit on the top of a chimney over well over a 100ft with no harness on enjoying the view as he had his lunch after climbing up wooden ladders only lashed on with rope and wedges it was awe inspiring watching then and now

That was pretty awesome to watch. I wondered how that was done. I wanted to re-purpose a brown silo into a spiral stair/battlement for an English Tudor style home but didn't know if it was possible. Looks like it is. Thanks for the view and inspiration.

We are glad to see your silo will be put to good use and not just demolished. We recently had a smaller silo removed by demolition, it had survived a tornado but all the tension bands were loose and the safety of the unit was in question. In our area there was no known practical alternative to implosion by track hoe.

we have a lot of Amish were I live In Ohio and they use these old silos, we see them rebuild um all the time. Well done on letting them re-purpose this one!

I think the feed out system for the silos is really nice. We always had to shovel off a cart. I had never seen a feed out system like that. It seemed really nice being hands free basically. hopefully you can incorporate something like it in the new vision. I liked the idea of not so much shoveling lol

Ryan, I mentioned this a while back, but thought I'd remind you if you hadn't already planned on doing it. You and Travis should do a voiceover flyover of the farms and go through your 'plans' for the future. Building placement, pasture/field layout, crop/livestock areas, etc. Just to give the audience some anticipation of things that might come true one day. Could be an interesting video.

Thanks for the history lesson on the silo invention. Funny not knowing the history from the area you live in. Lived in McHenry county IL for 20 yrs an worked on a dairy farm in the late 80s early 90s as a young teenager. Thanks for the videos there great.

I'm glad to see the silo was repurposed. I have seen people make an old cement silos into a high top decks with a spiral staircase up inside to the top.

We had an old silo taken down in the exact same manner on my farm probably 45-50 years ago. I don't remember exactly when but I was a young boy at the time. I just removed the foundation a few years ago and there are still chunks of the broken staves around the farm.

My father Richard, RIP, bought a Hanson Silo from Lake Lillian MN., 60ft in the 70's and I watched those boys put of that stave silo in 3 days. The tornado in 1998 took it down in 2 minutes, along with 3/4 of Comfrey, MN..

My nephew recycled some staves by laying them out in an old barn yard and now uses the area for storage.

Ryan. I know those Amish so well. As soon as they get those pieces back to there house that silo will be built. They built me a 40-70 epuipment shed within 3 days

Those silo hoops make really great rebar if not needed for a silo re-erection! Thanks for the great video, Ryan! I never saw that way of a take down before! That single-pole scaffolding with the gantry crane too is quite ingenious, not to mention the sand on the ground! Those guys stacking the pallets are doing the very definition of back-breaking work! If you had a flatbed trailer, you could haul them for them with Big Red :)

Great video Ryan definitely refurbishing The Silo is a plus that's just great now it'll set on somebody else's farm that can use it definitely ask him if you can come check it out next summer so we can see what it looks like after he puts it back up if it looks just as good as it did on your farm I bet not great video y'all be safe

That was cool. I have seen a couple of silos built in the 80’s. Just the opposite way, had scaffolding like that but a 30 horse motor on the winch to pull the staves up. Must be a Madison silo by the looks of the staves. I took a video at the time on VHS Tape. No drone

We had our 2 Madison silos along with 2 others in our neighborhood taken down the same way. They rebuilt 2 bigger ones out of the 4 they took down. We are in NC Ohio. The guys on top whistled before they dropped each stave.

I actually was surprised they weren't wearing some harnesses. I'm in PA and the Amish have to wear them working in construction. I've seen them being used by some on barn raising situations.

We had a tornado come through and knock the top 40’ off 3 20X70 silos that were empty. Also it stripped the ladder and cage, the chute and roof off of two other larger silos that were full next to the others during the Super outbreak of April 27, 2011 here in Alabama. Hired probably the same crew out of Indiana to come get us back going. We built back a single 24X80 but had to go get staves from some better silos in the neighborhood because the remaining ones were in poor shape. Those guys didn’t use the scaffold inside when taking down. They just climbed around the top of the wall loosening the bands and dropping the staves as they went around. I made a couple “stirrups” to hang on the wall to give them a place to put a foot down, but they didn’t use them much. Amazing to see it done.

2:03 yup, the first farm silo was built in spring grove Illinois, one town over from me, The first one was actually made of wood and was unfortunately torn down quite a while ago, But the inventor used to build silos for people And in McHenry county you’ll commonly see concrete silos with concrete diamonds on top of them, that was his signature and that’s how you could tell he built it. There were usually also metal railings on top but not all the way around. Also sometimes people will take the diamonds off the top but you can still usually tell it was built by him just by the way it looks if you’ve seen a couple other diamond tops.

This is the first time I’ve seen this method of dismantling a silo. My grandpa had a silo built for him in about 1960 and the staves where solid concrete not honey combed like yours.

When I dug a silo base for a classmate, it was about 5 ft deep. It was about a 2 ft wide circle trench. Crawled down with a spade and made the bottom bell in and bell out. The silo company built a circle form about 10" above the ground and filled it with rerod and concrete so it was level.
