Hi Samuel, dead center is a solid part, care must be taken when using this center for it needs to be adjusted and lubricated occasionally as the work heats up and expand. while the revolving or live center usually contains anti friction bearings which allow the center to revolve with the work. no lubrication is required bet. the center and the workpiece, and the center tension is not affected by workpiece expansion during the cutting action.

if both dead and live centers are used for the workpiece to be held between centers, the dead center must be mounted on the headstock spindle with the lathe dog and the live center on the tailstock spindle.

live center may or may not be used in whatever turning operations including taper turning using compound rest method, there is no specific length of workpiece that requires the use of live center bec. its diameter is also a factor in determining the rigidity of the work, or we can make this as a rule, the length of the workpiece that requires the use of live center is more than twice the its diameter. but it is also good to say that your own judgement as a machinist must always be applied for a safer machining set up.
