I'd just like to add that the condition of the seals will determine your bearing life. If they get damaged every time by a little bit it's going to get gritty much faster than last time.

Totally, but if your servicing sealed bearings in general your simply trying to delay the inevitable. Run ‘em to the ground or service them because you want to tinker and get your hands dirty. A new chain on your bike will trump any bearing service/upgrade you do

How did you remove the bearings ?
@Chris-07032 жыл бұрын
Great video, thank you. Quick question: I did exactly as you’ve shown to my BB ceramic bearings. When I put the crank back on without dust covers or spacers it spins like magic. But as soon as I add those back (plus grease) the whole system has a ton of resistance. If the dust covers are rubbing up against the bearing while spinning and creating a ton of drag, what is the point of having a low-friction bearing?

So depending on what you mean by “a ton” - addding grease will stop the bearing from spinning in your hand but on the bike the crank should turn over easy - spacers? Are you running some sort of adapter between the bearing and the crank spindle (sometimes acts as a dust shield)? If yours has warped it can rub against something stationary in the bb and cause resistance. Use sandpaper to modify the shape. - if you are using spacers with something like a sram crank you’ll need to be careful you’re getting proper crank bolt tension without over compressing the bb bearing. Try removing a spacer

Can’t I not spray degreaser & grease w.o. removing the bearings? Clean them twice a season so removal doesn’t make sense.

Is that ceramicspeed bearing still working well? What do you think about doing the service without removing from the bike, just open, remove the protection and do the job of cleaning and regresease ?
@wrenchfriday2 жыл бұрын
This bearing is still rolling as smooth as ever- it’s on a bike that doesn’t see much use these days. If you leave the bearings in the frame you will likely only be able to remove one of the two seals and that will prevent you from properly cleaning out the bearing. In that situation I would simply wipe down the crank spindle and wipe clean the bearings and put some fresh grease on the surfaces to do a mini refresh.

'it doesn;t matter if you start removing the seal on the inside or outside'.. on a wheel the axle is stationary, on a bb the axle is rotating so how do you think they design the seals to contact the races on a wheel vs bb bearing? :} * the bearings on a bike experience negligible loads and rpms as far as bearings are concerned.. what's the life expectancy of a wheel bearing on a 600lbs motorcycle under normal use? a Lot of miles, like circling this planet a few times :}

Ceramic speed has their own bearing grease specifically for sealed bearings

How often is this recommended?

Depends on the seal condition, but I would say listen to the bearing and service it anytime it sounds dry or feels gritty

For 11 euros I buy me a new bearing. That’s a no brainer man. Too much time and energy this maintenance. Of course when you gets loads of satisfaction fixing it, do your thing.
@wrenchfriday3 жыл бұрын
Totally- but this is a $200 bearing that’s intended to be serviced and outlast a standard bearing. A true ceramic bearing costs 4x the cost because it’s supposed to last 4x as long (with service). If this was a regular steel bearing I probably wouldn’t bother servicing it either
@dennistate99512 жыл бұрын
@@wrenchfriday I was about to say that there is no way your getting a Ceramic Speed Bearing for 11 Dollars,Pounds or Euros

I stay away from greasing my bearings. I use a dry graphite lubricant. Grease just eventually gunks up and captures more dirt. If you noticed before you put the grease in, the bearing was moving more freely, that's what dry graphite offers, but less mess.
