The UW Milwaukee has the original commercial with its jingle. I was doing my research on this and found it there. I made contact. They said that I could come in to view the commercial. But couldn't obtain a copy of it. I never followed thru. But I loved the jingle.

Arnold Stang, along with Marvin Kaplan, were the gas station attendants in the comedy epic "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World." Both were also voices on Top Cat.

Maybe they should have put Touché Turtle on the box... Back in the 60s, they had Yogi Bear, Snagglepuss, and Quick Draw McGraw on Kellogg's boxes.

The design of the masked Shelly The Turtle character looks like a cross between Darkwing Duck and Iago The Parrot from Disney's "Aladdin" . I feel like Arnold Stag's voice doesn't fit that masked Shelly The Turtle very well. I expected him to have a voice simular to Zorro's voice, more smooth and with an accent.

The earliest commercial for Corny Snaps was the other way around, in that Shelly, already with the Durante personality, was trying to coax everyone to come out of THEIR shells (get out of bed) and have Corny Snaps for breakfast. When he mentioned the cereal everyone else would say "Did someone say Corny Snaps?".. In the same commercial he'd suddenly stop playing his piano and say "I wanna hear it for Corny Snaps"; everyone would be crunching on the cereal, and Shelly would say "Dat's music to my ears!".. The next set of commercials were what you described- Shelly sleeping until someone else mentions Corny Snaps, at which point he would jerk awake saying (again in Durante fashion) "DID someone say Corny SNAPS??"

I remember Shelly's original commercials. I like him because I'm a sucker for Jimmy Durante type characters, like Hanna-Barbera's Doggie Daddy. The cereal was pretty good, too.

"The town of Durango.." ..🤔 hmm, being that this was an American cereal/commercial, and there are only 3 towns in America named Durango, my guess is the commercial represented Durango, Texas⭐🇺🇸. Especially based on the Spanish Tile pitched roofing of the buildings.

I lived in Durango, Colorado, for a couple of years as a kid-1980-1982-exactly one year after this cereal was discontinued. I didn’t see any residual “S” markings on posters there, so I’d bet you’re right.
