A topic suggestion for the coming decades: Herge and his stories of Tintin. Herge has bit of a character arc, going from stereotypical and problematic representations of culture, and eventually becoming somewhat jaded but more worldly towards the end. I think Herge gets good roughly around "Cigars of the Pharoah", but perhaps Strange Brain Parts has a different perspective on it all.
@polaris_draws
@polaris_draws Жыл бұрын
Cigars is where the good solo Tintin stories start, but I don't think Tintin really starts getting good until Crab with Golden Claws. Having Captain Haddock's alchaholism and temper to bounce off Tintin's straightforward goodness adds a much needed character dimension to the stories. A video charting Herge's relationship with other cultures would be interesting, because you do see the change from the early books to the last ones. I wouldn't say he ever became great at it, but he did defiantly improve as time went on.

Besides the comic tropes video you are the main reason why I got into cerebus and it's creator Dave sim. I have never read a series such as cerebus. From humble beginnings as a sword and sorcery parody to a phenomenal series that satirizes politics and religion to a sad reflective of Dave sims life and beliefs. It was one rollercoaster of a read. And honestly I don't regret it. I will always cherish my experience and your videos on this underappreciated series, heck of all your videos not just the cerebus ones. Thank you for everything. Keep doing what you're doing.

Such thoughtful, incisive, and well-realised breakdowns. Thanks for all your hard work to date, it's much appreciated. Please delve more into Cerebus, particularly episodes on Church & State (either/both parts), Jaka's Story, Mothers & Daughters ('Flight', 'Women' & 'Minds'), & Guys...mostly because I'm struggling to find physical copies, and it's taking a while to read them online!

Thank you for your kind words! Church and State is already written and will be done soon-ish. There’s at least one more video I want to do before I tackle that one. Jaka’s Story is in note form (I’ll probably add Melmoth to it because it’s not really worth its own video). Hopefully, I will cover it in-depth up to issue 200, which is where I always recommend people stop reading.

I love love LOVE all of your videos on Cerebus. I read the first 1/3 of Cerebus a few months ago and loved High Society the most out of everything. Are you planning to cover the Church and State arc and anything afterwards? Question for you also... have you seen Kid Leaves Stoop's recent "Spongeboy Mop" video where it actually does an abridged reading of Cerebus #104? I watched it last night and less than 24 hours later I see this video... very cool timing. Interesting seeing Cerebus being mentioned in the same breath as SpongeBob of all things. Great video as always. Keep up the good work.

I'm not sure where you get that the albatross was made of gold. The detail on it looks like a porcelain statue. The McGrews say they found a worthless duck statue in the boat. If it was gold, they would mnt have said that. When Cerebus throws it into the street, it shatters, which gold wouldn't do. I never thought it was anything other than some kind of ceramic.
@StrangeBrainParts
@StrangeBrainParts Жыл бұрын
I'm going on memory, but I believe at some point it's mentioned that the albatross is golden in a completely unrelated conversation. I want to say it was a throwaway line about the golden albatross uniting the Western and Eastern Church. Or, possibly, I read an interview where Mr. Sim says it's golden? Fair point, though.

I know an animated feature that was done recently. I think. I've only seen a few clips, but it was supposedly released? It has a really long title that I just can't recall at this moment. But, no...I don't think there will be a series or movie done by any studio at any time. The ensuing backlash would be too great.

As much flack as Cerebus gets throughout its whole run it is one of the best examinations of toxic masculinity in comics. Watching Cerebus slowly realize how ineffectual his gruff demninor and fighting skills are in this new high society and then having it all conclude with his petty tantrum with Aristoria at the end provides an interesting contrast to Cerebus as the petty Tyrant in the first half of church and state. This all comes to a head in Minds where the whole hero narrative of Mothers and Daughters is completly deconstructed. Though I'm in the minority who quite enjoys the latter half of Cerebus (with the exception of the dull and tonally jarring Latter Days Arc). Its here where we really start to see Dave's greatest (and worst) innovation which is using text forms outside of the standard comic form (line by line dialog, in universe texts, ect) which allowed for far more content and textual depth then most comics but would also devolve into the infamous Torah analysis.
