Composite EXR Passes with Z Depth in After Effects

Learn how to composite Open EXR Passes with Z Depth from Maya and V-Ray in After Effects in order to create a spaceship flying through fog. The plate and passes we are using are available below. This includes the beauty pass, global illumination (GI), lighting, specular, reflection, self-illumination, ambient occlusion, and z-depth. Use the Set Matte effect to use the z depth pass to create a sense of atmospheric perspective. Along the way, we'll be using a reference to help guide our color correction.

May be you can use a precomp for the whole beauty rebuild and then add the zdepth on top with color correction. Same goes for the camera lens blur effect, can put it on top of the beauty rebuild precomp.

In some cases that is fine. The issue is that precomps have only one blending mode but may contain several layers with different blending modes. Depending on what you want to do, this can be a problem. So, in my opinion, leaving all the layers inside the main comp and using expressions to link them together is the best practice since it's more flexible and you're less likely to run into issues.

Hi, sorry for the late response! You don't actually composite them. They're required for making a denoised beauty pass and using the standalone denoiser app after rendering. To denoise individual passes, go to the Render Elements tab of Render Settings, select the render pass, and check Denoise in the Attribute Editor

You don't composite with the Denoiser pass. It is there to use with the V-Ray Denoiser Tool. If you want the denoising to be applied directly on the AOVs, then simply select each pass in the Render Elements window, and then enable denoising in the Attribute Editor (Maya). By default, denoising will only be applied to the beauty if you don't do this. For 3ds max, you can enable denoising on each pass in the pass parameters tab at the bottom of the Render Elements window.
