Queen's Escape, Château de La Tuilerie

Жыл бұрын

Here's a tour of the Queen's Escape grounds. We've walked the land where we walk the most to give you a little perspective on where we are when we're showing you around. Bo takes you across the yard and up to the cliffs then down for a tour of the outbuilding and Orangery. We hope you enjoy!
-------------------
Learn more about our château, nicknamed, 'Queen's Escape and book a night in our bed & breakfast or start planning your wedding or event: chateaudelatuilerie.com/
Subscribe to our KZfaq channel: @Queen's Escape
Queen's Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We've named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
With it's sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

Lovely weather. Do have the water checked in the well. Never plant bamboo. It 'runs' everywhere. They are an absolute pain. Your idea of creating a park is excellent. Beautiful quality trees will be required.. You will be very busy for a long time to come. You will enjoy it. Good luck. Thank you for showing us.

Thank you Sylvia. We have not yet had the opportunity or time to check the water in the wells. We hope it’s there, and that we can use it. Yes, the bamboo is an issue, and yes, this place will keep us busy for years to come. But we love it here. Bo

Yet another warning on the bamboo. The Biltmore Estate in North Carolina has it spread all around their small creeks on the estate. I hope you choose other plants for the other area you intended to plant them.

WOW, that was an amazing walking tour! I can see why you fell in love with this chateau! The overlook is lovely and a sweet little cabin would be ideal! The chicken coop/piggery is charming! Get a tarp over that roof so it will stop deteriorating until you can get it repaired properly. The Orangery is stunning and that fireplace, stunning! I can see wedding receptions there! I think that if u take a stick of bamboo and put it into the ground for an arc, you will very soon have another grove of invasive bamboo. It might grow roots snd runners. I made a tiki bar for a fun party. But no sticking in ground.

There is an English tree surgeon called Nick that Stephanie uses at La Lande. He also mulches and cuts the trunks for use as wood planks if you need that. He appears to be very competent as I observe. I have had quite a few large trees removed here in Australia so have some knowledge as an astute observer.

Corzon-sur-Vauvre and Martel are over three and a half hours driving distance apart. It is over 260 kilometres from laLande to Château de la Tuilerie. I am sure Bo can find a tree surgeon closer to his own château rather than resorting to borrowing contractors from distant lalande.

Fantastic video it really gave a great feel for the whole property. It is so beautiful, fabulous views and in a lovely part of the Dordogne. There are so many opportunities. With those views it would be a wonderful spot for painting holidays. The plateau is a great asset with many view points. If you built a little cabin it would be nice to offer sunset drinks, leading guests up via various view points and arriving at the cabin where you could have tables and serve drinks and nibbles as guests watch the sunset. I am sure you will make a success of this venture as you have a beautiful property in a wonderful setting in a great location and seem to have plenty of imagination to create something special. Look forward to following your journey and hopefully coming to visit sometime.

I know this may sound super crazy BUT…. I would put a hot tub/tubs in the building cut into the cliffs. I could imagine it being so cozy in the winter because the hot tub would help the building heat up and the summer the hot tubs heat turned off and the cliffs making it cool from the heat. I would set up a grill/fire pit close to the outside door and some tables and chairs. Open up the intro area and this could be a great little indoor/outdoor space that would be unique. It just needs a tiny clean up first 😉

Bamboo is extremely fast in growing but is also very useful. By splitting the trunks, you can bend, split, weave, cut into spikes, etc. This to make spikes for fencing, bend and split the bark itself to weave baskets or make lengths of split bark for a basket weave fence of any height. This might be a savings instead of a chore. I've been watching another vlogger (Primitive Skills) who has a vast bamboo forest to use for his different projects. Fencing, gardening, baskets, fishing, etc. Each time I watch, I learn something new. Bamboo is also a fiber that is spun for yarn. You might be able to sell parts of it to such manufacturers, like wool from sheep. These are just a few ideas.

Bonjour once more! A maze would be a wonderful addition to your property. In Asia I have seen them laid out using creeping bamboo and with regular upkeep, they can look spectacular and fast growing. You could incorporate Bo's idea of the bamboo lined walkway into a maze with overhanging tunnels, twists, turns, dead ends, and a secluded seating area in the centre. In your 'park' area, I hope you will incorporate a herb garden for cooking and physic herb garden for medicinals of interest. Most historical châteaux would have had both. Perhaps when your garden park come to fruition, general day visitors might be permitted to explore. This would bring in extra revenue. Children would love the unique bamboo maze experience, with the Orangery used for afternoon teas. I hope you will also plan for your own vegetable garden and wildflower meadows, both of which can be utilised in your wedding preparations. You made no mention of a swimming pool, but I am sure you have eventual plans for one. Bonne nuit, dors bien from the Secret Château in Normandie. X

what a wonderful walk around. Such an interesting tour. I imagine it must feel lovely living in such an expansive place. I remember when we first moved down from Newcastle NSW to Tasmania, our 6 acres felt enormous after our 700 square meters suburban block! Now, I feel like I could live on 100 acres quite easily. I must say that it looks like Australia in the middle of summer with how brown and dry everything is, instead of the beginning of spring!

It would be traditional to have a circular water fountain as I’ve seen many chateau formal gardens feature. Yes, I agree with the other comment I’ve seen too many chateau owners battle bamboo. I would use another type of small floral tree to line the park walkways.Nowadays ,people even have smaller, lilac or hydrangeas formed into trees.

Check out Beau Chateaus vlog. They’re uncovering a formal garden and you can see where the pathways once were. They discovered a circular fountain feature in the middle of the gardens and they uncovered a terrace area.

It would be something to think about putting a single washroom if you’re using the orangery as a wedding venue. Maybe the cute cellar could be used for wine cellar.

Thank you Bo and Karen, for the amazing tour of your beautiful property!! I do have a few suggestions for a few things 1. I absolutely love what you have done with putting in a walking path, I think more of your guest would be tempted to use the walking path if there where well placed benches along the path. The reason for this suggestion; I suffer from two debilitating autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosis spondylitis) as well as fibromyalgia and a handful of other stuff, if I were to be able to travel to France and spend time in your chateau, I would never be able to take advantage of the walking path without making quite a few stops along the way to rest. I’m sure there are others who would be in the same situation with other medical issues. 2. The place on the bluff is a stunning view, I can just imagine setting there with some fresh fruit, summer sausage, cheese and a nice bottle of wine (or in my case, a can of Pepsi or a cold bottle of water! LOL), maybe sometime in the future, you can offer such a package for an additional cost. 3. That large space, I believe it is above the barn, would be an awesome space for a gym/workout place that could possibly be a continuous source of income if you charge a small admittance fee each time someone from the town wants to use the gym to work out. 4. I noticed the difference of the wood in the Orangery immediately!! It looks amazing!! Unfortunately, I think for you to get restrooms in there, without taking up any valuable space from either room, you may have to put restrooms behind the Orangery or you may have to actually build a building for them off to the side. I also think you would do best with 3 or 4 stalls for both the men and women, just to insure there are enough spaces to accommodate a large group. 5. It’s too bad the chicken house is in such bad shape, it would make an adorable little cottage! 6. No matter what your final decisions are for your castle, I know it’s going to be spectacular!! 7. Have fun and enjoy!! Thank you both for allowing us, all, to live vicariously through you and your journey’s. Brightest Blessings.

Hello again, 1. Benches along the walking pathway is a good idea. Thank you for suggesting that. 2. We do sell refreshments here, that you could bring in a basket. 3. Yes, you’re right. In fact we have discussed such ideas already. Karen is collecting items for a gym. 4. The idea is to get permission by the authorities to build an external building that would house such facilities. 5. We intend to fix it up in the future. Thank you very much. We certainly hope that it will be a place people will find spectacular when they come here, including you. All the best. Bo

Thank you for including the map shots shown throughout your stroll indicating exactly where you are as you traversed your handsome grounds. When you commenced the tour, I was surpised that such a grand chateau had such an UN-grand main entrance, which was explained when your toured us past the orginal driveway, now hidden behind that building? Although the wall surrounding the property is random fiedstone, the lighter coloured stone piers that originally held the gates are of fine cut of stone blocks with handsome plinths and caps, likely crafted by the stonecutters, lwhile building the chateau itself. Since they are barely visible, nor of any use in their original location, but appear to be in fine condition, had it occurred to you to relocate them to to your current main entrance? This would be quite easy to accomplissh, as they are basically stacked fitted pieces, and would only require two poured cement bases at their new location? You might also add an electrical cable down the drive allowing lanterns to be added, and/or to illuminate the signage, to better welcome guests arriving after dusk. It would be interesting to source some original surveys or old photos of your property, as I have the further suspicion that, where those old gate posrs are now, is NOT where they were originally erected nor ever intended to be? There is something incongruous in how those fine cut stone piers appear to have been "stuck into" that rough fieldstone wall of a different style & time? In view of the elaborate detail seen in the chateau's construction, there should also have been flanking walls in at least the same matching stone,, or at least the feidstone walls would have been stuccoed for a finer finish? In view of that I would further conjecture that someone has already done what I am suggesting to you? And that they were moved to where they now stand, for a more likely utilitarian purpose of supporting the large"missing iron gates, which, as evidenced by that huge remaining forged iron hook, would require piers of that mass to support them? If this idea is at all of interest to you, might I suggest as a point of reference, another recent chateau video channel on this exact topic: On a "How to renovate a Chateau" episode from one month ago, entitled: "Building New Gates for our French Chateau"" owners Phillip & Anna (also missing THEIR own driveway entry-portes completely!) design, source & then record the construction of new ones with piers quite similar to yours, along with the short missing flankin wing walls i alluded to? (In their episode immediately prior to the one noted above, they show how/where they researched the design. There are also 3 or 4 other commensurate projects on other Chateau channels which are both relocating existing gates as well as brand new construction. You are fortunate as you appear to have two complete piers in fine condition that only need a new base and a skilled mason. Returning to your old entrance drive, that handsome cross atop the stone base (which you did not mention anything about?) is typical of those seen at crossroads thoughout France and all over Europe, As yours, which along with you old driveway, appears almost "marooned" in a now seldom used isolated area, but with the other lanes & roadways leading away from it. it seems as if there was some major realignment or closure of the surrounding roadway network which is also the reason why YOUR driveway is where it is now, and would explain the abandoned appearance of what must have been at one time a much busier intersection? I apologize for what I had intended as merely a brief comment, has morphed into an...essay? I hope I have not bored you senseless! lol I very much enjoy your videos and look forward to more of them. Especially more of your wonderfully "annotated" property tours (where you masterfully explain EXACTLY where you are, & thus the perspective from where WE are viewing it , WITHOUT the use of (or need for!) ANY aerial drone footage!!) LOL Perhaps you could be persuaded to tour a few "other" Chateaus where even after watching lots of their vids, its still a mystery guessing WHERE on the property or even within their manse they might be!?

Hello Alec, thank you very much for your kind words on our video. Karen did mention the idea of making a more flashy entrance with gates on the current driveway. Stone piers of course. The driveway we use today was made in 1935. Before that, the old driveway was in use, and you can imagine how the horses and carriages were coming in and out of here. So the reason the stone piers are located where they are, is because that’s where the gate to the property was for many many years. No one moved them, they are in their original position. The Tobacco leaf barn and all the bamboo came later in time. From history we learned, that this property which now has 15,5 hectares of land, used to have 115 hectares. Back in the day, land was sold off because the owners could not afford the upkeep. This happened to so many chateaus in France. So you can imagine how what we see today, looked so different a long time ago. The cross outside the old gate is a catholic cross. We don’t know much about it, which is why I didn’t mention it. There’s another big one over at the Belvedere Copeyre viewpoint, which we also showed you in this video. These crosses are not spread out all over Europe. They are only spread out over the southern part of Europe, because that’s more catholic. Up north we don’t have such things standing around. All the best. Bo

Hello, we would love to have a swimming pool in the future. The reason I didn’t mention it, is because we don’t know enough about it right now, to say whether it will happen or not. But it is certainly on the wishlist. We do have two bikes ready for guests. I just finished fixing them up yesterday. I think that will be in the next video. Kayaking is allowed on the river. In fact there are two locations right down here close to us, where they rent out for 1-3 days, depending on how long you want to go down the river. They set up tents, and they organize transport back to the starting point. Bo

That old hay would be good for mulch on your garden beds. There are non invasive types of bamboo available so I have heard. I think anything invasive (including ivy) is a case of enjoy now regret later. Imagine having to employ someone to control it, when you no longer can or are just too busy. You could consider native plantings/trees to survive hard times for the distant areas from the castle for ease of maintenance. In the end, your decision of course. Great tour, best wishes.
