chainsaw kickbacks can have life changing results. I demonstrate why short bars can be more dangerous than long bars , and ways to operate a short bar so as to minimize the obvious dangers of a chainsaw with a short bar

As someone who is currently recovering from a kickback, I can't stress the importance of chaps enough. I severed my quad tendon and it has cost me 3 months of work so far. A Stihl MS311 kicked off a root on the backside of a stump and crammed itself into my leg. If I had been wearing chaps, I wouldn't have needed more than a band-aid. Not wearing chaps cost me dearly as I needed close to 50 stitches and 30 staples. Y'all wear your chaps EVERY SINGLE CUT!

when I bought my chainsaw the salesman told me "he would not start any chainsaw without chaps" the chaps are designed to instantly stop the chain. When I was at my moms house cutting limbs in her Pine Trees - not sure what happened, lost balance stepped in a hole whatever, the chain hit my chaps & instantly stopped when filled with string of the chaps. I just refilled the chaps & my wife sewed a patch on as a reminder of what could happen

when I'm cutting, I keep an eye on my saw dust coming off the chain. When I'm cutting "dirty" wood, I'll file up the chain, but not my rakers. I'm getting about three sharpening s before I do the rakers. If I see small, short chunks of wood, I stop and file my rakers down MAKING A squealing SOUND as I file! NOT any more! I'll be filing at an angle from now on. Great learning from a veteran woodsman.

I only use the dogs in these cases: -Felling, since gravity does not help me cutting. (the powerunits mass cant force the chain into the wood) -Bucking, only when the Bar is horizontal (the manufacturer made the chainsaw so that is balanced to stay horizontal (of course if you have a long or heavy bar the mass distribution is slightly more in front)). If you want to saw into a laying log and you put the chainsaw on the log (so the chainsaw stays horizontal) the chainsaw+bar want to gravitate towards earth, but since the manufacturer made the saw so it is balances to stay horizontal the chain will just cut with lightly (you have to imagine: half of the mass is on the bar which lays on the log and half on the powerunit), if you put pressure on the chainsaw to move it vertical downwards you are stressing yourself unneccessarily. -On cuts in awkward positions where i cant position myself so that the powerhead is higher than the bar (bar is facing down). The reason is, that the gravity does the pressing for me. Hopefully you understand my bad english If i can give you a tip (i know you do this for long, indont want to sound rude) but you should try to keep the powersaw closer to your body(so your left arm is extended) at times when you are bucking, this way leverarm is shorter and you are tiring slower (this way). Have a nice day!

It has always been a very private relationship but the confidence and power, I have always used that to help and protect other people. I just gave thanks afterward and walked away. The peoples joy was all the payment I ever needed. Peace, Love, Contentment and True Faith for you my Brother. That bit of fresh air moves around you when your tired that brings back your energy. I know the presence Billy's talking about. Albert Hoffman rediscovered it for the first time since his childhood when he delved into LSD. You’ve said it before and it makes a lot of sense. People think a shorter bar is safer for some reason and honestly I feel less comfortable with a short bar for a lot of reasons. The benefits of a long bar are pretty impressive. The balance is so much nicer when you’re running that saw for an extended period of time. Love to you and the family❤️
@iffykidmn81703 жыл бұрын
There is also the balance of trade offs, Longer bar longer chain=$, Longer chain= longer time spent sharpening, longer chain= more stretch, longer chain also creates more drag reducing chain speed. Longer is not always better extreme example try hanging a 60" bar on a 50cc and see how that works out or the other extreme would be a 16" bar on something like a 660 or 880 or even a 60"bar on a 880 for a limbing saw. Another consideration is the operator 5-6" or 6-6".
