Chainsaw motor on a go kart - no torque but lots of top end

The "A La Carte" gets a chainsaw motor. I had no idea what would happen when I got on it, I didn't expect much because the motor was small. It has an oversized carb, a ported muffler and no governor so I knew it would rev high... if it moved at all.

It took a little imagination to get the motor attached and a sprocket on it. A bicycle is a lot lighter, so it should work out pretty well. Let me know how it goes!

Me and the sawmill boys got into this deal about 4 thousand years ago while we were still in reform school together. Where the go-cart came from or what kind of saw motor we used I have no idea. Their dad, the logger/sawyer was running Homelites, a 700?, a 770 and a 990-D for a yard saw but i doubt it was one of them. Had mower tires to run on and a v-belt drive about 1 to 1 to the axle. I do remember it was after dark when we got it together and the 1st time we gassed it the tire came apart and flew through the air with the greatest of ease out of sight and the old shop being right by the highway, we were glad there was no traffic. That was the last of that deal till the logger/sawyer made the buggy out of the old walking tractor but that's for another time.

The v belt means it had a torque converter. I tried to run a small tweaked chainsaw motor on a light cart with a clutch, and it briefly worked before the motor came apart

ive got a wacker cutoff saw, a bts1035 i think. its 73cc, 5.5hp, 3.7 ft lbs, red line is 9300. its got an awful restrictive air filter designed to trap dust, and a crappy exhaust, so i think it could get up to 7hp with a pod filter and a free flowing exhaust, or expansion chamber.

Mine was too small, but it was done just for fun, I knew it was gonna blow up when I built it, but it sounded fun. How many cc's is your motor? The bigger the better because it's about torque more than horsepower.

@@GuysPlayingWithTools i think 58 but may be a 49cc one just found it yesterday but i dont know how to do the Sprocket because it dosent have one i guess it jumps from the cluch u think using a stock chain but removing the cuting part is ok? btw i got bike sprocket for the shaft
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools 7 ай бұрын
@user-er5wz4su7q Attaching it is the hard part. The chainsaw chain isn't nearly strong enough. It would stretch and break within a minute. I think it was this video, or one right before or after where I had the same problem(s). I decided to pull the chainsaw clutch off and weld a sprocket to it. Chains come in a lot of sizes, bikes are *usually* 35, and go karts are usually 41. You need to make sure you have all matching parts before you start cutting and welding. Attaching the saw to the kart was also a lot of welding and bolting and using my imagination. Lol If the saw is in good shape and is running OK, I have to ask.... why not sell the saw and use the money on a bigger engine? The HF 212 is a pretty great little kart motor, and you can get them on sale for $150 and it's gonna be 5x faster and out accelerate (and be more reliable) than any chainsaw motor. If you prep them both for racing, the 212 will still win by a mile.
