Ok, a lot to let you in on here.... This is from the December 2013 concert celebrating Suzuka's 16th birthday. She was born December 20th, 1997 hence the concerts name "Legend 1997". Earlier in the year there was also a "Legend 1999" concert celebrating Yui's and Moa's birthdays. In both the 1999 and 1997 concerts each girl got to perform a solo song (all covers) of popular songs that had the word 'LOVE' in its title from their birth year..."Chokotto Love" for Yui, "Love Machine" for Moa and "White Love" for Suzuka". The song title, "Babymetal Death" is a big play on words. First, The word "Babymetal" is spelled exactly the same as "Heavy Metal" in Japanese script except for one little mark at the beginning of the word. Second, "Death" is not actually said during the song. Instead, they are actually saying "Desu" with the "U" being silent and so it is said kind of like "Dess" but with the tongue forward between the teeth resulting in a word sounding very similar to our western word "Death. "Desu" basically means "I am" or "We are". Therefore, they are not actually saying "Babymetal Death" but rather "Babymetal Desu" or "I am Sumetal", " I am Yuimetal, "I am Moametal", "We are Babymetal". Fun huh!?! Also, Babymetal pays homage to 'Metallica' several time throughout this performance. The opening riff is straight from Metallica's ""One" and the collapsing statue at the end very closely mimics the destruction of the Lady Liberty statue in Metallica's "And Justice for All" tour. The neck brace is, of corse, homage to Yoshiki, drummer for X-Japan, who use to headbang so violently while drumming that he hurt his neck and was orded to wear the neck brace and that is why you saw it first in the Babymetal song "Headbanger". Now, the crucifixion. Keep in mind that Japan is a monoculteral society with its primary religions being Shinto and Buddhism. The Christian Cross has no religious connotation to them but they are aware of its meaning. Likewise, they are also aware of its usage throughout the history of Rock and Metal and so that is how it was used here. In both Shinto and Buddhism is the prevailing belief in reincarnation so the crucifixion of our Metal Queen Sumetal, allowed her to be reborn as our Metal Goddess!! You wanted it explained and while not every detail has been covered, hope this helps a bit. Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!

@watcher2554 I'm going to slightly disagree. They are definitely saying "Death" repeatedly during this song. It's in the title, and the official lyrics. Of course this is a play on the word "desu", like you suggested.

Well technically it is both because most Japanese people can’t produce the “th” sound. So they are saying the word “death” but pronouncing it as “des”

All the explanations have been given already, I'll just say the moment a 16 year old celebrates her birthday by being crucified by her 14 year old friends while thousands of people shout "Death Death Death" is when we all realise these three Japanese girls are more 'METAL' than any of us will ever be. #notacult They only crucify Su on special occasions.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 Here's a translation of the introduction: "The Second Impact. It was in the winter of 1997. It was the birth of a new warrioress who transcends the law of nature, "SU-METAL". Charged with the mission of the Metal Resistance, in exchange for her own life, she waged a battle in the legendary "special night of fifteen". Executing the Metal Resistance in many music festivals in 2013, SU-METAL made the legends one after another. Before the birth of a new goddess, she returned beside the holy mother. The holy mother said, "A soul is repeated. Return to me, tracing your memory…"

I don't think that is the correct translation, Rick. They may say this somewhere in the DVD but this is what they say right before Babymetal Death "Legend 1997. (referring to the year of Su's birth) It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal, she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess. The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time. The apocalypse is prophesied DOOMSDAY comes There remains... little time.." I changed it slightly to sound more like how a native English speaker would say it rather than just the literal translation.

Again you are desperately searching for words... Love it! Let me explain the whole thing as short as possible: The show "Legend 1997 SU-METAL Seitansei" ("Legend 1997 SU-METAL Holy Birthday") not only was the 16th birthday celebration show for Suzuka Nakamoto. It also marked the transition of BABYMETAL from a mere side-project of Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom Academy) to a band in its own right. And this was done with a lot of symbolism. For instance, the show kicked off with a special dubstep remix-version of "Headbanger!" with Suzuka very obviously lipsyncing to symbolize the pop-idol she was before. "BABYMETAL DEATH" on the contrary, ended the show including the crucifixion of the former idol Suzuka Nakamoto and her rebirth as the metal goddess SU-METAL while incorporating real musicians playing the music. The song itself normally served as an introduction at their gigs. It's basically a pun (death/desu which sounds similar spoken by Japanese). "Desu" means "to be" so "BABYMETAL desu" means "we are BABYMETAL", etc.
@autohmae
@autohmae 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting interpretation, but this wasn't the show where they left Sakura Gakuin, it was 'just' Su-metal's 16th birthday, but clearly that was also an important moment that needed to be show she went into a new phase in life.

@@autohmae I never claimed they have left SG with this show. My statement was that the show symbolizes their parting from SG. At the time they actually left, there was no show to celebrate this event. They didn't even knew it before to be able to stage such an event right in time. Remember there was, for instance, a YUIMETAL coming of age show (Legend Y) planned 7/8 months after she actually left BABYMETAL. This should give you a slight idea of how far in advance they have to plan things...

"B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L I am Su-Metal. I am YuiMetal. I am MoaMetal. We are BABYMETAL!" Hi BJ! Good reaction! "BABYMETAL Death!" was usually played as their show opener to introduce the band. It hasn't been played since Yui left the group. "Death" when spoken by a native Japanese speaker sounds like "desu" which means "is/am/are", so the whole song is a play on words. Here it was played as their show closer. Su was born in 1997, and "Legend 1997" was her 16th birthday show. Here she is called back by the gods and sacrificed to be reborn as a metal goddess. There's a lot of homages to Metallica not only in "BABYMETAL Death!" the song but also this stage show. The machine gun guitars in the beginning are like the song "One", and the Mother Mary statue is like the "And Justice for All" Lady Justice statue. The neck brace is a nod to X Japan's drummer who had to wear a neck brace from headbanging too hard.

EXPLANATION FOLLOWS: Hey! Great to see you're back reacting to Babymetal! What a great choice of song - Death! Just when you thought you had no more WTF? moments left to experience! 1997 was Su's birth year and this was on her 16th birthday - what a way to spend your 16th: being crucified on stage while 20,000 people chant 'Death!' and a statue of the virgin mary crumbles behind you! Every girl's dream! It all signifies her transition from one age to another/one state of being to another/going from mortal to Goddess. The lyrics are simple - they spell out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L and then shout out what sounds like 'Death' but is the Japanese form of 'to be', or I/You/They are' - Desu. So, the lyrics are "I am Babymetal" and, er, that's it. Babymetal often like to play on Japanese words that sound like something in English. As the word Desu has a silent 'u' and the 's' is spoken with the tongue between the teeth, it sounds like 'Death'. And that's that explained! PS I have been putting up one song a week from the ($499!) 6 DVD boxed set of their 2017 Fox Five Festivals but on Vimeo, as they're not restricting me from doing so, as YT did. Here's a link to the very HQ audio and crisp HD visuals songs - this is YAVA but there's 2 more on there and more to come: Enjoy! vimeo.com/395131094 I saw them live 2 weeks ago in Wales, UK - just in time, as all their Japan, Thailand and Taipei gigs have been cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions. At least they'll get a little rest for once!

Oh so there is a slang word in Tokyo region that sounds exactly like “Death” but it is pronounced similar to “Desshed” so the word they are actually saying is slang for “Whats up I’m (insert name) so English people hear Death but Japanese hear what’s up I’m Su metal, what’s up I’m Yui metal and What’s up I’m Moa metal. It is a regional slang just in Tokyo. They actually have a bunch of songs where they do similar and even Babymetal word is spelt in Japanese as “HeavyMetal” with just a few accents over the characters. So the name is a Pun.

Okay.. gotta fill you in on a lot here. First with the song. It's a play on words. As someone mentioned before, the -th sound doesn't exist in Japanese, as you probably already know. So they really aren't saying "Death". the closest they have to the pronunciation of "death" is "des", but they already have a word "desu", which is the verb "to be" in English, or more importantly, "I am". They had to be taught to hold their tongue in their teeth and say "desu" to get the -th sound to say "death". So all they are saying in the song is they are spelling the name of the band, and then saying "Su-metal Desu" (I am Su-Metal), Yui-Metal desu (I am Yui-Metal), Moa-Metal desu (I am Moa-Metal), BABYMETAL desu (we are BabyMetal). That's all that they lyrics are saying. It's a very cute, kawaii play on words that to the English speaking world, sounds like they are screaming "death". For the music, it's an homage to Metallica in more than one way. The guitar riff you hear at the beginning, is basically the same riff you hear in the heavy section of the song "One", by Metallica, off their "...And Justice For All" album. When Metallica was touring for that album (it came out in 1988), one of the things that they had on stage was a statue of Lady Justice. And at the end of the show, the head fell off of her. Same happened here. The neck brace is a tribute to the drummer for the band X Japan. He used to headbang while playing so hard he either completely or all but broke his neck, so he had to wear a neck brace whenever he played. Again, a tribute to that that Babymetal picked up. Finally, this used to be their opening song, which makes sense, especially for the lyrics, outside the fact that no-one would expect such a heavy song to come from a 15 (16 at this show) and 13 to 14 year old girls. For this show, it was their final song, as Su was crucified at this show and reborn into the metal goddess she is today. This was her Sweet 16 birthday party, as 1997 was the year she was born. So picture it: They opened the show with Ave Maria, and closed it with BabyMetal Death. quite the contrast! They had similar shows for Moa and Yui (Legend M and Legend S) as well. So that's what's going on here!

Released on 2013 Jan. 9th, coupled with IJIME, DAME, ZETTAI (included in the limited edition). Lyric: KITSUNE of METAL GOD / Music: KITSUNE of METAL GOD / Arr.: Yuyoyuppe Usually, this is the opening tune of BABYMETAL's concert. BABYMETAL DEATH (We Are BABYMETAL) B x A x B x Y x M x E x T x A x L DEATH!! [i] The letters "DEATH" only means "to be" (= DESU/DES_). The official lyric really consists of only the above one line. Maybe the staff thought too many "DEATH"s are inappropriate. The Japanese word "desu" (??) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "??" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself. I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "??" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work. [ii] Is This Death Metal? There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well. ROMAJI LYRIC AND NOTES ARE BELOW. BABYMETAL DEATH (We Are BABYMETAL) Romaji Lyric English Translation Notes [[BABYMETAL DEATH. (x16)]] [[We are BABYMETAL. It's also a play on words, "Desu" or "to be" or "it is" and SOUNDS like "Death" if you slur it a bit. So when they say their names it's "Su-metal is" and chanting then "Yui-metal is" and then "Moa-metal is" and then "Babymetal is", swap out that is for "I am" or "We are" and it makes a lot more sense as an opener. So it's a bit of slurred words fun, a declaration of who they are, a celebration of their existence, and in this case celebrating Su's birthday :) People in the crowd, if Japanese, are playing along and know what's up or they're just screaming "Death" which also works and sets a scene for the mixed language or English crowd. All around it's far more interesting than is let on but in the end just a 16 yr. old's birthday party and an opening declaration of the band. :P

The song is BABYMETAL DEATH The show was Legend "1997" Su-metal Seitansai It was performed on 21 DEC 2013 at Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan -- BABYMETAL DEATH is a deliberate jeu de mots of the onomatopoetic 'desu'. BABYMETAL DESU sounds like BABYMETAL DEATH. So, the actual lyrics are, Su-metal desu (I am Su-metal) Yuimetal desu (I am Yuimetal) Moametal desu (I am Moametal) BABYMETAL desu (We are BABYMETAL) -- Put the pronunciation of desu together with the heavy metal trope of death, and you get BABYMETAL DEATH. But you knew that. -- As for the imagery? The introductory narration of the show provides some clarification: The Second Impact. Return to me, tracing your memory..." -- And the introduction of BABYMETAL DEATH: Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven. It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal, she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess. The gene which has been determined from ancient time is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time. The apocalypse prophesied the DOOMSDAY. Towards it, there remains... little time... (5) Are You (4) Ready to (3) (2) Mosh'sh (1) Mosh'sh (0) Mosh'sh -- This represents the destruction of the human form of Su-metal (the warrioress) and her rebirth as the Goddess Su-metal on her "special night" (her seitansai or holy birthday). It is why so many of the kitsune refer to Su-metal as a Goddess. It was her destiny to be the warrioress and become the goddess. It was passed down through her family lineage (her genes) until the time was right and The Fox God decided that the world needed saving through Metal. -- But don't expect any of that to make sense tomorrow. The LORE of BABYMETAL is contorted, inconsistent, and even contradictory. Sometimes within the same show. However, on that night, in that venue, with that performance, Su-metal became a goddess to the fans. -- TL;DR: Read it anyway you lazy bastards.

Up until 2018, Babymetal Death was the song they opened shows with, except on special occasions (such as this). It's the group announcing themselves. "Su-metal desu", "Yuimetal desu", "Moametal desu", "Babymetal desu" = I am Sumetal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal. The word "Desu" is pronounced much like "Death", hence "Babymetal Death".

Unsurprisingly, this song was dropped from BABYMETAL's live set after the death of guitarist Mikio Fujioka...... (he's the one playing the solo in this video) ...who tragically passed away in January 2018. It is unlikely that it will ever be performed again: especially now, after the emergence of the deadly corona virus. Suddenly everyone chanting "death death death death" is no longer quite such a cool thing anymore.......
@autohmae

My guess is the song was mostly dropped because Babymetal isn't yet whole again, one member is missing. But who knows. The other explanation is a VERY valid one as well.

It wasn't dropped because of Mikio's death. It was dropped because it literally introduces each of the girls, and one of the girls, Yui, had left the group, so it would be redundant to do this song without Yui present to introduce herself.

Every time I hear this I go back to thinking about this first album. First off you have Doki Doki Morning, cutesy, poppy, and then they release iine, more cuteness and lots of everything else and then people probably saw Gimme Chocolate. So the people go out and buy the album and this what you get for a first track, virtually no lyrics and THAT music. Someone at the record company had to be having a laugh.

I have noticed this with a few of your videos before, it seems like we can hear only one of the stereo channels. Are you doing that on purpose to avoid copyright problems or something? @K Darlings As @@autohmae said above, perhaps an explanation of Reactor Hub could be useful. I'll get the inevitable out of the way first - this does not work on iPhone/iPad, but it does work on Android and on PC. Apple's closed system does not allow the playing of two videos simultaneously. Reactor Hub - jeole.github.io/reactorhub/generator.html This allows reacting to videos without having to worry about them being blocked or you having copyright strikes on your account. It allows you to monetise your video and not share the monies and gives both you and the original uploader views on the individual videos. It's very easy to do. When you record your reaction you don't include any footage or audio from the original video, just upload the video of you reacting. Type the URL for your video in the Reaction Video box and adjust the volume as required. It's set at 50% by default. Type the URL of the video you're reacting to in the Talent Video box and again, adjust the volume as required. *Do not use shortened links, these will not work. You must use the proper URL. Timings - Leave the first one at 00:00:00 and put the time stamp where you click play on the video in the "Sync start" box. Click the link generator button and it'll give you the link. You can paste this in the description box below your reaction. remember to say that the link is there so people know to look for it :-) I created a link for the BABYMETAL DEATH video so you can see how it looks (assuming you're not using iPhone/iPad to view) jeole.github.io/reactorhub/index.html?reactor=kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8efebWd3JaVoqM.html&talent=kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLiTbMeTzM-mgH0.html&reactorVOL=25&talentVOL=100&Start=00:00:00&Control=00:1:28,play Try it out. How did this "Death" thing take hold in english ???? i guess the management just thought well , if thats what english people think it is and like it . lets go with it. The chant actually is BABYMETAL DES.... meaning WE ARE Babymetal , or literally Babymetal We Are. Oh well as they say in Hollywood, don't let the truth get in the road of a good story.
@cadiazm
@cadiazm 4 жыл бұрын
It's a play on words, so yes you're right it means "desu", but at the same time it does also mean "death". You should remember Koba is a metalhead, he knows what he's doing so he exploited the similarity of pronunciation in Japanese of desu and death, and use the "death" metal imagery. So everything is well on purpose, from the beginning. (Also remember very little Moa trying to pronounce the English "th" in Death)
