This was a key performance for the band. It was their first western metal festival. They were very worried about how a rowdy UK crowd of metalheads would receive them. They were warned that they might get booed or worse, bottled. So those tiny 16 and 14 year old girls went out and gave their all and wowed the crowd. The success of this performance is really what made the band realize they could make it outside of Japan. It was a pretty huge deal for them.

a heart warming event for the girls , and all their hardwork over the years gave them the ability to give a rock solid show to a potentially hostile crowd. Amazed everytime i watch this clip. and the band ...WTF ????

Were they supposed to have played a smaller stage that day, but at the last minute, they changed it? This is what I was told. Its apparent they blew every other act OFF the stage that day

@@AlizeeDefan That was the rumor for a long time, but it tuns out to be an exaggeration. They were supposed to play a smaller stage originally, but the move to the main stage was announced over a month before the festival, so it wasn't really a last minute thing. Hardly takes away from how epic it must have been for 3 teen girls who don't speak the language completely rock 60000 shocked UK metalheads. A miracle from the FOX GOD no doubt! 🤘🦊🤘

Babymetal's choreographer is Mikiko Mizuno also known as Mikikometal. She was the stage director and choreographer for Japan's cultural presentation at the 2016 Summer Olympics closing ceremony and is one of the choreographers working on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She has own dance troupe Elevenplay and does choreography for other Amuse groups like Sakura Gakuin and Perfume. Babymetal's success is due in part to the high quality team behind them. The lead guitarist of Galactic Empire, a US metal band that was one of Babymetal's guest acts last year in Japan said of them: "The BABYMETAL crew has been, hands down, the most amazing, hospitable and accommodating crew we have ever worked with, and their live show is something truly incredible. The talent and work ethic of everyone involved is, in my experience, absolutely unparalleled. Every band, every crew, every show should aspire to match their level of greatness." And that is how you make the absolutely demented idea of "kawaii metal" work.

Agreed. This song is so well written. It aleays impresses me with how shreddy and fast it is while still managing to balance perfectly with Su's vocals. Thats a hard thing to do. Somehow they managed to make thr song very guitar driven while still allowing Su to carry the song.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🚫 This was near the beginning of their first European tour. There was a bit of a warm up before this big festival show in the UK on July 5th. They played Paris on July 1st, and Cologne on July 3rd. Those were the shows were Yui and Moa each took over lead vocals on 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!!!' to celebrate their fifteenth birthdays. Kami Band members for the Sonisphere concert were Hideki Aoyama on drums, BOH on bass and Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus on guitars. My favorite part of 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' is still the part where Su-metal threatens to kick Yui and Moa in the head if they don't stop bullying each other. : ) Also, in this performance did you see Yui's costume start to unravel? If not, try rewinding and watching it again. They haven't performed this one since 'Legend S' in December of 2017.

The moment BABYMETAL took over the world! Notice Yui's ripped skirt, they were rocking hard that day! :) Babymetal doesn't really need those huge production stages, they bring the show anyway (even though I don't mind those enormous stage productions)

This is the song which made me reassess my thinking on Babymetal. It is quite powerful song in terms of it's message. Bullying is a serious problem in Japanese society and has been for decades. It continues to result in dozens of suicide deaths every year. Deaths across all age groups shockingly it is not unusual for children under 12 yrs to die as a result of bullying. Their is also a stigma attached to these suicide which in many cases has led to schools or offices turning a blind eye and attempt to cover up incidents. So I think its impressive that the band make such a public statement, all the more powerful as it isn't some agency or another adult but by 3 young girls.

Hey BJ! Great reaction as always. You have it right, this was their first big show in the west. It was announced a month or two before the show they were getting moved to the main stage, it was something they weren't prepared for and the girls were scared how the UK metal heads would react to them. I've seen the whole set and by the third song the crowd was won over. The Kami Band is made up of some of the best metal musicians from Japan. There are a few of them who rotate in and out based on availability as they all have their own projects and bands as well. Playing here from stage left to right: Mikio Fujioka (guitar), BOH (bass), Hideki Aoyama (drums), Leda Cygnus (guitar). Watching this video is always bittersweet because Mikio passed away in January of 2018 due to a fall from a stargazing platform. He was an avid stargazer and it's believed BabyMetal's song "Starlight" is a tribute to him.

Hi from the UK. You're right about the crowd. Rock crowds over here can turn nasty if they don't like what they see. Usually bottles of urine are the favourite weapon of an angry mob. Babymetal really earned their stripes on this one. You mentioned the musicians (The Kami Band).Akatsuki live shows off the band well as does Rondo of Nightmare with the Mischief of Gods intro. Hope you get round to them soon.😁

great reaction BJ!! the most amazing thing about this is that they have, Su-Metal 16 years old, Moametal and Yuimetal 14-15 years old and they kick so much ass!!! this show is legendary for the band and for us the fans of Babymetal, a big win for how things happened, even in the end the crowd asked for more! the band the Kami Band is incredible, the best musicians that Japan can offer, in that show the guitarists are Mikio Fujioka (on the left, RIP) and Leda Cygnus (on the right) the bass player is BOH is a master of 6 strings bass and the drummer is Hideki Aoyama he is a beast in the drums ... They play depending on availability, the bass player and the drummer are almost always the same but the guitarists have more rotation, the two I mentioned and one more than His name is Takayoshi Ohmura (he always brings a pink guitar) they are the most common Kami Band members, sadly Mikio Fujioka died last year in an accident and recruited Isao Fujita on the guitar ... but they are all high level musicians . I think you'll love it when you see Babymetal live in two months! please react to more Babymetal, Akatsuki live in budokan 2014 black night is a great one, it's a Su-metal solo my favorite solo of her here is a link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZhjapV0mraufIE.html

Team Babymetal is full of top talents. Every member of the Kami Band is worth to following. Small shows have the advantage that you are close to the stage. I like the small ones more for this reason and the big shows are on DVD anyways ;) (yes to be there is also awesome) . This song has also very good lyrics worth reading imho. I think everything is said with less words : I couldn’t even see that dream Alone in the verge of light and darkness The one who gets hurt is not me alone But also you who keeps watching Not having the confidence (don’t lose), I keep on hiding (I don’t want to be inferior!) I’m saying goodbye to me who was like that yesterday Bullying (no!) bullying (no!) That’s not cool (No! No!) Getting hurt, hurting others, Getting covered in wounds Fox (stop!), fox (stop!), Surely you will fly Your pains, your sadness, Unleash them all Because I will protect you In a night when I feel like crying but unable to show my tears I'm alone in a room deep within my heart The one who hurt me is not just someone else It’s a friend who pretended not to notice Not being able to (nothing) say anything (say nothing), I gave up I'm saying goodbye to me who was like that yesterday REF Pain I feel it Always Alone My heart Pretends not to notice I won’t run anymore Bullying, no, definitely! Dearly, painfully, with a strong heart, From now on, I don’t want to see your crying face anymore REF Bullying, no, definitely Bullying, no, forever Bullying, no, definitely Bullying, no, definitely!

You already read a lot of what people wrote, but I'll add an other story about Sonisphere, after the show someone uploaded a compilation of 'fancams' on KZfaq, which got more views than the videos from all other bands combined from that festival. They sold out all the Babymetal merchandise at the festival I think, at least all the shirts in the common sizes, anyway mostsold that last day of the festival if I'm not mistaken. Not uncommon for Babymetal. :-) 4:56 I really like Su-metal/Suzuka's expression there, assessing all the damage they've done and see it's gigantic. ;-) Babymetal is kind of like a force of nature, if people after their WTF moment open their minds they will be in awe or awww of the power of Babymetal.

You think going to a BABYMETAL show is like going to a "concert". A BABYMETAL show, in my humble opinion, is a LIFE ALTERING EVENT. You will go through emotions you never even knew you had and come out mentally exhausted, but somehow feeling "different". Better, as a human. It really is a mind-blowing phenomenon...They are very special...

Hm. Is it really so? I have my doubts about going to the show when they will come in my country next year. Money and travel aren't so much of an issue, but what I'm afraid of is disappointment. Besides, I'm not a concert-goer at all. Probably it's all in the eye of the beholder, and what is a life changing event for you, can be hardly enjoyable for a depressed shit like me.

Great reaction. Su was born in Dec 1997 so she would have been 16 going on 17 in this video (the other girls would be around 15). What I really like about this video is it showcases SU's singing ability while jumping up and down and you can't hear her fumble anything. The energy that they put into their shows is just unbelievable, to keep that up for 60 to 90 minutes (not sure this performance was that long) is just amazing for these girls, I get tired just watching them. And the best part is it leaves you with a smile on your face, can't say that for any band I've ever heard.

To confirm your estimate: This performance was on July 5, 2014, so it was the day after Moa's birthday (with Yui being two weeks older than Moa), thus they were, indeed, both 15. :) Absolutely agreed! Their energy is like some kind of superpower.

It all started with a Facebook petition to get them to play Sonisphere, needing 2k people, which they got quickly, so the orginisers booked them. Then they realised that so many people were interested in them, and with that the side stage can only hold about 3k, it would never cope with the interest so moved them from the Sunday side stage to opening the main stage on the Saturday. Noraly for the opening act you'll get any where from 5k-10k many be a bit more if you are sort of known, but Babymetal pulled in around 40-50k. People just wanted to see the band that were starting to make the press talk about a new type of band.

Seeing them in a small venue is certainly different from festivals and the big concerts that they do in Japan with 20K+ people. It has a different feeling to it, you can get much closer to them, you can have eye contact with the girls and the band members. The mosh pits are much safer and friendlier. The crowd is much more hyped than elsewhere, and you can have lots of fun talking to other fans while lining up before the show. Do not expect fog machines and flame throwers, or giant screens though. If I could chose I would go to small venue concerts. Only when you have seen them several times in small venues should you consider going to festivals or flying to Japan just to see them on their home turf.

There were at least several hundred Babymetal fans in the front. But the girls waiting backstage could only see a few hundred people total. There is a photo which shows the trio just before they went on and they were looking pretty grim. The festival did not let the kamiband finish their soundcheck based on time. Yui's hood got caught in her twin tails during the entrance and Moa's in-ear monitors were not working at first and she missed her first couple dance cues. But the fans up front gave Su confidence and she knew they were going to win the crowd halfway through the first song (Babymetal Death). Yui caught up with that a couple songs in, but Moa just stayed determined to give her best no matter what all through. There were a few Yui-tears during the brief break for the video intro to I, D, Z. The audio is really good on this video picking up Yui and Moa really well. But there is also a fan cam version of the whole 30 minute set with decent audio. If you pick the slightly longer version with a lot more views, at the very end you can hear the announcer laugh and say "holy sh!t."

I'm going to do my best not to turn this into a novel, but here goes. As many people have already pointed out, this was Babymetal's first real introduction to the west. Their first album had released just a couple months before this show. Prior to that their only real exposure outside of Asia was a few KZfaq videos of their songs. It's a safe bet that very few people in the crowd had even heard of Babymetal. Babymetal's set list for this show consisted of 5 songs, (in order) Babymetal Death, Gimme Chocolate, Catch Me If You Can, Megitsune and this song, Ijime, Dame, Zettai. If you watch the videos for these songs in order you can see the change in the crowd as they go from "WTF is this?" to "That was AWESOME". You can also see the change in the girls. When they start the first song you can see that they're a bit anxious. Remember, at this time the girls were very young and this was their first large venue outside of Asia. Su (the lead singer) was only 16 years old. Moa and Yui were either 14 or 15 at the time. They had no idea how the crowd would react. Keep in mind that the crowd at Sonisphere has been known to be a bit brutal when it comes to acts they didn't like, up to and including throwing garbage at the stage. As the performance progresses you can see the girls go from that initial anxiety to, well, what you saw in this video. They had the crowd eating out of their hands, and they knew it. As you saw, the show ended with the crowd chanting "We want more!!". All in all it was a win for Babymetal and a win for the metal heads at the show.

IDZ in my opinion is their most underrated song. Not that people dont like it but its just perfect in every way. It has gobs of energy, it has a real message, the instrumentation is outstanding, the length is just right, the use of backing vocals stands out in a unique way, and its one of the best songs for Su's lead vocals. Its just the perfect recipe for their style.

It was this performance that broke Babymetal into the western metal scene. They made tons of new fans and a lot of writers for the various metal magazines also saw this show. So for months afterwards they were getting glowing reviews in the magazines and there were a lot of metalheads talking about them to friends and whatnot. They even won several metal awards for things like best live performance and best new group that year. I know its almost certainly already on your list but you should do Rondo Of Nightmare with the Mischiefs Of Metal Gods intro next. It is a solo song by Su, the lead singer and during her solo songs they always highlight the Kami Band. It's a great performance. Great reaction again - you made us wait for this one after your Road of Resistance reaction, I hope your next Babymetal reaction comes a little sooner. As others have confirmed this was indeed that performance, their first major event outside of Asia, that really made everybody sit up and take notice. This was the last song of their (5 song I think) set that day and you are right, they gained a whole lot of new fans among those 60,000 people there to see it - and the courage it must have taken for 3 girls, one aged 16 and the other two just turned 15 a matter of days before to step out in front of that crowd on their first visit to this foreign country, not able to speak the language. Su even had the crowd singing along with her about chocolate in Japanese at one point. OK, I'll watch your reaction again now. :-)

I was waiting with eager anticipation for your next BABYMETAL reaction and again enjoyed it. I thought your pronunciation was pretty good. You are also correct that originally they were scheduled to perform on a smaller stage but got moved to the main stage. Some people and publications thought they would be eaten alive by the hard core metal fans at Sonisphere but, as you witnessed, they rocked it and won them over. This performance is one of my personal favorites. I like you giving a shoutout to the Kami Band, the musicians in this band. All of them are absolutely top notch. As you continue your journey of discovery you will come across songs that kickoff with the band showing off their stuff before the girls take the stage. I think you'll enjoy them. As for reactions, as much as we look forward to them, just do them if and when you can. Though others may not like that, it's best to do this on your own terms. Ive seen them in the US at medium/smaller venues and in Japan in huge arenas. The good news is, both show types are awesome but quite different! I will say I prefer the Japan shows because you get such a unique experience and the crowds over there are so unified and focuses it creates a special feeling....but in a totally different way, the smaller venue crowds at US shows are a blast as well. You get that up close feel that makes up for the less crazy stage and theatrics. Although they still put on a decent visual show considering the circumstance. One tip, dont be hesitant to try and get close to the rowdier areas. You dont have to get in the pit if you dont want to but being around the energetic fans rubs off and adds to the excitement of the show. The closer to the stage and the more involved you are with a smaller venue BM show, the more fun it is. Ive seen them from a balcony once...never again. It was still fun but not even ose to the same enjoyment as being on the floor.

How to tame 60.000 British Metalheads , They allways get a good responce in UK since then. The organisers of Download festival in UK said they would never play there . Dragon force a British metal band who had helped them with Road of Resistance and the guitarists had played on the album version invited them to vist them word got round and they did Road of Resistance and Gimmie choclate on stage with Dragon force, crowd went nuts . The organisers Invited them back next year and played main stage . Which comes to check out Karate live at Download even if it is just for yourself . kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p752bJeDrL-pnas.html

Excited for the concert in LA. Will be my daughters second time seeing Babymetal live. She was 6 the first time. The San Francisco concert was small and I didn’t see much as she was sat on my shoulders for the entire time! It was her first and only concert, but a totally awesome event for us. She has been on a mission to spread Babymetal at school ever since. She did make an awesome Babymetal t-shirt in art class. She can be a bit self conscious about other stuff but Babymetal gets her pumped. You will love the concert.

Great reaction again. You don't have to talk during the performance. Your expressive face says it all. The Kami band has some of the best musicians in the world. The fact that they can switch between genres effortlessly and express themselves with faultless performances while still innovating and playing variations from night to night is a testament to their skills. Enjoy the concert and consider taking ear plugs as BABYMETAL concerts are loud. ..and go early as people start queuing early and the vibe outside is awesome. I would love to see you do Headbanger (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h6ujgsR-x7Sqp6s.html) next, but try to stick to the live performances as they are usually better than the music videos.

The band IS the reason the girls are famous....many metal heads listen to actual music... yeah these guys are just so ridiculously good that well .... they are considered Gods in our realm... and Su....... Total Fucking Goddess. I mean I don't wanna be fanatical or anything ... but it's really.... you're not gonna do anything but adore this brave, talented, gorgeous singer... and if I were you... I would go get a ticket to see them.... She's different live... At the Palladium in LA..... she rattled the rafters. Everyone there dropped bottom jaw. She actually is that good.

This wasn't written by me, but it's so great I keep copying it under reactions to this video: "Sonispere, dramatized :) This was their first tour outside of Japan (if you don't count their Singapore appearance), and their first UK show. They booked a small stage but, for an unknown reason, they were moved to the main stage at the last minute. Instead of 3-5 thousand of their loyal fans they faced 50+ thousand trve metalheads. This was a crowd waiting for Ghost, Deftones, Anthrax, and Iron Maiden. 90% of them knew absolutely nothing about BM. BM released their debut album just a few months before. The above mentioned bands had several albums and decades of history behind them. They were girls between 14-16, all their songs had backing tracks, they were not singing in English (the only other metal band that could get away with it in recent history was Rammstein). The backing band was made up of session musicians. The girls were singing about chocolate, and they were playing hide and seek on the stage, literally. They had their own made up fairy tale religion about the Fox God, and their hand sign was mocking the devil's horns. They were nobodies and they didn't belong on the main stage of a metal festival. They knew it well, and they expected to get booed and bottled, which was not at all uncommon at UK festivals. There were technical problems during the soundcheck, and the atmosphere was visibly tense. There's a backstage photo of the girls before the show and their faces read "WE ARE F*CKED" And they went on the stage and Yui's hoodie got stuck in her hair, Moa's headset did not work and she missed the opening moves of the choreo. There was a close up of Yui's face on the projector screen at this moment, she saw what was happening, and for a moment her expression was like "ok, forget it, NOW we are f*cked..." Yui's skirt also started to fall apart at the last song, IDZ. So what else happened? The crowd got a taste of the band at the soundcheck and they loved it. Then there was a funny Star-Wars style video intro shown on the big screens so that everybody knew that this band is about fun. The first song started (BM Death) and 30 seconds later there were moshpits forming. In the next song, Gimme Chocco, there was a call-and-response where Su effortlessly made the crowd sing the chorus with a Japanese accent. Next came CMIYC with the solos and everybody shat themselves. Then Megitsune and IDZ. The biggest circle pits and WOD's of the festival. At the end the crowd was chanting "we want more", everybody was talking about them later as the highlight of the festival, and their T-shirts were top sellers even two days later."

I'd say it's overdramatized. It even starts with wrong info: at the time they had 3 appearances in Singapore and performed in Indonesia and Taiwan. Also their moving to main stage for Sonisphere was announced almost 2 months before the festival.

Awww she used my translation of the title! I'm honored! Some translate it differently, often as "No more bullying forever" but I went a bit more literal. The way they separate it with commas made me want to translate each word one at a time. Her pronunciation was better than I expected! That "e" at the end of Ijime and Dame trips up a lot of English speakers, but she handled it well. Please do more! You have so much more Babymetal to cover before you see them live! I strongly recommend this performance of Akatsuki, which means "Red Moon." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZhjapV0mraufIE.html

They were booked on a small stage of loyal fans for their first show outside Japan, and got put on the main stage in front of 50,000 UK metal heads who'd never heard of them, a crowd known for throwing bottles full of piss at acts they don't like. The girls did not know this, stuck their heads out of the curtain, and Yui and Moa were terrified. Su said "This is gonna be fun." If you watch the whole 30 minute set, you can visibly see the crowd go from "Who or what the fuck is Babymetal?" to "We want more! We want more!"

You are right about the precision of their choreography but sometimes it goes tits up on them! This performance was a case in point. If you watch closely you'll see that Yui's skirt started to come apart on her and she spent half the song trying to disentangle her tutu from the studs on her wrist band. She pulled it off with consummate professionalism of course and that in front of about 60,000 sceptical UK metal fans!
