This particular performance is tear-inducing when you know the backstory : this was their first tour overseas (technically this was their 3rd performance of the tour, the first two being small venues for France and Germany) and they were originally meant to play at one of the smallest stages of that very emblematic UK metal festival. The girls were aged 16 (lead singer) and the other two girls had just turned 15. They had been doing a few good shows in Japan but they were still a pretty small band, and not many people knew of them in the West. There are 2010-2011-2012 interviews of them saying how it would be a dream to one day perform overseas and this was finally their moment. So back to the story, they were originally meant to play in one of the smaller tents/stage at Sonisphere, but on a whim, the organizers decided to bump them up to the big stage. A stage which would later see the likes of Iron Maiden, Anthrax and Metallica. This produced quite a negative buzz around some metalheads attending the festival or just being metal purists. There were numerous online discussions which involved people wanting to go to their show to boo them off and throw bottles at them for "not being metal" and being a "gimmick band". The girls, the poor girls, before going on stage, were scared to perform in front of an audience that could potentially be unfriendly toward their coming to that festival, let alone that big stage where legendary bands would later play. Worse than that, they were scared that nobody would turn up and that they'd basically perform in front of an empty field. They feed off the energy of the crowd. They crave it. But these brave girls, these courageous teenage girls who had this dream of doing what they love outside of Japan, went there and did their thing. I believe there were 5 or 6 songs played at this concert. At first, the crowd gathered wondering what the hell was up with this weird japanese band called "BABYMETAL". By the last song, the crowd had gathered, was throwing their fists in joy and was chanting for an encore. They had just conquered a crowd of fierce metalheads, who were all ready to find any reason to hate on BABYMETAL. But instead History happened. This was the beginning of their conquest of the world. These girls had done it. They'd done their thing with professionalism and courage, as always, and had forever put their mark on metal history. Apparently, after this performance, BABYMETAL merch outsold all of the other bands in that festival. Since then, BABYMETAL likes to call UK their "second home." One last note : Ijime, Dame, Zettai literally means "No more Bullying, Forever." When I rewatch this particular performance with this backstory in mind, it is almost impossible for me to keep a poker face. There's always that little mix of emotions that run through me : pride, joy, happiness. My eyes get wet. Ah well. This only gets better Dramasyde. Have fun on this fabulous journey ;).

You are so overblowing it, they were known before this because they've done a few shows there before even that last minute change up happened months before so everyone knew and at that show people mainly went because of the kami band, but it still was an amazing show
This is babymetals very first exposure to a western audience in 2014 they were originally supposed to play in front of a smaller crowd of about 2000 people on a side stage and at the last minute they were switched to the main stage and the rest is history

@Mark Spohn There was a bit of a warm up overseas before this big festival show in the UK on July 5th. They played Paris on July 1st, and Cologne on July 3rd. Those were the shows were Yui and Moa took over lead vocals on 'Headbanger!!!' to celebrate their fifteenth birthdays.

Acually they knew they were going to be on the big stage but when su-metal yuimetal and moametal came on stage they did not see the crowed when they did the first song they all said oh crap nobody came to see them but when they were done with the first song they saw the crowed and made history to take over the world with there music.

Not last minute, a few months in advance. There were however people who were threatening to throw bottles on them and boo them off online. There was a lot of outrage from that decision to put them on such a stage where the likes of Metallica, Anthrax and Iron Maiden would later play.

As has been said, this is an anti-bullying song, hence the fighting scenes in the choreography. In the lyrics the bullied person accuses not only the bullies, but also the so-called friends who standing by doing nothing. Great message! This performance has a special significance for fans, as it marks the beginning of their success in the West. Many expected them to get booed off the stage by that British crowd of Metalheads, instead they left them wanting more. I like the end of the „We are“ part at the end, when Su is shaking her hand around wildly, you can really sense the feeling of joy and relief replacing the pressure and tension.
@Grington3004 жыл бұрын
Great reaction. You have a new subscriber. They played a couple of small venues in France and Germany a few days before this - and celebrated Yui's and Moa's 15th birthdays at those shows. Su, the lead singer, was 16. This was their first major event outside of Asia. They were originally booked for a small side stage but there was a buzz going round and interest being expressed, so the promoter moved them to open the main stage on the Saturday morning (contrary to popular myth they had a couple of months notice of this). On the day it is said they were given no extra time to do any sound checks or to mark the stage for the choreo and were told if they overran they would be cut off. The BABYMETAL team are nothing if not professional and had a contingency plan for this sort of thing, just in case, so they could adjust the set accordingly etc. The Kami Band went on stage to do quick sound checks and in doing so each played short solos - they attracted some attention and the crowds started to gather. Early on a Saturday at Knebworth/Sonisphere is usually not a busy time, on this occasion there were about 60,000 metalheads there looking forward to seeing Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Metallica and so on. The vast majority had never heard of BABYMETAL, some who had were potentially going to be trouble - they considered BABYMETAL to be a manufactured band hi-jacking metal for a joke or for the money (neither of which was ever true) and were prepared to throw bottles of urine and boo them off stage. The girls were all nervous before going on stage - they were at a huge event in a foreign country where they didn't speak the language. They tried to look out to see if anybody was there, but from their angle they could see nobody and wondered what they would do if nobody came to see them, but out they walked to see the biggest crowd they had ever seen. Legend has it (and if you find a video of the whole performance you can almost see it on her face as they walk on stage) Su's nerves disappeared and she was thinking "This will be fun". As they went into their first number Moa's headset failed so she missed the cue to start the choreo, Yui was seen glancing across with an even more worried look on her face. Moa fortunately caught the sound of the drums and picked up the choreo. As they went through their set (just 5 or 6 songs - 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' was the finale) they witnessed the crowd reaction spreading slowly from the front to the back - starting with expressions of "WTF is this?" changing to "this is actually quite good" with smiles appearing on faces and then to "this is great - must headbang!" By the end of the set you just witnessed what happened with the crowd calling for "one more song". They had the biggest mosh pits of the whole weekend and their t-shirts and merchandise outsold all the other bands for the rest of the weekend. This was a turning point in BABYMETAL's history and is a legendary and significant performance among the fans of BABYMETAL.

You'll be playing your pop / metal hybrid genre of music that you created, to thousands of hard core metal heads, probably drunk, possibly violent, that have a language and cultural barrier. Now BABYMETAL sold out 55,000 Tokyo Dome for two nights, sold out arena shows in London and LA, but in 2014, their biggest gig was at Budokan, 10,000-person venue just a couple of months before this show. So Sonisphere was the biggest for them. Majority of the audience was skeptic about them, and many metal elitists were ready to bottle them, and the 16-year-old girl and the 14-year-old girls overwhelmed them all.

This is a special performance, this is their first Western appearance, and originally were suppose to play a small tent for what was at the time their small Western fan base. At the last minute they were told they where to play the main stage. During the sound check they attracted some attention and by the time their set started they had the crowd you just saw. This festival is known for metal heads throwing literal bottles of piss at acts they thought were weak or fake, so the girls were a bit nervous wondering how a mostly metal crowd would receive three Japanese teen girls 'playing' at metal ... Despite a bit of problems with the sound during the first song they pushed ahead and won over the crowd ... making a name for themselves in the West, and the rest is history!
@JGM0JGM4 жыл бұрын
"At the last minute they were told they where to play the main stage." Well, if you consider three-months notice "last minute", sure... lol... Don't worry, this is a common misconception, and, frankly, if there are no legends written about you, how can you call yourself legendary? There is a promotional video released at least three months prior to the show that annonces that they had been moved from the small side tent to the main stage... But it doesn't remove one iota of courage from the girls, it was still a very big deal. But they were well prepared and had the guts to do it, and did they deliver! Kitsune up, Po!
@0okamino4 жыл бұрын
I think the "last minute" thing may have been that the girls themselves didn't quite get the scope of what the main stage would be until almost time to step out onto it. They played big crowds before, but this is on totally different turf for them. @JGM0JGM - Considering how tours are planned sometimes, three months can be "last minute" regarding some concerns. I don't think it caused any upset in their plans, though. Well, maybe in one way. I've heard that their original spot would have put them much closer to where the food vendors were. Moa must have been a bit disappointed when they were moved. :D

The Kami Band (Kah-mee), or God Band, are some of if not the most sought after and accomplished musicians in Japan. Sadly, the Ko Gami, Little God, passed away nearly 2 years ago. He was stage left with the black guitar. Mikio Fujioka fell from a stargazing platform right around Christmas time 2017. He was a founding Kami Band member, guitar sensei at Tokyo Music Institute and friend of all of Babymetal. Please react to this tribute song from Babymetal, Starlight. Good job man. These kids are growing fast. Their potential is off the charts. Hopefully they do more within the english language which will expose them to even greater audiences. Anyhoo, your reaction is fun cause its real. Yep, three young girls who thanks to a killer backing band smack you in the face, and hard. You get it. This is good stuff period, regardless what you THINK metal should be. I'm an old metal head who grew up on Sabbath and Zepplin and Metallica took time for me to appreciate. These goofs nailed it right off the bat, the producer, the girls, and the Kami Band. Pretty much a perfect storm of talent. Hope there is more in store for them.

This song is about bullying and stopping it. When Moa and Yui jump up on their stands they are saying no, no ,no, dame, dame, dame. Ijjime, dame, zettai, translates to bullying no more. An excellent video for you next is the special birthday rendition of the song BabyMetal Death: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpqPa5Rq19-uYaM.html BabyMetal used to use the song BabyMetal Death as the first track for their gigs. BabyMetal did the same thing to me when i first heard the, saying that you should follow that with an full on all metal girl named BAND-MAID. Listen to DICE.. all five of these young ladies hold their own in my opinion.

I'm just scuttle buggin here but I find it funny you see them as cheerleaders who were kick off the squad for bullying in a video for a song about anti-bullying You kinda got the theme without realizing it Reacting to BabyMetal live is always best but there are a couple of official music videos you should react to as well Karate and Megitsune You can always react to both versions

Think of it this way, an audience waiting on some mostly old men to come out and scream at them with varying musical ability in their band . Instead 3 young cute/pretty girls appear in front of a band playing at a high degree of musical skill and talent, then the girls begin performing. They sing without screaming, they dance with talent and skill in a foreign language. That audience never had a chance. Side note Babymetal set a new record at Sonisphere for tee shirts sold.

Su (the lead singer) is awesome for a lot of reasons but one of my favorites is because off stage she is a bit clumsy and goofy/silly...then she gets on stage and turns on badass mode. (That's not an insult...I am sure she would agree if you ever watch SG)

Headbangers got soft feelings but the three girls just harmonize it with headbanging coordinated on the background.

Despise all other things, i really love the tribute who made Babymetal in a lot of concerts to X-Japan The Screams WE ARE BABYMETAL is an obvious reference to the japanese metal band X-Japan, the producer of Babymetal is a big fan of this band Just look here to see the similarities kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM5ni7lz36fXl5s.html Btw, this is an EPIC concert in the history of Japan´s metal
