Having a first go at making a chair, with cabriole legs, carved feet, and lots of curves and angles. I'm no professional and I don't have anything to teach, this is just me, sharing my thoughts and my work. Join me as I'm learning fine woodworking!

Your videos are among the very best of the woodworking videos I have seen on all of KZfaq. Your skills and the projects you develop really are very impressive.

Wonderful work. I'm certainly down for handtool work but I think I'd give up woodworking if I had to resaw boards with a hand saw 😂

Always fun and encouraging to watch, Gillis. I heartily appreciate you working it all by hand. I'm constantly hearing the siren of power tools to make it easier and/or faster. Especially with other KZfaq woodworkers constantly zipping through projects as fast as they can, like they just gotta get it done, or else! So, when I see you working with what you have, it gives me heart to keep building skill, save my money, and possibly my fingers/ears/eyes.

Thank you, glad you feel encouraged! I think a lot of youtubers probably feel pressure to get videos done quickly, as their income depends on it. For some, it probably really is a case of gotta get it done, or else the bills can't be paid! Power tools also seem to be more popular, though it's hard to say if that's because there actually are more people interested in them, or just because of how they let videos get done faster. It's a tricky topic!

Gillis I must say you do have courage to start carving in your final workpiece while you "design as you go". I used to do that as well -- before I realized it was better to make a test piece first. That saved me from recreating the good part I messed up.

Gillis, I think you’re one of the most capable woodworkers on KZfaq. Amazing how well you added carving to such a complex piece with such confidence and skill, despite being inexperienced. Keep the great content coming friend.

Making such a detailed piece of furniture - cabriole legs, carved feet, etc. is very ambitious for a first attempt at chair making, especially without plans, but the challenge in creating is the heart & soul of woodworking - enjoy the process.

Gillis besides this is a piece of impressive craftmanship the video is also a pleasure to watch. I am so glad you did not post the video in high speed playback like so many woodworkers do. For me I would not mind if you cut longer scenes, some scenes are a bit short now. 45 minutes for this video would be more than acceptable, given the scope of work you completed.
@GillisBjork
@GillisBjork Жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you think so. It's a tricky balance, I myself get bored and start skipping forwards when scenes are too long in this type of video, but I try to keep it dynamic with shorter and longer cuts intermixed. It would probably be better to make two versions, one quick and snappy and one slower paced... Wish I had more time :)

HI, I'm always looking forward to watching your videos and I really enjoy the kind of projects you choose to share with us, not many out there like yours ... I'm about to buy the Veritas dual marking gauge and have noticed You have on yours the "shaft clamp" ... do you think it is worth the money ? what is your thought about it ? Greetings from Italy
@GillisBjork
@GillisBjork Жыл бұрын
Many thanks! Hmm, spontaneous answer is yes, I use it all the time. But when I think about it, a lot of the time I just use it as an extra way to tighten down the main bar, since I find the thumbscrew is sometimes slipping, and with the bars locked together you basically get an extra thumbscrew's worth of pressure. So that kinda begs the question if the whole marking gauge even is worth it. I'd say no without the shaft clamp, I would only buy the gauge with it. But I don't know if other brands lock down tighter; if so, the whole tool is not great by comparison.

Color match issue: Don't know the solution, but I would cheat and set back the rails and stiles about an 1/8 of an inch instead of flush with the leg. And/or add a carved detail to the leg.

For marking short distances I find using a chisel butted up to the ruler/square/whatever is a quite convenient way of making lines.

@@GillisBjork when you used the ruler as a square and had to scribe carefully to avoid nudging it over I would probably done with a chisel instead.

Bra jobbat. Blir nog en fin stola att njuta av/på. Är du utbildad finsnickare eller självlärd? Hur ofta gör du fel när du bygger grejer?
@GillisBjork
@GillisBjork Жыл бұрын
Tackar!
