Today we are chambering the new Preferred barrel for the wife's rifle. We are using a PTG floating reamer set up. This will be chambered in a 6.5 Creedmoor. We really take our time here, plunging in only .050 at a time then as we get closer to the final depth we plunge much less. We really focus on sneaking up on the final reaming depth of the chamber. This allows us to really pay attention and hit the numbers right on the first time and avoid machining mistakes.
This has been a very fun project so far and I'm really looking forward to getting this done so we can get to the range soon and start the load development and testing.

One half of one ten thousandth? Based on your use of that particular test indicator, you are actually out a half of a thousandth. At that particular location on the rod. That 10 on the dial refers to ten of the ten thousandths increments or ONE thousandth. The really terrible thing about that method is that it is not repeatable. Try this, dial it in then pull the rod and re insert it, you will get a different reading. But, by using a floating reamer holder, that's ballpark good! The downside of that reamer holder is that in addition to floating it is also pivoting off the pressure of the single driving lever. That makes it ream a tapered hole. As a general rule, when a reamer is making dry (unlubricated) chips, it is drilling. Good video quality.

I'm looking to ream the barrel of a 1903/A3. Being as that it's chambered for .30-06, (.308) would I be safe using a reamer that measures .3125, or would that be considered too much headspace?

Why would you center the barrel to such a small degree and then have a free floating tailstock? It seems that is redundant. Belt and suspenders?

Your video looks great! I've watched a lot of your videos and just subscribed yesterday after watching your second MEC marksman press review. Im very new to handloading and I couldn't help but notice how little runout (if any) you were getting on your finished cartridges. I also have a new MEC press, I'm loading 30-06 useing forester micro adjust seating die, 165gr hornady sst and lapua brass (first fired). On some of the cartridges the needle barely moves but on others I'm getting up to .003 of runout. Is this normal? Or could it be something I'm going to create these little inconsistencies? Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. I've learned alot from watching your videos. Keep them coming and thanks.
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 3 жыл бұрын
Getting a small amount of run out is normal. It can be caused by several things, even brass spring back after sizing. If all your getting is .003 I wouldn’t worry much at all.

Glad to see you’re back making videos man. Picture looks great. Had a quick question. I’m getting ready to do my first chambering on a Savage barrel. If I heard right your target was 0.126” off the face of the go gauge to the face of the bore. I assume that’s equal to the depth of pocket in the bolt face. Do you try to hit that bolt face depth exactly, or do you make it a little long for a crush fit on your brass? Like + 0.001-0.002”? Thanks

.125 to .130 will work, but that depends on the caliber your reaming it for to.
