Our Champion 27 Ton has split about 20 plus cord of Fir and Alder and some Cedar. It has been a solid much needed addition on the five plus acres we use it for. We have done all our splitting Vertically , eliminating lifting the huge rounds that we have. I have towed it only two times on main roads , probably 15-20 miles , keeping 40mph and under , with no problem. Besides that, I'll tow it with the rider mower around the property. We were fortunate with the purchase in 2020 , list price was $1195.00 , subtract a $200 coupon and add to that Military Discount. Ended up just above $900.00. Some Hydraulic fluid was also purchased in there. Very reliable splitter. Thanks for your video .

I've got the same splitter, and I'm happy with it. I don't sell firewood but use it myself in the woodstove in my living room. Most of it is split by hand with axes, but the stuff that is too, as you put it, gnarly, is set aside to be split on the wood splitter. I split some big oak on it, and it's never failed to do the job. However, they are noisy. That's why I prefer axes. When I start it, I pull on the rope slowly until I feel the piston at compression, let the rope recoil completely, and the give 'er a big yank! This process makes starting it so much easier. That's a carryover from kick starting my old Harley, which is a story in itself! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the pull rope tip My stihl backpack blower has to be done like that. you take the rope in and out a couple times to make sure it’s wound tight before pulling slowly. Never thought about applying that to anything else

This is my experience with same unit: I was able to split oak at 27 inch diameter….very powerful unit. Almost started at first pull almost every time since new in 2019. I paid $899 at Home Depot on sale for mine…the best part. The bad: I just encountered no RAM and I was calling customer service multiple times and the wait time was about 90 minutes plus the conversation until someone familiar with my unit will give me their advice and I was ok with that…strangely. The Control Valve was their diagnostic over the phone and I ordered the part from them….it came in different style or different mounting style. So I have to go on same process 4 times,each time around 90 minutes waiting time like I mentioned before. They sent me another part or the correct part,but this time was a used part,easy to tell. So my unit sits in garage with extra money spent for the used part and their policy to my understanding even from other bloggers that once the part is used,they won’t refund their customer anymore….nice game they played with me. I will mention few other things: Their parts are not marked with anything,even technical information,so you almost have to relay only on their parts if possible. I will modify mine with other similar log splitters since their parts are readily available and plenty videos to repair properly this wood splitter at home. Even a basic oil filter from them is not market with the correct size,but it has a big yellow CHAMPION logo printed for commercial purposes. Clearly they don’t want to buy parts from other sources like a car manufacturer for example does.

Great review! Thank you for putting in the time. I split at least 10 cord/yr with my mauls and axes, it’s tough work. This definitely helped me with my decision. One thing I saw and that I will do (all splitters I am considering have the holding tables on the sides) is to bolt on a wooden platform to the table (just using my scrap wood) to extend the table. Thanks again.

I really enjoy your content and your varied subject matters. I would offer one idea that you may want to consider while splitting fire wood. My dad taught me that bending over and lifting heavy blocks and then having to bend or kneel to work was a bad idea. He loaded the splitter and the logs onto a large flat bed trailer and worked the splitter in a vertical orientation. He even cut the logs into the desired firewood lengths on the trailer. That allowed the cut lengths to be rolled rather than lifted onto the base of the splitter. Just something you may want to consider.
@woodruffwoods
@woodruffwoods 2 жыл бұрын
Nice video reviewing your splitter. I think that is a fine splitter for most of us doing moderate amounts of firewood. One guy suggested on my channel to put a board or chunk of wood in front of the splitter when in the vertical position. It works great to keep the round tilted into the splitter.

Brock, I used a 27 ton Troybilt with Honda engine for 18 years. I split about 6 cords a year and found very few pieces that were unsplittable. This year I upgraded to a SplitFire 3265. Kind of pricey, but extremely efficient and fun to use. The best upgrade is the hydraulic log lift. My back ain’t getting any younger!

I looked at these, but couldn't bring my self to buy one. There were to many things bolted together that I would have liked to have seen welded. Also I was very unsure about the motor. The price was $1800, for the Champion, I ended up finding a Brave with a Honda GX on sale for $2200. Im glad it's working well for you, though.

I was looking at this but the smaller foot print and faster cycle time for the Ryobi Kinetic Log splitter is appealing since it has no maintenance involved, will easily do smaller jobs and be easier to store. Am I making a mistake for someone who does small loads of medium size rounds and no larger rounds?

How many gallons of gas do you burn (approximately) to split a full one cord of wood to standard size for a larger wood stove that handles 16-20" logs? Just asking for your best guess to guage how much fuel it may burn per cord. Thank you.

South Mississippi here. Bought mine in a crate unassembled from Home Depot for $1300. I’ve read stories where the already assembled units often had issues due to being assembled wrong. It was a piece of cake to assemble and I did it by myself one piece at the time out of the back of my truck. Probably not the smartest thing to do especially when you get to the beam with the cylinder.

I have seen some Canada models with HONDA engines on them. I have the 27 ton splitter as you do. I brought mine from Home Depot for around $1,100.00. I do not have a fuel sight glass in my tank. I too would like to have a Bigger table on mine. I have the same concerns as you do about the oil and gas tank not being covered better. I have a dent on my tank from a pc of wood that hit it. I have been looking around from other splitter company's to buy one of there side tables. They have a Great CS in Calif. if you need them. I also wish they had a 4 way wedge that you could put on !

I have this splitter as well. I wouldn’t try making a living from it. But you could easily rent it out to neighbors for $50-75 a week while they split a few cords a year. It takes a good 4-6 hours to split a cord working solo. I’m looking to upgrade in 2 years. Log lifts & Honda motors with electric start. I’ll pay the coin. Keep small equipment indoors if you can.

That small yellow rack on the operator side of the splitter is mounted incorrectly, which can result in the wood being trapped between it and the wedge, which can result in the wedge being crammed into the "C" channel on the other side of the beam and bending it. The assemblers are mounting the racks upside down, which gives it the up curve, but it should be flipped so the rack is level with the beam. Home Depot had to replace my splitter as a result of the "C" channel and the rack being bent.
