Champion 338 cc Gas Chipper/Shredder is powered by a Champion 338cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke OHV engine.
Powerful chipper-shredder will chip most branches and shred most shrubbery and leaves into useful gardening or landscaping mulch.
Hardened steel chipper blades can chip up to 3" (7.6cm) max diameter thick branches.
Shredder chute will shred most shrubbery and/or leaves up to 1/2" (12.7 mm) max diameter.
12" (30.5 cm) Never flat wheels and handlebar make the chipper-shredder easy to move.
Includes 2-bushel collection bag to catch and collect mulch from both chutes.
Low-oil shut-off sensor automatically turns off the engine to prevent engine damage if oil level gets too low.
Vertical design for easy manoeuvrability and compact for storing.
I have been using this Shredder for the last six years. So far it is very dependable. I have only had to take the chipper unit apart for a significant jam once. That occured because I did not remove the bag soon enough. Just keep that in mind, don't let it back up into the machine.

Yea I just bought a new champion despite 3 in my area for sale as used "for one project". I picked up an mtd a few years ago from an older lady whose husband had passed for $150 that appeared immaculate. Fresh oil, no gas, no rust. Took it home and it fired up on the 2nd pull and sounded beautiful. Put a piece of wood in it and it literally started to burn the wood instead of chipping. Pulled it apart and that old man rip had been bashing the machine so hard he bent the wheel and broke the screws on the blades. Needless to say other than the motor it was trash. Last piece of equipment I'll buy used unless I personally know the individual.

The hopper has a larger throat opening than most chippers. Other chipper videos. Many have abandon using the hopper for leaves. Because You can only put in a small hand full at a time. And then you have to take a stick to push them into the blades.

At 11:30, you don't have to purposely reach deep down the chute up to your elbow to reach the blade. If you stick your hand down the chute, your hand or glove can get caught by tree limbs. The self-feeding nature of the cutting action will then pull your hand down the chute faster than you can yank it out.
@CaliforniaGardener
@CaliforniaGardener 2 ай бұрын
Its not really that fast, I've never been grabbed by a tree limb or caught by a branch. Not sure how that would happen. I actually have to feed the wood into this one, if I don't push it in it doesn't pull it down, so not really self feeding.

Very timely as I'm shopping for a champion. QUESTION, which chute would you use for garden trash like tomatoes with thick stalks and corn stocks, rotten tomato, potato, light shrubs?

May I suggest replacing the nuts holding the limb tube, and the clean out plate on the back with wing nuts? You may , or may not have to use lock washers. But would make it faster to un jam, or clean out the chipper.
@CaliforniaGardener
@CaliforniaGardener Жыл бұрын
Yeah that would work for sure. I don't use it that often. Once to twice a year. So Not something I use daily.

That willow looks really green. At around the 7:50 mark you start chipping some bigger limbs, if those were not so green would the unit still struggle like that?
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Жыл бұрын
Dry stuff seems to go through pretty good since it Chios better. The green willow sorta tears off. So it can start to foul the blade.
@dirtmover123
@dirtmover123 10 ай бұрын
It shouldn't be struggling with these branches. If the blades are well maintained and sharp it should more or less pull them in on its own. You certainly shouldn't have to push them in with your foot! I actually find green wood easier because you don't get the same vibrations and kickback coming back into your hand.

@@CaliforniaGardener Thanks for the video. Six years, problem-free, that's a good report, especially for the price. I'm shopping for a chipper/shredder, and will most likely go for this one. Did your unit have the current two year warranty? If so, did you put in a warranty claim? If you did, what was the result? Was the problem resolved? Knowing how companies respond when things go wrong with their products is, IMO, as or more important than just how well the products perform!

Or with the fuel valve turned off you can disconnect the fuel line going into the carb and place the end in a Jerry can and than turn the valve on and it'll gravity feed out of the fuel tank

@@CaliforniaGardener ......valid point... allergies are nasty... but do consider sharpening the blades... might make the cutting cleaner/faster?... slightly less dusty? Even though dis-assmbling the housing is a pain... it's good to get familiar with the innards... At the moment I'm trying to track down new replacement blades as Champion's are a bit pricey?... I think the dimensions are different to all the others out there?... Sharpened mine once, because I like the small chips from the 3 inch feeder, but the longer shredded stuff maybe due to less blade area, or blunt edges?... Anyway, great video.... and like others have said, beautiful property... thanks for doing it!

I just bought one with a 224 cc engine from Home Depot. I've only used it for a couple of days, but here are my initial observations. Even though it has a smaller engine, it seems to chip larger branches better than yours. Maybe you need to sharpen the blades? Mine will honestly chip a 3" branch with no problems, as long as it's somewhat green. Stuffing a totally dry one in will probably kill the motor after three or four feet, if I don't control the feed. Long, thin whippy branches and vines don't do well when fed through the top chute. Instead of shredding, they tend to come out in five or six inch chunks. The idiotic safety cover on the side chipping chute stopped me from feeding those through there, until I removed it. End of problem. Everything that isn't mostly leaves now gets stuffed through the side chute instead of the top.... Mine is a cutting fool; I figured out in a hurry I should gather and prep a pretty big pile of branches before even firing it up. It isn't all that easy to start. Throwing my full weight into a pull still doesn't get it rotating very fast, and it usually takes two, three or even four pulls. When starting it cold, I've learned to choke it for the first pull or two, then open the choke. And I learned to step on its stabilizer foot when starting it, after one mighty yank smacked it right into my big toe. It's still sore.... Be aware that both the shredder chute and the chipper chute will sometimes aggressively yank material out of your hands, Wear gloves. And I have colorful marks and bruises on one forearm, from a flexible branch that whipped around my arm as it was suddenly grabbed through the shredder chute.
