I just had to clean up my Craftsman mower that I bought new three years ago. I only used it a couple of times and was diagnosed with cancer. My lawn guy used it on my lawn a few times while I was sick. Three years later I got it out and it didn’t start. So cleaned out the float chamber and jet on the carb and changed the oil, and it started right up. I figured I should sharpen the blade. Surprise, it was on upside down. It has never been off, so it came that way from the factory. Sears ain’t what they used to be. The back side was all shiny from beating the grass. The cutting side was almost like new, just a little rusty.

Great video. My dad hated lawn mowers so he refused to maintain them. I had no clue how to do it when I was a kid. So I would put gas in and keep running it until it died. Then we would throw it in the trunk and drive up to the place that repaired and sold used mowers. He would trade the dead one in on a "new" one and the cycle would begin again. When I bought my house the old guy who lived next door gave me some tips on how to maintain my mower. That was 2002. I still have the same mower today.

Good video. Thanks for putting it together. The only thing I would comment on is changing the spark plug. Generally, the spark plugs that we use on lawn mowers are as robust as the ones we stick in our cars. Those spark plugs typically last for +80K miles (but should be inspected at more frequent intervals ~30K). Spark plugs on lawn mowers are easy to check (as you demonstrated). Instead of changing the spark plug, I would simply suggest inspecting it. If it ain't broke, don't replace it. If you are changing your spark plug out on a yearly basis, you have a higher chance of introducing a faulty plug than preventing the older one from going out (aka infant mortality). If you are replacing your spark plugs on a yearly basis because the spark plugs are going bad that fast, I would suggest that there is something else wrong with the lawn mower.

Blaine Edwards Very true, I replaced the spark plugs in my 21 year old garden tractor twice in its whole life. It ran fine why waste money on spark plugs when they weren't worn out and it was running perfectly fine. A shop on the other hand will certainly want you to replace the spark plug every time they touch your mower as its money in their pocket. This is why you need to learn to do these things on your own and only change what really needs changed....otherwise that tune up or service quickly costs as much as a new mower LOL.

My next maintenance on it will be is a clean up on the oil tube and checking the gasket for any wear

Great video. If I can suggest-when you have your mower on its side and drained of fuel & oil-good time to take the blade off and sharpen it (you mentioned it being important at the end of your video-but if avg home owner changes oil 1x per season-best to at least start the season with a sharp blade)...easiest with an impact gun-but a breaker-bar and a block of wood works. As for sharpening-I use an angle grinder b/c it is fast and effective. I clamp the blade horizontally-do one side then flip it around and do the otherside-after use a screwdriver to check for balance on the blade-if one side dips-take a bit more off it till it balances-i dip the threads in the use motor oil so the bolt doesn't seize in the shaft (do make sure it is tight-like lug nuts on a car tire-after your first mow-check blade for tightness-if you get vibration-that's a signe bolt is loose-tighten it before it comes off and hurts you! I think a new spark plug is the least important item in your tune up-if you have spark and your mower starts easily and runs-no need to change it and risk cross threading/stripping/over tightening/under tightening the spark plug-I have a '96 toro orig spark plug-starts 1st pull everytime. Again-great video!

Just to add, don't forget to set your spark plug to the correct gap. You could find the mower hard to start, lacking power or burn through spark plugs and possibly damage your engine as it won't provide the spark the mower needs to run correctly.
