We had to change the cable of a laptop power supply but found more interesting wiring that we expected. And the power supply wouldn't come apart.

Here's a great tip for you - In order to open the power block you have to use a flat screw driver like you were doing but start at the long seem and as you place the edge into the groove right at the center point - give it a sharp tap with either your hand or a hammer and that will start splitting the two halves apart, After the repair is done just spot glue it back together with crazy glue in the four corners and two in the middle on either side Or - you can glue the entire seem together with crazy glue to make it water tight. hope that helps... Good video... It's great to see that you don't throw the power charger out just because of a minor flaw that is fixable... by the way where did you find the replacement chord, as I need one to fix my Acer swift 1

A little tip regarding opening such cases that worked almost all the time for me - line the grooves with a line of little gasoline ( petrol ), let it dry for a 5 mins or so , and the case comes apart cleanly.

I remember doing exactly the same thing with the Lite-On branded PSU for my brother's Toshiba laptop. Likewise, couldn't get the blasted thing open - later learned that they're ultrasonically welded shut!

That would explain it. If necessary I could have opened it with a saw, but extending the cable was a better solution. I didn't want to buy some no-brand replacement from China, on safety grounds.

Use gasoline to open glued AC laptop adapters. Just apply small amount to the seam via syringe and wait a little. I used Flux-Off spray for it: lenovo AC adapter was openned without problems)

Some time ago, I was waiting after another customer in a repair shop and was astonished how the technician did open the case swiftly in a moment, to change the cable as you did, and also replace a fuse. He told me after that, as they are welded with ultrasonics, is no use using spudgers or screwdrivers or even knifes or Dremel with circular cuttings. He secured lightly horizontally the case in a vise, and with a screwdriver with planar point according to the groove between the 2 halves of the enclosure, he just hammered in 2 or 3 places of one side ( 2 in the ends ) with a firm hit. Then, if needed, put the case vertical and did the same on one end only. At last, with bare hands, he opened the case as a book. Damage was minimal. When he finished the repair, he used Loctite only in the corners and in the center point of the longer side. He told me that if the case was bigger, I should add more points.

That technician also told me that his clients do not accept gracefully a joint in the middle of the cable, for that seems to them as poor or not professional. Besides, that will be one more place with inherent weakness. If the replacement is shorter, he duly tells them before beginning, seeking their confirmationnn to proceed.

In this case, a shorter cable would have been unhelpful. Some power supplies can be split apart, but I'm told that this one is ultrasonically welded shut.

What is that orange black tool called? Wire stripper? Can I have the brand and model?

Mine is branded Splinktech which is a real brand name, but an eBay search for SELF-ADJUSTABLE AUTOMATIC CABLE STRIPPER will show lots of the same product for about £7. It really is the best wire stripper I've ever owned, clever design, solidly built and does a super job on all kinds of cables. Just a bit bulky for confined spaces.

what happen if we don't use sense line voltage and connect the DC connector with only positive and negative wire. I do that and my laptop working properly. Is it dangerous???

Came here, to see what wire has the 19V + and what wire has the 19V - and what the other wire does. I need this supply for an other project, my HP supply (PPP012D-S) has also 3 wires (Black & Blue & White) I just want to know, which 2 wires is the 19V positive, and the 19V negative, so I can use it to charge something else.

You use a voltmeter till it reads what you are looking for. Red positive lead & black is ground. Playing with electronics without a meter or scope is pointless. That's how you blow parts up trust me.

Ahh grass hopper i am the master of bodgery, find a straight kitchen knife and sit it in the slot on the side of the psu box, tap the blunt back of the knife from one end to another, repeat on all sides :-D They will come apart with force, errr i mean gentle persuading. There is an odd 3 pin chip that connects to the i.d wire in the cable, the rest of the psu is a normal switchmode. I am cheaper than you, i slit the old plug and recover the inside metal plug, solder it back on to the chopped cable and slide heatshrink over the plug. Ive done so many over the years, and some have a short where the cable enters the psu.

I would say that you don't have a cable or power supply which is suitable for the job. They should both have the three conductors. Anything else would be risky.

You were lucky there were only 3 wires, I've just bought a new acer chromebook laptop & the charger has multiple output voltages, (5,9,15,20) with a USB type C connector, so that would be a bit fiddly if it ever needed repairs in the future!

I wonder why so many, perhaps it's a way to reduce weight in the laptop by getting more of the charging circuit into the power supply.

@@video99couk Since USB-C is widely used in modern smartphones, laptops and other consumer electronics, this standard can carry many different voltages. The new MacBook chargers initially output 5 volts, but when the charger is connected to the laptop, the laptop "speaks" to the charger to raise the voltage to 20 volts.

Some laptops can carry data over the charge port. Depending on the Laptop it can be a full Thunderbolt 4 connector (however I have also seen Laptops that use it for Power only, USB3 only or USB3+Display port). The protocol those speak is USB-PD that can go up to 20V 5A (100W) but this needs to be negotiated with an ID chip in the cable and the charger before the charger will actually go up to those voltages. The same protocol is used by most newer Android phones and it's luckily a industry standard. So it should be quite easy to find a replacement for these, since basically any new USB-PowerDelivery Phone charger with enough wattage (and voltage profile) can supply the laptop. You can't really bodge a normal power supply to the USB-C connector because not having the negotiation could fry the charge circuit or lead to the laptop refusing to charge. The center pin on some laptops (especially Dell) is actually a bit worse, since they use it for proprietary communication to know the wattage of the charger. If the center pin doesn't supply the right data specific to the manufacturer the Laptop usually doesn't draw the full power from the charger if it even charges at all.

The centre wire is some sort of sense cable, possibly just sensing the voltage that arrives at the computer end. But we can't be certain what it is used for.

I found it on eBay so can't provide the link now. But anyway you need to measure the connector dimensions on your particular laptop and make sure you order a cable with the correct size for that.

It's perfectly safe to do this repair on the low voltage side of a power supply. Splicing the mains input on the other hand would not be safe.
