*** I now carry the 31T sprocket. Text me if you'd like one of your own! 859-200-9646 ****
Today we change the front sprocket on my Harley Davidson Iron 883 to a 31T(tooth).
This turned out to be an incredible mod! This is how Harley should ship the Iron from the factory!
Less RPM's at high speed = less vibration and better MPG!!!
I took her on a 1300 mile trip shortly after this mod and I can't recommend it enough! Videos of the journey coming in the next few weeks!

Purchased the 32 tooth from sirrom1 and have been using it for 1 week now. This is the 2nd best mod after the exhaust. Rides much smoother on the intertate and doesn't loose that much torque (I'm 200 pounds + some luggage) fuel economy is the same as before, adds 10mph top speed and overall engine also sounds better for some reason (lower RPMs I guess). 2017 Harley 48.

I bought a '97 883 a couple years ago. It was a neglected and abused bike; slowly bringing it back to life. Just bought a 31T sprocket, ordering a 2-into-1 exhaust, and dropping in either a Mikuni or Lectron carb over the winter. Can't wait until spring to get it back out!

That's exactly what I was looking for, I've have an sportster superlow from 2012, I mostly drive on highway at 120kmh, that's like 74mph I guess, and I have always feel like if the sportster have 6 gears would be the perfect bike, I will look more in to this mod, thanks for the video. It's the sensor taking the speed from the sprocket? That's why the inaccurate readings on speed? Greetings from Spain.

I don't know if they changed anything from 2010 to 2014. But my 14 has a tach and I've done a bunch of 700 miles days. Kinda planning a 1000 mile day for the fun of it this summer. My 14 doesn't buzz at all and loves 80-85 mph. I bought it new and have 50,000 on it now.

I thought about changing the front sprocket on my 2005 1200R to the European part, but then belt availability crept into my head and I left it alone. Good thing. When the original belt failed at 74,000 miles it took my dealer two weeks to get one. The idea of having to wait until a belt shipped from Europe isn't a good idea. 75 mph is 3500 rpm, a little busy, but not excessive. The biggest issue at sustained high RPM is increased oil consumption due to the design of the air cleaner.

This modification is a LOT cheaper than buying a 6-speed gear cluster (for Sportsters) from Baker Driveline. From what I've heard as of Feb. 2021, Baker might have dropped the 6-speed gear cluster (for Sportsters). This is a very informative video. You're right -- a taller front pulley should have been added in the production 883 Sportsters.

From what I've read, the pre-2004 Sportster transmission could be replaced without taking the engine out of the bike. 2004-up the engine must be split to replace the transmission. Definitely a step back.

I put a Hammer 1250 kit on my '06 XL1200R as the pistons weigh about midway between the 883 and 1200 pistons - right about the weight the crankshaft is balanced for. I alsofitted a 32 tooth tranny pulley and the cruises at95 @4000 rpm... it'll do 100mph in third as I have ported the heads,changed cams along with other things!

Great video, man! I've had *3* 883's and a 1200. I still have one of each, and I've been trying to decide which one to sell. I always wished for a sixth gear for my 883's. The 1200 is geared taller and does better on the highway. So I think I'll do this mod to my 883 and sell the 1200. I'm 190# and I have *never* had to use full throttle on any of my 883's. They keep up with traffic just fine, and will cruise all day at 80 mph - *if* you hands can take the buzzing ;-) It's funny to think that the Sportster used to be considered a full-size motorcycle. Now, it seems kind of dinky. I think H-D geared the 883 down to account for two lard-ass Americans riding on it. But honestly, the Sportster is not really a "two adult" motorcycle. Like you admit, it's kind of a small motorcycle by comparison to other modern bikes. Maybe it was meant for two skinny college kids from the 1950's, but not two average American Walmart shoppers. Anyway, thanks for the video!

I did my 2009 883 Custom. 60 mph is now 65 mph. I like it. Here is what HD says about pulley upgrades "At 70 MPH, each tooth is worth approximately 3 MPH. Instead of 70 you'll be at 73 MPH (+i tooth), 76 MPH (+2 teeth), 79 (+3 teeth), 81 (+4 teeth) for the same engine RPM as the original pulley at 70 MPH."

Plenty of torque to spare, this actually makes my bike faster through all the gears. I weight 240 lbs and it still has plenty torque after this upgrade. I think the 31T is good to go, I caution you from trying the 32T as the belt may not be big enough.

Looking to get the 30tooth for my 883(with the 1250 hammer kit) did your top speed increase noticeably? I’m cruising at 70-75 comfortably but I’m looking for more, also did your lower gears get a bump also?
@tkdriven6077
@tkdriven6077 3 жыл бұрын
I’d say it’s a few MPH off, and it gets further off as the speed increases. At 70mph on the Speedo now, I’m probably more like 74-76. Funny story, and you can see in the other vids, my dads gold wing reads a little slow and now I read a little fast. So we just assume it’s somewhere right in the middle haha. * I misread your question, lol. I dont know if the final top speed increased(it must have) cause Ive never topped it out. And I'm sure the lower gears each have slightly higher final drive, if youre revving them high enough to notice.👍

fernando...if the belt is rubbing the sprocket case or rins towards the trans housing case....you have not aligned the belt properly...its VERY critical that the 2 threaded adjusters at the rear axle HAVE to be adjustered the same and equally..or the belt will not run true on the sprockets (front or rear)

With the pulley being splined to the axle there was really no need for harley to engineer left hand thread. Also, applying a heavy torque on this nut is pointless. It simply needs to line up with the keeper snugly. With the keeper on that nut is not going anywhere.
