God, what a blast from the past. Used to watch this before going to school - I live in the Scottish highlands and going to school meant a half hour bus ride through the hills and glens on a double decker bus. Was a pain in the arse and having a giggle at the BB before leaving the house definitely made the mornings a wee bit better.

Chris Evans was both a blessing and a curse to The Big Breakfast. It revolved around him so much that it was basically The Chris Evans Show. Yes, there was other very strong talent involved. But he was at the core of it. When he left, the problem was how to sell a product that had become The Chris Evans Show without its core ingredient. And I do rate most, if not all, his replacements highly. The problem was not so much with who they had in the role, but with the one person they didn't. Which was why a large portion of the audience switched to Radio 1, when they signed up Chris Evans in direct competition with The Big Breakfast. There was really very little that they could do about the situation. The 1996 relaunch, although not initially well received, was ultimately successful in making the show move on from Chris Evans and become all about the new faces on screen. But history repeats itself, and it then fell into the trap of then becoming The Johnny Vaughan Show. Which was fine while it lasted, three golden years with him at the helm. But it ultimately killed the show, as it couldn't quickly enough reinvent itself once again to suit the next generation of hosts. The heavy, perhaps sometimes over reliance on the male host of the day, was both the success and failure of The Big Breakfast.

Yes both Chris Evans and Johnny Vaughan are extremely good at their profession, but in their cases that comes with a need to be in control. I think many people don't realise or remember just how good a tv presenter Chris Evans is/was (plus producer/writer etc). He is an extremely talented media person; the likes of whom barely exist today, sadly. Btw I've seen loads of your BB videos recently and thank you for uploading so many memories (and footage I've never seen). That show was pretty amazing and I grew up with it, like many of the commenters, when I was going to school. They actually came to my village once! I've been particularly enjoying Zig and Zag again recently. Zig is so funny and even though I'm a fully grown adult now, I still find them genuinely hilarious. The constant risky nature of the live BB shows was really something we'll probably never see again. Having worked in media I can see how much of a blast it have been to work on this show, albeit it exhausting.

To hear Chris Evans making fun of Radiohead and saying "the kids love em" was a shock to the system 😆
