This was definitely symptomatic of a big issue of this era of KZfaq. Guys who got their start doing funny stuff all of a sudden thought cracking jokes was beneath them and went full dramatic with their once comedic series, bloating them with plot, lore, and I am 14 and this is deep style edgy philosophizing. Edit: sorry, I didn't know editing my comment for clarity would get rid of your heart, Loli. XD

The one thing I will always give Doug is that nothing, not even his worst stuff, ever feels cynical. Compare him to Linkara and you can tell that Doug genuinely enjoys what he does and puts passion into everything, even though it mostly ends up awful. On a site full of Jim Sterlings and MovieBobs, that is surprisingly rare to see.

That's why I don't understand why people shit talk Doug Walker so much. It's almost as if people are ashamed that he was an influence when he was a massive influence on a lot of people and people hate it. He has some ridiculous opinions (I still stand firm that he nor his brother truly get why Last Action Hero is awesome), he's not a good actor, writer or director but at least he has passion, cares about what he's doing and takes everything in stride. Linkara is literally the antithesis of Doug Walker.......and I mean that in terms of the actual human being in personality. Lupa is another garbage person.

It's because Doug thought he was better than his creation and that he was a brilliant comedy writer, as well as Alpha Nerd. Watch his game show or Demo Reel. It's fuckin' atrocious. Worse yet, there was no control over his worse excesses. There are more skits than editorial content on his reviews. That's become the tipping point for most creators, from RTMM, to Joe, to Spoony. Even worse, it's given them and the channel's contributors ego trips the size of planetary bodies. Linkara, Joe, and Lindsay in particular have become nauseatingly preachy and believe themselves arbiters over opinions and content. Had Doug had some balls and leadership ability, they'd still be a community today instead of being the blueprint and stereotype of the KZfaq Creator arc.

I don't think Doug is incompetent. At least, that's not his biggest issue. It seems he just can't adapt creatively speaking. His writing and humor is very one note, and that can be a problem if you're planning to make a living as a content creator. But the passion about the media he talks about is there. It would've been acceptable in the early days as there wasn't much competition around to dry up Doug's potential audience. But as years go by and more people step up to try the snarky/angry reviewer bit. People will take what Doug did and do it better. Further making the flaws in his content glare out even more. The movies are laughably bad. Even by amateur standards. But I'll give Doug some credit for the passion behind it. Even if it was shit, he saw it through and gave something back to his fans. Something Spoony could learn how to do in between his bouts of binge drinking and bumming off his patrons. (Whatever is left that is...) I'm not a Nostalgia critic fan by any means. But I do wish Doug the best. He doesn't deserve to crash and burn unlike the sleazebag trash he was surrounded by.

My understanding on why they stayed with Blip so long was they had more lax restrictions on what they can show, say, and still get a paycheck. Which worked in Brad's favor as he tended to make videos about old exploitation videos that would absolutely cause issues with KZfaq's monitization, as well as Benzaie when he had GameFap, where he reviewed Hentai. While everybody was having issues with DMCAs and restrictions on KZfaq, they didn't have those issues on Blip. What eventually happened with Blip, they got bought by Maker and they decided they had new restrictions on who and what could be posted on there so Channel Awesome contributors had to come to KZfaq. The thing with Maker buying it was weird because they just shut down the site 2 years later.

Awesome Video, AlmightyLoli. If anything, I feel bad for Doug, the person, not the character of the Nostalgia Critic. He tried to branch out, and he was pushed back into the role to pay the bills, Now he’s trapped. And You know what, I honestly like him when he isn’t a character, his normal Doug reviews make me happy since they are honest. From what I can tell from the people that followed in Doug’s footsteps, they clearly wanted to do this for clout and money, to ride the coattails of a popular person. And to be honest, let them be forgotten by us, it would be the ultimate justice for us.

I really don't buy in the "Doug is trapped in his own cage" narrative, specially after seeing that it started with CTC related people. I'd say even his NC videos have improved a little. They have more elements from his more down to earth reviews like the Disneycembers and similar and not much screaming. Just skip the weird sketches and you have an alright review. His Anastasia video is actually pretty good. Thankfully there's only one skit at the beginning instead of through out the video.

This is one of the few videos about this topic that doesn't take the accounts in the "Not so Awesome" document at face value, which is honestly refreshing. Like when you zoom out and see where in the early mid 2010's a bunch of marginally talented wannabes who believed they'd "hacked" the world, to work their dream jobs of trying to tear down decades old movies and tv shows until it came time for them to try to "outdo" the very things they were criticising, was a cautionary tale (literally none of them were competent enough to write) is the sort of poetic irony that makes "hating the haters" so addictive. While all the horror stories about what went on behind the scenes can't honestly be 100% true, for instance (aside from being somewhat unpleasant to look at) I refuse to believe Mike Michaud is the Machiavellian mastermind with one hand on the CA purse strings and the other up Doug's ass. Nor do I think the Channel Awesome anniversary films are movies, they're internet videos; and Doug thinking he could stage this grand exit, that it would be noticed by Hollywood and he'd be discovered as a diamond in the rough genius is the kind of hubris and stupidity that's doomed him to his fate but launched the careers of thousands of KZfaq commentary channels.

Ngl, this was the film stream that I think got me joining your crew, and I'm pretty thankful. That said, maybe my brain is fried, but the heavy plot doesn't feel that convoluted to me considering a lot of the Channel Awesome films are callbacks to other references made in the past. Other than that, considering my knowledge of the old is not that well preserved or I didn't watch everyone but heard of them secondhand, maybe some of the references may fall flat on me. (Also, Linkara's ship in the movie is actually formerly the ship of his main villain at the time Lord Vice, which he took over after beating him and I think installing an AI he called Nimaway in order to keep it running as well as making sure there were no failsafes Vice put in in order to destroy the ship. Think it was called Comicron 1 or that was the second ship's name). In any case, I hope you have fun doing the Atop the 4th Wall Movie, because that one is the culmination of all the Lore at the time I assume. Haven't seen it, but I recall dude was promoting it a lot after certain events had transpired in his AT4W universe.

After his departure at Channel Awesome, he _really_ loved shitting on Doug in various tweets (usually various ways to assure the internet that _Linkara_ is the superior reviewer/director/writer/actor, because the dude's ego knows no bounds and he _loves_ lavishly praising himself), and yet _his_ movie makes no sense without knowledge of Doug's _worst_ movie. And all so he could keep his precious MechaKara continuity or something.
