Wish is a 2023 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn (in her feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, based on a story conceived by Lee, Buck, Veerasunthorn, and Moore, and produced by Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster-Jones, with Lee and Don Hall serving as executive producers. The art style combines computer animation with the look of Disney's historical hand-drawn animation. The film stars the voices of Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, Angelique Cabral, Victor Garber, Natasha Rothwell, Jennifer Kumiyama, Harvey Guillén, Evan Peters, Ramy Youssef, and Jon Rudnitsky.

Hey Doug! I know this comment looks long but this movie feels like something that was written by studio notes, saying "Guys, people have been complaining about twist villains, so that has to be a no-go for this one. We have to make sure the audience knows from the beginning that he's the bad guy!" And they didn't put any thought into how to make a real interesting villain with an actual motivation for where his anger comes from. And yeah, let's have the same "funny" sidekicks that Disney's been pumping out since Frozen. That's the biggest insult to me, is that ever since Tangled, Disney has been trying to make their fairy tales have the same humor as Shrek. Shrek is now over 20 years old and it's still remembered and quoted because it *wasn't* made by Disney. And Disney thinking they're gonna blow us away and surprise us with this humor that's 20 years old and think that this is gonna be a classic, it really shows me how out of touch they are and how unwilling they want to try something that's really artistically pleasing. And that's why I want to hear more of the animators and artists at Disney Animation because I'm sure they would love to make a 2D film. I'm not saying all of them, I don't want to overgeneralize. But don't you guys agree that the artists and animators that come to Disney want to create something that's timeless and beautiful to look at? I'm really insulted that Jennifer Lee suggests "2D animation limits camera movement." I personally don't think 2D Animation can "limit" anything. I'm finding out more and more that all the classic Disney hand-drawn films from Snow White all through the decades until 2011's Winnie the Pooh are the films that I will always love and hold near-and-dear and will continue to dissect them and recreate my own drawings of all their 2D films for years to come. I know this is a hot take that Pixar fans will hate me for, but I've grown really bitter against Pixar and computer animation in general, because that's what killed 2D and why we're stuck with this bullshit excuse that "2D limits camera movement." There's nothing new that computer animation can add. Once you've broken all the technology records, what else is there to conquer? 2D Animation doesn't need to be innovative in technology to be timeless, it has to be entertaining and original and enjoyable for years. Here's an idea that can really shake things up for Disney to make another great film: Disney really needs to look at the Spider-Verse films and try to make their own kind of Disney-Verse film. And I don't mean that like the Dark Universe or the Once Upon a Studio special, I don't mean have every single individual character. First you need to find a story that could be told even better with a handful of Disney characters that team up and work off each other with their differences but also their similarities. Just an idea, I can further explain if anyone wants to reply.

Wish is a great example of how corporate meddling can break a movie until it becomes an empty shell of what it could be. We could have had a shapeshifting wish granter that can talk, a Disney villain power couple, and an actual 2D animated Disney movie after so long. These were all innovative ideas for Wish all thrown off because Disney wanted to stick to their formula without the substance that made it work in the past.

Why else were Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd successful Hollywood stars from the Silent Era and continue to be enduring?

8:25 The movie you're describing was the aborted "The Search For Mickey Mouse". It was supposed to be their 50th feature, before Tangled replaced it. In it, Mickey got "mouse-napped" by an unknown force, and Minnie hired Basil of Baker Street (from The Great Mouse Detective) to help track him down. Along the way, they would encounter characters from every Disney movie, which sounds like an AWESOME premise.

IT could even fix the weird set up where the magic doesn't seem to be hurting anyone but then the sorcerer just starts acting like a straight up villain later- There are plenty of ways to play it too, have them both be sympathetic but flawed in ways that make them the antagonists, like the queen supports the practice of destroying the wishes for the sorcerer to have power, because he uses that power to help out in other ways (maybe the nation has never had a famine or such due to that magic) and the sorcerer is caught up in being beloved by the people so he doubles down on everything because if the wishes weren't forgotten, or he put all his efforts into granting all the wishes, he fears he would fall short or lose the love of the people. You could have one be outright more evil than the other, but they both know the score, instead of the villany being hidden from the queen she goes along with it for the greater good, and provides a opportunity for the sorcerer to have a believable redemption, or vice versa and the queen is using the sorcerer for his power and him decideing to be more ethical with his magic either drives her to further villainy and grabing power herself (via the star?) or also opening her to redemption. Or you play it to the hilt and they are both evil, which you could have them be different flavors of evil, like the queen is better at quietly managing things and thus becomes a surprise villain because the bombastic sorcerer was grabbing all the attention, or have one of them turn on the other leading to a more complicated climax or even one teaming up with the heroes to stop the other. I haven't seen the movie, when I first saw previews I thought it would be a sad flop as disney failed to do something interesting, and devolved it to talking animals and pretty animation with no substance, and later got kind of interested, but avoided the bigger trailers because they just spoil too much of the movies nowadays. I am disapointed that my initial feelings fell short and Disney not only failed to live up to their potential, but did so while clearly showing the concept could work, and filling it with half assed references and shoddy musical numbers, apparently.

I think the biggest problem with Wish, is that in trying to be the film that celebrates the Disney Centennial (which is certainly going better than poor Warner Brothers' Centennial) it instead celebrates the CORPORATION'S centennial. Not the STUDIO'S centennial. The references are just from the more popular movies, or ones that had an impact, such as Asha's friends being a reference to the Snow White dwarfs. Whereas Once Upon A Studio is a celebration of ALL of Disney's history. The good, AND the bad. And that's what makes it feel much more genuine.

The predominant criticism I've seen of this film is that the villain's evil plan....isn't evil. It's actually a very good lesson that kids need to learn: not every wish SHOULD come true, and most wishes are better granted by working hard to earn them. Maybe you could justify it by saying that a single person shouldn't be the judge of who's wishes to grant, but they didn't seem to do that from what I understand: the sorcerer king was actually pretty responsible with the power. There are other criticisms that seem to stem from them basically forgetting basic lessons in animation as well, but I'd 1) need to see the movie, and 2) need to know the first thing about animation to comment on them, so I'll just leave them on the table.

Well, minor spoiler, but one thing that struck me as weird was that out of nowhere, the Sorcerer King basically blurts out only he is allowed to use magic. Like... ANY magic. And what bothered me is, this is the first and only time we hear of this. Do the people in the kingdom know of this? Is it a law? It's never addressed and honestly it's probably because this sort of thing would probably be a huge red flag if they made it clear from the outset "Come to the kingdom ruled by a wizard who grants wishes, but don't even think of learning any magic (or using magic if you already know it) or into the dungeon you go!"

This. Absolutely this. Everyone in his kingdom was there voluntarily. He found an island, built a kingdom, and people came to live under his rule. In fact, if the king had be up front about the idea that not every wish could be granted to his subjects, I'd imagine a lot of them would still be willing to give up a wish for the change of living in a kingdom without the turmoil, strife, and violence Magnifico had to face before he started his own kingdom.

I'm glad Disney at least put a real villain in their film again, and Chris Pine does a good job voicing him, but man, I wish he was written better. My main complaint with Magnifico is they wanted to have it both ways-for him to be both a completely irredeemable sinister villain harkening back to classic Disney AND a relatable tragic backstory villain who thinks he’s doing the right thing like with their more modern stories. That’s why his transformation to full villain seems so sudden-because they wrote him to be two completely opposite things and he has to quickly switch over from one to the other before the runtime is up.

That's my feelings too. If they had him be like Frollo or Scar from the beginning, or had him be fully tragic, then he might've been a better villain. It really feels like they were going for tragic when somebody kicked down the door and told them all that the people wanted a real evil villain, and they couldn't be arsed to rework what they'd done. A better idea I had is that they could've had a brother who tried to take control of the wishes. Magnifico keeps power because he think he knows best, while his brother wants the power to be all-powerful. Asha unleashes him because she thinks he'll be on her side, only to have to work with Magnifico to stop the evil brother. It would also serve as a clear message that not all wishes are good.

(6:01 - 6:07) What Doug said there is a theory of what I thought the movie's moral was trying to say: You may not get the wish you wanted the way you want it but do not lose the heart, passion or faith that made that wish - do not lose your own individuality. Sort of similar to how Disney takes someone's good ideas and kind of half-ass them a little bit to a point it looks like they cared so little about the final product.

That's only because Disney upper management changed the script. Almost all the animators have complained about how the project was ruined by those decisions. The movie was originally going to be done early with maybe a few touchups before release. Instead they were made to heavily change most of it which I think is part of the reason to me at least why it looks like the animation isn't finished not to mention all the other things I might have willingly ignored if Disney hadn't been trying to shove them down my throat consistently for the past few years. All the animators wanted to make something amazing and instead they were forced to change it into something they hate and now many or most are being fired.

I was thinking this too. Like a “How WISH could have been better” or something. Like if it was a film to tie all the Disney animated films together with more impact but also having its own story. Like I heard Magnifico gets trapped in a mirror (spoiler warning?) and therefore maybe he was the magic mirror in Snow White and so on and so forth. And maybe the fanscription could even use any of the scrapped concepts that didn’t make it in the film; ie the star being a shape shifter and/or love interest for Asha, Magnifico and his wife being both villains, etc. Go all spiderverse and kingdom hearts on us even. Whatever they do, a fanscription for the 100th anniversary film would be an interesting one.

The twist you were looking for is that the movie implies every other Disney movie is a reuslt of a wish made in this one. So Peter wishing people could fly creates the film Peter Pan and the Goat wishing for a city for animals creates Zootopia. (There is also a scene where Magnifico directly seems to be watching the events of Peter Pan, Marry Poppins, and Little Mermaid in the wish bubbles) So that addresses your complaint, but then critics lambast it for setting up a Disney multiverse and not everything needs to be a multiverse nowadays so the movie loses either way. Also seprate from the above connections, the movie is implied to be a prequel to Snow White with the seven friends being the ancestors to the seven dwarfs and Magnifico becoming the Magic Mirror that will be placed in the dungeon to be used by the Evil Queen.

There was a scene where the townspeople were asking the King about their wishes. Stuff like "what if our wishes change?" or "why do we only get one wish?" Instead of it being a comedic moment, it could have been something the movie explored. What if one of the dwarf stand-ins had multiple wishes, but didn't share because they thought it would have been "selfish?" It's implied that the king didn't share his past with most of his subjects. What if he did, and that discouraged anyone from trying to fulfill their wish themselves? It's nice that they implied at the end that you can't always fulfill your wish by yourself; you might need the help and support of your friends, family, and community to make it happen. But what about when your dreams don't come true? They really could have done something with that "Sleepy" character. There's also a slight undertone that capitalism might be stopping a lot of these people from fulfilling their dreams. Oh, but Disney could never. A Disney property would never go too far into territory like that.

I finally know how to express my feelings on Disney because of this review. Disney is like a gold mine. In the 90's all the way to the mid 2010's it was bustling and busy and you were finding "gold" left and right. But today it's a depleted gold mine. Something happened, I don't know what but something and while you do find some gold every now and then maybe a little chunk, you mostly come back with just stone( bad or mid content). And that's Disney today. It's a gold mine that can't produce gold. Now either we need to wait and keep digging and hopefully we strike a new deposit... Or maybe the cave (Disney) is all out of gold to give.

There's an exchange in the movie that Magnifico has with Asha after she says she lost her dad. "When I was young, I too suffered great loss." "I didn't know that. I'm sorry." "My entire family. Our lands were destroyed by selfish, greedy thieves." With the way this line is written, I couldn't confidently say one way or the other if it meant his family died or not. Either way, this backstory is then forgotten about, with the rest of the movie having him lean into a narcissist angle. Was there a point where his love for power overtook his fear of tragedy? Was he faking his backstory to appear sympathetic? It doesn't surprise me that he wasn't well-received, despite being the studio's response to people asking for a new character that would fit on the Disney villain roster.

The fact that the main showstopper of a song, the theme of this film, This Wish, was written by a pop song writer well before anyone even knew what the story was going to be about or before the script was even *written* really speaks volumes about how meddled with this film was. The songwriter probably didn't know what the plot was or who Asha was going to be. but was required to write an "I want" song that sounded grand and epic, hence why we got so many awkward lyrics in "This Wish". The Frozen 2 documentary on Disney+ must've exposed so much more cracks in the current WDAS system than they likely thought when they put that out.

My idea for what they could’ve done for Wish If you’ve seen the movie, you know that it’s filled with references to other Disney movies, most of which not adding anything to the story and is shoved in your face. What I think they should’ve done is instead of outright referencing something, they put it in the background. I.e. their version of A113 or the Luxo ball. They do this ONCE for every single animated movie they produced throughout the film and maybe even do it in chronological order from their release (for example, the start of the movie would have a background reference to Snow White and the end of the movie would have one for Strange World). This way, the references don’t take away from the movie and you could even have fun looking for these easter eggs. It’s a win for everyone: we get a better movie and Disney gets more money since people are more likely to rewatch it due to the fun of finding these references.

I wholeheartedly agree that the core idea here is positively *bursting* with potential, and that Disney just completely pussed out, at least based on everything I've heard. A story about a once-noble king who was slowly corrupted by his ability to pick and choose which magical wishes he granted and the young girl who initially wants to grant everyone's wishes and then has to follow a similar learning arc to the king *without* becoming greedy, cynical, or corrupt could be *amazing.* The suspicious cynic in me wonders if Disney didn't puss out because actually committing to the bit would've risked communicating to the audience that some wishes shouldn't or can't come true (which kind of spits in the face of Disney's vibe) or that the audience should reclaim their wishes by, like, eating Bob Iger.

The fact the songs are giving every note a syllable actually makes the lyrics in the Spanish version (which I saw courtesy of TheaterEars) flow very well. Plus I can understand how guarding everyone’s wishes can make a guy slowly descend into madness, as I’m dealing with mental health myself. Also the animation style is new and I can tell they were experimenting with it. Either they improve it for next time or abandon it altogether, we’ll see.

A thin plot combined with paper thin characters trying to adhere to the fairy tale formula so hard it reminds you that the studio is not the same it was before. But in this case, every step of the way feels compromised, and all it points that the filmmakers needed more time to make this. For me, I’d take The Black Cauldron, which I feel is severely underrated, over the mediocre Wish any day. The Black Cauldron, in spite of its flaws, at the very least attempted to have a more serious, dark tone, without overindulging into being mean-spirited, had likeable characters, beautiful animation, decent humour, and had one HELL of a nightmare inducing villain, The Horned King! But Wish had bland characters, a storyline that had no tension, surprises or anything challenging, the humour was overly childish, and the villain, who initially could’ve been interesting, they just made him a boring, unfunny “I want to get power over the wishes for unexplained, vague reasons!”

"My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" did an episode set in a town led by a seemingly benevolent pony who takes away everyone's special talent so they can all be "equal." They do behave in that more subdued manner that Doug describes, like, you can tell something is missing from them. I haven't seen "Wish" yet, but it sounds like that episode might have done the concept better.

4:53 The point of showing the other Disney characters at the end was clearly missed by almost everyone. SPOILER ALERT!!!! When Asha explains why the star had to leave soon, she says, "You have to go, so you can be there for others to wish upon." Then the star performs fireworks over the kingdom and before waving good bye to the audience, creates the "Mickey Firework" and classic the Disney Logo. So to recap, the Mickey firework, the characters outlined in star's dust and what Asha said, all point to the biggest easter egg of the film. The big wisher himself Walt Disney and the company he and his brother built to grant more wishes and dreams.

I was going to watch this movie over Thanksgiving break but didn’t because of scheduling issues (namely me not wanting to see it on opening day and having to travel back to school on Black Friday) and so the time I would have spent watching Wish was instead spent on playing Bloodborne. Smart move apparently giving the verbal massacres I’ve seen about this one! I’m probably going to check it out when it comes out on Disney+ so I can develop my own opinion but that’s it.

I wouldn’t say that. I think people are over thinking and overlooking what it is they truly want and even already have. It is clearly establish why magnifico changes dimes, because he is challenged by Asha, and no one else has ever done that before on account of how he runs things. There’s a first time for everything,I can’t believe that Doug and everybody else seems to be easily overlooking that. Again, the biggest problem is audiences are expecting too much to become conditioned to a certain way to think or even not think toward something that they’re missing something that even though it may not be the best, is still overall as more than good enough for what it is. It’s actually my favourite movie of the year! :-)

Here’s how I would have changed it. 1). Make Asha be a run away orphaned (as a kid) to now being a princess in a kingdom who doesn’t believe in wishing upon a star until the end of the movie. She can come across power from a meteorite from space or a magical crystal that she finds and that convinces King Magnifico to “take care of her”. Boom, powerful princess. 2). Instead of making King Magnifico a sympathetic and cartoony character, let’s make him a full blown Disney villain. I am thinking of him being Judge Frollo if he would to have the power of sorcery. He can be one of the most powerful sorcerers with the limits that he has One of the flashbacks scenes can be Asha being unconscious near the meteorite and was planning to kill her so that there would no survivor, but he didn’t since he sense some magic within her and could led him into greater power. Boom, memorable villain. 3). Instead of having a 100 year old man (GET IT) who wants to wish to become a musician or something, he can be a butler to King Magnifico and he was order to take care of Asha while he studies the meteorite. In present day, Asha can overhear the butler talking to his wife on a wish and ghat he’s afraid to ask so Asha goes and ask her father about it. Boom, better character. 4). Disney canceled the idea of making a villain duo with King Magnifico and Queen Amaya. Let’s use that, but make her as a surprise villain. We can see both the king and queen being madly in love with each (like a Gomez and Morticia Addams) with one loving one for power of sorcery and other for power of rulership. One of the songs can be a duet while the soldiers hunts down Asha for a crime that she didn’t commit (like attempting to murder the queen). Boom, powerful couples. 5). Instead of having 7 friends (DID YOU GET IT), how about reducing to 2. One that Asha befriend in the orphanage and the other (like Dahlia or Simon) in the palace. If they want to make a 7 dwarfs reference (because it’s the 100 anniversary of Disney), you can have Dahlia mentioned that she learned that pacific thing from her 7 siblings. Boom, lesser human characters and more memorable characters. 6&7). The star can stay and the goat is debatable. It’s not a perfect change to the Wish movie but it’s better than the final product.

Also, when even Doug, who often tries to treat products as fairly as he can and has rarely hated anything since the start of the decade, finds it hard to say anything nice about Wish, I'm convinced that Animat is too forgiving towards the movie. Maybe it's because Disney is one of his favorite animation studios, but it speaks a lot that he's one of the only prominant content creators with a very positive opinion on the movie. If any other studio produced it, whether it be Dreamworks, Illumination, or Paramount, he would've probably noticed the flaws more and been annoyed by the safe storytelling and overreliance on easter eggs.

I'm split on this movie and on one hand I like what this movie was trying to be, a celebration of Disney's 100th birthday, and having a movie centered on wishing, and this movie showed that in 2023, Disney is more about money grabbing, franchise-ruining, and creating controversies instead of creative storytelling. I think this movie would have worked a lot better if the songs were written and sung better, the hero was not so quirky and cheery, the villain at first was a breath of fresh air after so many lame twist villains and no villains but a traditional Disney bad guy with a unique agenda. The king also would have not been the only main villain but the queen could have been evil as well, I mean you can still make them evil but at least give them some sympathy like they were trying to do here but go all out. The Billy Goat sucked with Alan Tudyk's voice and yes he's quite a voice actor and has proven to be a great Disney mainstay but I wish they either A: have the goat not talk at all, or B: have a child actor to voice the goat since he is about a few weeks old and not have a deep grown up voice that so does not match the character. The Star I had no problems with since he's the best thing about this, but there were a few characters I wish were more distinct and the seven friends of Asha, the ones based off of the seven dwarfs only they're human and they are a mixed of male and female and all the races and it does remind me of how the dwarfs were gonna look like in the god-awful Snow White remake but they're not the worst things about it they just don't have fleshed out or original personalities. The thing with Asha being this Fairy-Godmother figure and wearing the cloak eerily similar to the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella was picked up by me early on. The call-backs or references are just not plastered well and Once Upon a Studio did them better. The animation at first I was excited it was going to be a 2-D animated film which we didn't have since Winnie the Pooh (2011) or a fairy-tale in 2-D style since The Princess and the Frog. But when they did this CGI animation which has become standard by now and it looks like a bad blend of 2-D animation it looks really rough but I did like the style of watercolor and had it been in 2-D this would have been kick-ass. The star on the other hand is so well done and looks more hand-drawn than CGI. The pacing was one of the worst I seen in a Disney film and I wish they had found a better editor and the songs could have done a little more work in the sound area but I did enjoy the singing demos from Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine among others and they can pull off the acting and singing when they are given the right stuff to work on and I think they did a passable job here, but the songs again are not ones I would sing let alone many other people would sing or hum in their sleep. Also the story was all over the place and I wish they could have made the wish plot be more about the wishes being stored away and when they feel down that their wishes are not granted they seem to be indifferent towards the situation and they seem to forget it slowly over time until the point the only one who understands it and believes it is the main character and have her and her family and friends try to search for the wishes that they were granted but were never given thanks to the greediness of the royal couple. The tone does have trouble finding itself too and sometimes its hard to stay connected because they can have a mood-swing from out of nowhere and completely make a scene either forgettable or just off. I do agree that this movie should have been big for Disney's 100th anniversary and it was going to have at least one character or reference from Snow White up to Encanto or Strange World and this movie sort of became a shell of its original idea thanks to corporate meddling. It seems as if AI took over this movie and I can definitely see it as a strange mess but it does have a few good elements to it they're just shy of being decent. Overall its kind of bad but not horrible as many people say it is. If it was not for the woke era or Hollywood in shambles that led to the SAG-AFTRA strike this movie would have been worthwhile but I and about 90% of people did not see it that way. But I think this movie was worth seeing on the big screen. I give it a 5/10.

The main problem with the Wish is that it had the potential to be something really great but the final result is.... okay? At best 🤷‍ For example, Magnifico (Magnificent in Italian? Really?🤦‍♀) had the potential to be like Frollo, Gothel or even Ramesses with his pretty good backstory, but all that potential was wasted when they made him a comedic character. Like how am i supposed to take him seriously when he tells all these flat and stupid narcistic jokes and becomes a villain out of nowhere? Hades from Hercules was a good comic villain, but he was like that from the first till the last second of the movie. Frollo is the same - he was cruel and dramatic from the beginning till the finale. Ramesses on the other hand evolved over the course of the film - good at first, but because of various things and events, became bad. What about Magnifico? At first he was introduced as a good king and it looked like Disney was planning to slowly turn him into a villain. But no! They just suddenly made him bad out of nowhere and said he was always bad! wtf? On top of that, his backstory was supposed to make him some king of dramatic character, instead Disney made him a comic villain who tells stupid jokes and sings that cheesy upbeat villain song... 🤦‍♀ How can a film be called good when it changes a course so many times without any need and/or explanation? And the WHOLE film is like that! Like every single aspect! It's just sad to see how many good ideas were grounded here without any decent development😢

I kept thinking we were going to get an explanation for Magnifico’s actions. Like, what was it that happened so long ago that made him want to take everyone’s wishes away? What was his motivation? I felt like he was a potentially sympathetic villain, like a villain who does something bad from a place where they think what they’re doing is the best thing, even if it’s bad. An explanation was there, but we never got it, because he’s just evil and there’s no coming back now? If we were going to stick with the “just a cold straightforward villain” theme, I would have rather liked for someone to ask why he’s doing this, and for him to say why, and then for them to say it’s wrong, and for him to say, oh yeah, I know it’s wrong, but I don’t care. Something like that maybe? I don’t know. Everyone was so happy to trap him away forever and I was like, “hold on, let’s see what he has to say about why he’s doing what he’s doing because there’s an obvious story there that we never bothered to ask about.” And if we’re going for the deep down evil villain that cannot be redeemed, don’t put a sympathetic experience in there as his motivation.

I thought the concepts of this movie was really cool. It’s a villain who literally steals the dreams & potential of his subjects to control them, critiques their inability to realize their dreams alone as he does it. That’s such a good concept for a fairy tale. The execution is terrible. Also imagine if the twist at the end was that Asha really did become the fairy godmother from Cinderella and we were really watching her origin story the entire time? It would make sense that she became a sorcerer but with the opposite approach as Magnifico (instead of granting wishes, she gives people assistance to ultimately achieve their dreams themselves). So much wasted potential
