Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark is the ultimate Broadway bloodbath, an incredibly loose Spider-Man adaptation, and a massive flop. You need to hear about it, it deserves to be remembered.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is a musical with music and lyrics by Bono and the Edge and a book by Julie Taymor, Glen Berger, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, the story incorporates elements of the 2002 film Spider-Man, the 2004 film Spider-Man 2 and the Greek myth of Arachne. It tells Spider-Man's origin story, his romance with Mary Jane Watson, and his battles with the Green Goblin. It includes highly technical stunts, such as aerial combat scenes and actors swinging from "webs".[1]
The Broadway production was notorious for its many troubles. Several actors were injured performing stunts and the opening night was repeatedly delayed, causing some critics to review the "unfinished" production in protest.[2] Following negative reviews, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark suspended performances for a month to retool the show. Aguirre-Sacasa, a longtime Spider-Man comics writer, was brought in to revise the story and book. The director, Julie Taymor, whose vision had driven the concept of the musical, was replaced by the creative consultant Philip William McKinley. By the time Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark officially opened on June 14, 2011,[3] it had set the record for the longest preview period in Broadway history, with 182 performances.[4][5][6]
Critical reception of the opening was better than for the previews, but mixed, with praise for the visual effects but little enthusiasm for the book and score. Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is the most expensive Broadway production in history, with a budget of $75 million. In the week ending January 1, 2012, it held the box office record for Broadway sales in one week, taking in $2.941 million over nine performances,[7] until it was beaten by Wicked at the end of the year, with $2.947 million.[8] The production closed on January 4, 2014,[9] at a massive financial loss.[10]

The one thing I can't get over about this show is something no one talks about. Spider-Man has one of the most iconic theme songs in television history, but when developing this show, no one ever said, "Hey, we show rework the Spider-Man theme song into a Broadway show tune." That easily would have been the highlight of the show.

Generally composers want to leave their own stamp on Spidey's legacy with their own themes which I can understand. At the same time, there is a track in there which serves basically the same purpose as that, and really does beg the question of why they didn't just use that instead as it feels like a knock-off. It's like when cartoons use weird new versions of the birthday song for some reason.

@Channel Pup It's even more glaring when you consider that there are now Addams Family and Spongebob musicals, and they found ways to work those theme songs into the show. The Addams Family incorparates their theme song into the show's overture, and Spongebob has the cast perform their theme song during the curtain call.

I’ve had a poster of Turn Off The Dark on my wall ever since I saw it back in 2013, genuinely blessed to have been able to see it while I was still living in NYC. I was sitting front row in the section called “the Flying Circle” and during the climactic fight with Green Goblin, Spider-Man swung up, landed on a platform directly in front of me, gave the audience a thumbs up, and swung back down to fight Goblin. In that moment suddenly every issue I had with the show disappeared and I was a 9 year old boy in 2002 again watching Spider-Man 1 in theaters for the first time. Genuinely magical. Quality of the show aside, just what an overall moment in Broadway history and even overall comic book history

Finally someone says it! Tbh, this musical was, to me, what the Raimi movies are to a lot of people. I watched it when I was super young, and while it wasn't my first exposure to the character, it was the first time I was really blown away by what could be done with him. I know that in hindsight this musical was a huge mess, but I still love it to death. And unlike the Raimi movies, I can't really return to it to see if it really holds up to my nostalgia. At least unless there's a filmed version that I'm unaware of.

Having seen both versions, I have to say that I love the second version of Turn off the Dark. It’s everything a Broadway show about Spider-Man should be. I loved Reeve Carney as Peter and Jennifer Damiano was a great MJ. However, my favorite cast member Patrick Page as the Green Goblin. He’s super underrated as the character and absolutely delivered the camp and menace needed as the villain. I unapologetically loved the show when I saw the second version.

I mentioned this in a community post… but if there’s one thing I can be thankful about Turn off the Dark doing was getting me into Musical Theatre to begin with. I was always blown away by the set design, fly systems, and technical aspects that it got me into working backstage crew. Alongside with the musical tracks and acting… it also made me want to work in cast as well… that I’m glad this show got me into working in Theatre during High School and College. While not good… I hold Turn off the Dark in my heart

This was quite the topic to unpack for your series Pup! I myself being more of a musical fan than a superhero fan, applaud you for all your dedication and enthusiasm for delving into a topic outside your comfort zone! (And I hope that more theater fans get inspired to check out more of your awesome content!) 1.) More people like Garfinkle, ABSOLUTELY! 2.) I could certainly see a documentary being made to preserve the memory of 'Turn off the Dark'! Or maybe even a "making-of" biopic movie/book, like ‘Ed Wood’ or ‘The Disaster Artist' (even if 'Turn Off the Dark' isn't seen anything of the "so bad it's good" caliber as 'The Room' or ‘Planet 9 From Outer Space’). 3.) Of course Patrick Page is the show-stealer! He is a stellar actor with an amazing resumé under his belt! He's best known for Hades in the Broadway smash show 'Hadestown', but he's played so many other villainous roles onstage! The Disney Broadway fandom perhaps best knows him for performing as Frollo from the stage version of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'! (You should totally have a listen to his cover of "Hellfire"! : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNmHpLCrrbSZdYU.html)

13:39 When you said "Let's raise the other one (eyebrow)" I think it's pretty obvious that that's the queue because that is no such thing as a student that reminds the teacher to hand how homework no matter how smart and/or geeky they are. 15:42 It may be silly but I do like the detail of the comic book captions of Pow when he starts using his powers. It may be a weird comparison but it kind of reminds me of how Miles's thoughts in Into The Spider-Verse only become comic book captions until he gets the Spider-Bite symbolizes how he has become a superhero. 20:03 So the people who made this plat couldn't count... nice to know.

At university I had some obligatory business class, and in the textbook there was a chapter about this musical. The point of the chapter was about knowing how to properly direct employees to achieve the best results. If I recall it right, it said that the director, Julie Taymor, did her best work with someone around to reign in her ambitious plans, but the higher ups for this musical didn't know that and just knew she had done good work in the past and basically let her do whatever she wanted, and that led to it being an over the top, expensive, and dangerous production.

Spider-Man and Theater are two of the oldest loves of my life. I’ve been performing on stage since I was 8 and I’ve been reading/watching Spider-Man even longer. That being said it is very hard for me to hate or even dislike this musical at all. The mere fact that a Spider-Man musical exists at all is so interesting and exciting to me and the combination of the theatrical arts with Spider-Man makes it easy for me to love it. I honestly think this show was way ahead of it’s time, in 2012 audiences we’re adapting to the darker tone of the first TASM film and weren’t ready to see a campy Spider-Man musical. I think in todays pop culture climate with all of the multiverse stuff going on and spiderverse I think audiences would be way more down with this kind of thing. I wish this show was remembered more fondly by the fans because it really was a work of art.
