Short R142 2 train ride (in Car 6334) from Atlantic Avenue to Franklin Avenue on December 27, 2000.

Pretty cool to hear the original announcements, they were updated a few months later and by 2002 all were updated to the ones we have now.

You should do the original 2 train announcements to Flatbush Avenue or the original 5 train announcements to E’chester Dyre.

I love seeing the beginning of the NTT’s. I rode the R142 in September 2000 & I remember seeing how bright & white it was inside lol. I forgot there were no ads & no artwork on the walls on the trains. And the door motors seem a bit faster here. We need those motors on the R142’s now. 20 years later, after a few hiccups, they’re doing fantastic on the road. This was so awesome!

I remembered when the R142/R142a were brand new then, my official first ride on the R142A was in June 2001 on the 6 line on my way to my grandma’s house, months before 9/11. Then later on that year and in 2002 I’ve caught the R142 Bombardier train on the 2 line. In 2000 when I was in my freshman year in high school i heard everyone talking about the new train on the 2, it’s too bad i didn’t ride it in 2000 due to that my parents didn’t allow me to ride on the subway to school. Definitely had a different door motor than the current one, meaning these cars had 3 so far, from my knowledge. This is nice.

They did not have different motors. The motors are the same. The R142s had major teething issues and one of them being the traction motors. The HVAC was much louder drowning out the propulsion completely inside and downing out the first pitch of the Alstom onix outside. By 2003 the R142s was the most unreliable cars in the system, by 2007-2008 all major teething issues were fixed and now present day the R142s are the most reliable cars in the system.

Chao, I’ve subscribed and thanks for posting your videos. I have a couple of videos from that era around 2003-4, but not at the length like yours. Also very interesting to see the time when we still saw R-62A’s on the 3 and the transition of the NTT’s coming in. I deeply miss when we had the R-32’s still based out of Coney Island then.

I love the old and dark strip map of the 2 train. These r142s were band new and fresh in the early 00s. Another fact is that the 2 train was the first line to receive the r142s. Then the 5 was next by the end of 2002 and last was the 4 by 2003 if I'm correct or not.

@Im a Train Fanatic is back The R142A cars entered regular service on the (6) line on July 10, 2000 after several months of testing and the resolving of all issues.

@Im a Train Fanatic is back Oh okay. The REDBIRDS were gone by 2002 on the (2) and (5) trains. That is correct. You are absolutely right about that. In the future the R62 and R62A cars will be replaced by the new R262 in a few years. Let's enjoy the R62 and R62A cars while they are still in service on the (1), (3), and (6) trains.

@Im a Train Fanatic is back What happened to the R142 set at Union Port?? I have another question: Are there still some Redbirds at Union Port yard right now?? Yes I agree. The R62 and R62A trains are very durable and they hardly break down.

Wow, the beginning of the New Technology train era on the NYC subway. The R142/142As were the newest at the time, now the R211s are the newest. This was the beginning of the end for the Redbirds. I was only 4 (almost 5) at the time.

You may or may not know but these cars were being built around the years 1998-2004 and they started revenue testing on July 2000 and entered service in October 2000

TrainTech 21stcentury Cars 6301-6345 and 6351-7120 are shared between the 2 and 5 trains, with 6301-6345 and 6351-6710 based at 239th Street and cars 6711-7120 based at East 180th Street. Cars 6346-6350 were originally 239th Street cars and were also shared between the 2 and 5 but the set was taken out of service after car 6347 caught fire in March on the 2 train.
