There are already plenty of alternate Warhammer fantasy universes: 1) Storm of Chaos: End Times but Chaos is stopped. 2) Age of Reckoning: Archaon isn't a thing and the latest Chaos invasion takes place after a major plague, lead by a Tzeentch Champion. 3) Total War: End Times haven't happened, but might if the player chooses Chaos. There was even an older novel about a Brettonian Knight who got lost in Athel Loren and (because times is distorted there) came out of it after the End Times had happened. The world was ravaged but there was still some life going on instead of... the world literally blowing up.

I actually do love the idea of the badguys winning in a setting, it's not something that happens often enough in fiction and it does make the hero's victory look less earned because you know from the first second the hero will win because it will always happen, the real question is how, how much will they suffer, and did they deserve the win, but with fantasy you have a great setting that was written to the point where entire nations were wiped out in almost as much attention as a race in 40k got to it's destruction despite the fact it was never documented anywhere except for in an interview, and the ones that did get proper lore got things like an assassin killing the high king of the dwarfs, despite the fact that the dwarfs have a great omen about there king's throne being destroyed marking there doom, they should have had the throne suffer a truly devastating barrage of hits from skaven artillery to the point where dwarfs were throwing themselves into the way shield first to protect the entire dwarf race, then finally at the end of the battle the dwarfs recover it, thorgrim wounded severely, countless rats falling off it, and once it's sat down and Thorgrim dies from his many warpstobe wounds, the throne falls apart and calls for every dwarf alive, from the warriors, to the women carrying babies both in them, and on on there back, to March out and settle every grudge they can resulting in many great battles

My biggest problem with the End Times is not that it happened, but *how* it happened. The sheer stupidity of a lot of the choices they made to wrap up Fantasy have eternally soured me on Age of Sigmar, which would be a setting I should absolutely love otherwise. It comes with a baggage that is just too heavy to bear. Edit: If you want to know what I mean, a compilation of choice moments from the Clown Times: half the world unceremoniously destroyed by either Skaven or Grimgor's Waaagh; Skaven actually causing more destruction and carnage than both Chaos and Nagash *combined* (they literally blow up Morisleb, annihilating the entire continent of Lustria!), yet ending up as Archaon's underlings anyway with no explanation; Kislev being destroyed in a footnote, same with Chaos Dwarfs; Bretonnia and Beastmen only getting marginally more screentime than the latter before being destroyed, despite having army books; Skarsnik getting some spotlight and then disappearing forever *because the writer forgot about him*. And my "favorite" one: the entire Elven race uniting behind Malekith of all people, because he was actually the Eternity King, destined to lead all the Elves, all along! However that was just revealed now because Asuryan fucked him... for reasons. And then cursed all the subsequent Phoenix Kings... for reasons. Those reasons being of course incredibly convoluted justifications for this insanely dumb retcon. Everything about the Elves and Malekith is by far the dumbest part of the End Times, and it would take pages to list all the stupid shit that happens there.

My biggest problem with the End Times is that it indeed happened. All the effort into moving the plot forward and making things happen that has gone into AOS could have gone into Fantasy before. The fact that the story is now pigeon-holed into either sticking to the old lore or retconning things means that the writing is gonna be massively out of sync with what the fans already know. This whole "Old World" thing didn't even need to happen. It makes no sense to go back and revive a dead setting to retell old stories, since a lot of the biggest and most important events from the Old World are already known to the community. There's no big, cataclysmic storyline they can pull out of nowhere without people wondering "How did this not get recorded in the world's history?". And if they do do that, well, it'll just be more bad writing.

Malekith being the true king was based af. For starters the title is god damn Phoenix king and you assume it by walking into a magical god fire. Malekith being too stupid or too selfish to burn to death for the Elven race to be reborn as the king was an excellent choice and hill I’ll die on. Irrespective of how it happened it was one of a handful of good ideas but poor execution to be found

I remember seeing this one youtube commenter saying he hated the End Times because he thought the whole point of Chaos was that it would always lose because of its lack of organization. Like he thought Chaos was so self-destructive that it was out of character for them to actually win the setting. I feel like that's just a very bad interpretation of things that makes both Chaos and Order look worse. Like apparently the world was saved from the first Chaos invasion not because of the sacrifices made by Aenaerion, Caledor, Lord Kroak and Grimnir, but just because Chaos stupid.

there's an interesting scene where grimnir mentioned to gotrek that the newly awoken master rune in gotreks axe was capable of killing the chaos gods, it's a shame to me that gotrek replaced grimnir in the chaos realms so late into the timeline and if it happened sooner there might have been a chance for the old world to defeat chaos.. afterall gotrek was thrown out of their realms after slaying anything and everything that came for him in there, to me that says that the chaos gods feared him and that axe

Related question: Why did the Chaos Gods want to destroy the world? I know at least Slaanesh was having fun, but other than Tzeentch, it seems they'd be better off continuing the status quo. Never-ending war and blood for Khorne and an endless cycle of death and decay for Nurgle.

It's never really explained honestly, they're the bad guys, they want to destroy everything ^^' I think it's just how Chaos works, they want to posess all of the world, but doing so will destroy it, because Chaos is immaterial. I agree that an apocalyptic end is the most thematically fitting way to end the Warhammer universe, and I think most people who hate the way it was handled would agree as well. For me, probably the worst crime is age of Sigmar, which feels like backpeddling to me, and it undermines the seriousness of the apocalypse if it is followed up by a very similar setting. It's like when comics keep hyping up the next big catastrophe only to reset the timeline or revive all the fallen heroes or w/e. In that sense I think it would have been wiser to kick the can down the road a bit further, have the heroes defeat Archeon at great cost, permanently changing the setting but still keeping most of it around for further use. Or if you're hell bent on doing the ballsy thing, have a good follow-up plan for after you nuke the world and stick to it, don't try to have your apocalypse and keep your fantasy setting too.

The real problem is that all of this struggle against chaos was reduced to a fight without symbolic meaning and the philosophy was essentially just wallowing in WHFB's own degraded, self-derivative canon. Why would Chaos be inevitable and what does that tell us about existence itself? Good stories say something about the human heart, about society, about nature, or other things that are worth thinking about. The End Times personal stories were corny to the point of terrible cringe, in part because they don't mean anything. It's just smashing your He-Man and Skeletor figures together like a five year old. It's Occidental Dragonball Z: a bunch of cartoon characters screaming at each other and then exploding. But your mention of the new WFRP material really gets at what's good about Warhammer Fantasy, because Cubicle 7 simply has to write better material than the slop that GW put out in the 2010s. They have to do better because TTRPGs simply have higher standards of storytelling.

I had no issue with the end times (it was obvious the world was ultimately doomed), but to be frank I wish they had not been written. Better to be that "next time" sort of story so that we can continue with the general setting. My question is when will we see Old World fantasy novels. I honestly just care about reimmersing myself in the setting I knew and loved. Let's be real, is there anything in AoS novels that comes close to the battle for 8 peaks? I miss it.

Characters making meaningful decisions and sacrifices, there being consequences for their actions etc. is something I really wanna see more of. Kinda like the one between Anakin and Obi Wan, where Sigmar even tries to reason with Archaon or apologizes for not intervening when he needed him most. There’s gonna have to be retcons in order for any of it to make sense with all the new additions. Make room for the demise of all the new stuff, not just breeze past it. And these new additions should not apply to just the end times. Things should be retconned with anything new that’s been added to the setting from Total War and what will come from both it and the Old World in the future. The End Times should be addressed again with all the new additions. Whenever that is. But that’s only off GW is serious about this being the same timeline. If they’re not going to actually take that seriously, they should separate the two and tell new stories. And maybe finally grow some balls to make them have consequences and progression.
@spellbound1875
@spellbound1875 Жыл бұрын
Relevant to remember AoS has already retconned some things in the End Times, though often without really altering the End Times events specifically. The Phoenix Kings for instances were retroactively restored to their 8th edition stance as blessed with Asuryan's power and approval (rather than the End Times assertion they were false kings). Morathi explicitly uses the Divinity of their souls to fuel her apotheosis. GW isn't ever going to change the events of the End Times because it's sort of embarrassing to address but they will happily act as though events were different if it improves the lore. So don't expect them to call attention to it but we'll certainly see subtle changes.

I understood from the start that ET was going to stay canon and I suspect that it will remain untouched for years to come bar some AoS related retcons. Old World will not be that affected by it bar a few allusions to it as most characters are either not currently alive or are in a far earlier part of their story and I doubt we will see stuff that happened after Magnus’s reign. Hold on a sec though. What if it IS like FF7 remake, that's actually a really cool idea. So in OG 7 Sephiroth just straight up won and became a huge part of the lifestream giving him control of people's memories which is how he fucks with cloud. It also gives him control of time and destiny, he can shape them at his will which is why/how he controls the whispers. Remake is Aerith's (who is also in the lifestream but far away from and less powerful than Sephiroth) one shot to change what happened and deny Sephiroth his victory, we don't know how she engineered it to happen but Sephiroth is using the whispers to keep everyone on the same path as OG 7, even reviving Barrett at a time when he wasn't supposed to die, so that he maintains control of the entire planet. I mean it is waaaay more complex but that is enough for us to transfer over to Warhammer fantasy. So for Warhammer, someone in AoS like Sigmar or Alarielle or maybe even Nagash or better yet is Mazda or Lord Kroak a God in AoS? would need to engineer a way to send their future knowing consciousness/memories to themselves in the past long before the ET and from that moment work towards fixing this one thing above all else. Chaos as a whole would also remember what happened originally and would be dead set on trying to keep that course of actions exactly the same. This would be such a cool storyline and would need some much better writing than the ET got but for the most part it would mean you could keep AoS and restore WFB to it's 8th edition state over a period of years and then we just kill Mannfred early or something and everything can be fine no ET victory for chaos.

Dwarves and Elves are on the decline, especially Elves as they're in a perpetual civil war, Lizardmen are but a shadow of themselves since the Old Ones leave the planet, only the humans are more powerful than before. I completely agree. Grimdark is very difficult to do right because it conflicts with the notion of heroic actions. 40k works around this by making everyone commit war crimes, which can get dry pretty quickly. What I like about Warhammer fantasy is the impending doom that is always present in the readers mind. It makes every character tragic because no matter their triumphs, it doesn't matter. Even the Chaos aligned characters become tragic in a way because their struggles are so meaningless. They are just pawns in this big stupid game that ends with the world blowing up. The creeping dread of the End Times is baked into the setting and removing it would remove a layer of complexity to the settings character that I think would be sorely missed!

Being "inevitable" in the story is not the same as inevitable in real life the first is fine as a concept but it doesn't justify the second for me. I understand why they needed a reboot but I don't agree that they needed to kill Fantasy to do a reboot. A proper ending can be satisfying but to kill eveyone off and end the world as a way to discontinue a product left a bad taste for me that I can't get over. It doesn't help that AoS is not for me too many core concepts are really not to my liking I'm glad others like it though. Its a really good point and I hope your right that they can use The Old World to introduce consequential story telling.

I have no issues with the end times in a vacuum. I think it created some pretty cool concepts, the winds of magic being bound to people, vermintide games, the general feel of the world ending is cool and unique, you never really see the heroes lose in these types of things. My issue is how what should have been an alternate timeline/ what-if scenario to explain how aos came about was used to lazily, disrespectfully and without any concern for plot lines that had been developing for years just pull the plug and say "nope, thats gone now lol". Aos is fine, but it is not the same. I like my fantasy settings to feel grounded with rules, I want the hero to be technically able to walk into Mordor, but there to be geographical, theological and practical reasons why they can't, instead of just "space but not".

as someone who has come to enjoy WHFB lore through Total War (and your channel!) I've got the weird perspective of looking back and not knowing how it was at the time The End Times happened, I was aware of it as a 40k fan, but it was mainly just community outcry i'd see at the time. I honestly think all the stories of The End Times are really cool, but certainly agree that everything seemed a bit rushed, in terms that it just felt like characters were dropping like flies. I agree with the sentiment that I hope GW tries it again with a bit more forethought into it, and if I'm honest I think 40k has essentially had it's "End Times" with the psychic awakening and the current Arks of Omen, except without the finality and complete reset of the End Times where the plot lurches forward for a while and then springs to life and takes a huge leap.

Well...for new characters yes there's more freedom. But existing characters cannot die or change at all because they have to be alive and in certain places for when the End Times does happen. It's like making a prequel to a popular movie, there's no tension because we all KNOW that the main characters 100% survives because the original movie happens. So...telling new stories with new characters yes gives GW more freedom. But not at all for already existing characters. Interested in your thoughts on this, Sotek.

I've never understood that argument, yeah Teclis will survive... but how will he survive? THat's the important question ^^ Like if you take Gotrek and Felix, you know that Gotrek and Felix will survive, it's not really the tension, the tension is what are their adventures, how will they survive, what did they fight. If the only interesting question in a fiction was "will this character survive", 90% of fiction would be trash, half of it doesn't even involve risks of death XD

I started playing Warhammer fantasy at the end of 5th/very start of 6th. Otherwise Chaos was a paper tiger. I kinda feel Chaos is overhyped nowdays anyway, but that's a personal thing.

I'm gonna disagree with you on the inevitability of the End Times and that's Chaos should win no matter what in the end. I agree though, that main keynote is that the Old World is doomed with Chaos, but more like not to fall for its forces entirely but to be in eternal stalemate with it. And I mean not in the way as GW usually do, as you described - the events look like thay should mean something and have a huge repercussions, but ends up doing nothing. I see it more like as ever changing switch of the status quo's, with new characters to arise and factions to appear or to transform. Like for example - Chaos are pushing another invasion in Old World, oblitareates Kislev as it is and its remnants move somewhere else (Border Princes for example) and establish a new state, then Empire facing the invasion and in dispairity completely succumbs to vampires and their forces and becoming Vampire Empire but stops the invasion, with Chaos taking Kislev's land entirely still. And if you want pike'n'shot faction to still exist, the remnants of imperials, who disagree with vamps, will form another empire by melding with Estalia/Tilea - it would be a great hommage to Habsburgs also. And at the end of an event we have a huge changes in setting without it being destroyed. And these status quo alterations could be happening on every front with Chaos or other forces of destruction - when Destruction wins something, Order wins something somewhere else and vice versa.

Nah, what GW should do is to give Magnus the Pious a vision of the End Times as it is written now . Knowing how it ends Magnus and later others known and new characters could launch/try launch an alternative passing of events/history/timeline. This way GW could still hold to their End Times material and we could have new stuff without only bringing details to the old timeline. This way we could have a sort of second go to save a doomed world. A detailed warhammer world staging scene would still be around for a new drama. What I like about Fantasy is unenhanced mostly mortals battling supernatural and superhuman adversary, just hanging right there on the edge (it does not feel that way with Age of ground marines, so not really a grimdark).

I personally have a total different point of view from the original warhammer timeline back in 1st ed (which you can find online if your lucky or dig deep enough) then later GW changed it as doomed - the old time line puts the warhammer world in a forever time loop forever playing out its short timeline - there is some reasons for such but they where not fushed out of course and are just head canon. So I am true to the first timeline and see the after changed-editted timeline as just "what people who live there know or think they know" as in the timeline acorrding to teh Empire. So in my book the world can never be destroyed but will never go into a long naritive time wise the way it was meant to be when Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone created it - well I say created but really it was a sort of nod to them themselves.

Understandable feeling, but I believe in AoS and 40k Chaos is not (or is) as strong as in Fantasy. Key difference IMO is that in 40k there are other threats and obstacles for Chaos (and to Imperium) which may make it harder to achieve it's ultimate victory. That are almost as strong as it is. (Necrons, Tyranids, ect.) In AoS it more or less the same reason, but they also almost had their version of End Times in Age of Chaos. Time period when Chaos entered in Mortal Realms and cased the havoc. At the end of this time period Chaos would had it victory if not Sigmar wouldn't stepped in by sending his Stormcast for counter attack to liberate the realms which starts the Age of Sigmar time. And so far in narravive at least Chaos is been pushed back, but Order is still underdog do to how much Chaos and other alliances control the realms.

I'm kinda hoping that the intention of Old World is that it gives them a chance to rewrite a bunch of the stuff, From the time of Kull to the end times, Starting so far back, gives them plenty of time to clean up the story. Working from the chosen timeline gives them 200 years or editions to work on up to redoing the end times (not a retcon like lots of people want, but Agreed that it should be rewritten.)

I'm not sure I fully agree with the idea that the End Times should ultimately be absolute and inevitable. But I will say that a better-written, well-planned and masterfully executed End Times does have its appeal. As the main problem with the original End Times for me really was the extremely poor execution of it. Can't say I'm excited for it leading up to Age of Sigmar though. Don't get me wrong it's not me hating AoS for necessarily any objective reasons. There are many fantastic IPs with very similar type of setting as AoS. But the key issue is -- those are not the type of setting I myself like. Which is why Age of Sigmar simply can't substitute for Warhammer Fantasy as it's successor for me personally even if we have an absolute masterpiece of an End Times get written sometimes in future that absolutely concludes the story of WF is a satisfactory way despite the grim ending. So yeah I don't/won't care for AoS either way regardless of how things turn out in the future with the Old World or a rewritten End Times. Which was why I was in favor of another different future for WF after the End Times arc rather than just leading up the AoS setting as the one true future. Something similiar more structure to the Old WF setting. But I suppose that'll forever remain a beautiful and distant dream as far as GW is concerned.

It depends on what is your goal. Do you want to learn more about the lore to play the game? The easiest way is to buy the army book of your favourite faction and read that. Or do you want the lore for the lore? In that case, I don't really know where there is good summaries of the lore that does not maje you pay also for rules and things like that. Probably internet with wiki sites... But reading Black Library books is also interesting in itself, my usual way is to do as all other books just read the description, and see if the book interest me, maybe find a critic online. For Warhammer Fantasy Battle, one famous book series will be Gotrek and Felix, a dwarf slayer and his biograph adventuring and surviving the worst monsters possible ^^

@@jasonpitts3054 The recommended beginner introduction into the setting of Warhammer Fantasy and its lore would be Gotrek & Felix series since it’s about two characters ( maybe a bunch of other characters ) travelling around the Old World and beyond encountering different enemies and killing them. It is worth noting that Gotrek & Felix is not a bastion of lore accuracy as the writers do make mistakes and there is a pretty big time skip later on in the series, but it’s a fun adventure read for sure. Very self contained the events that take place in the Gotrek & Felix books aren’t suppose to be world changing events or anything. Also one last thing, if you have a favourite race that you are interested in, you can try and get their army books as that is where there most accurate lore is ( most recent edition would be 8th edition army books.) Hopefully I didn’t cause too much confusion and information overload. 😅

I am not including Yuri/Daniel because he had much more of an executioner role than a "Slayer" because Ursun was all chained up by Belakor therefor Yuri didn't have to fight against Ursun first in order to land a killing blow.
