From what little I know about the book, I think the main guy just jumps that alien and starts drowning them, and the alien is scared, trying to get away from this psycho. That's why the girl gets mad and gets on her anti murder soap box. In this though they made the alien attack first, so Tom Holland is justified defending himself and Daisy Ridley comes out looking stupid.
@calcumalators
@calcumalators 3 жыл бұрын
In the book Todd attacks the alien because he spent his whole life learning they're monsters and he's scared. It's only after he stabs it and his panic subsides that he realises the alien was weaker than him and that the alien was scared too. Todd himself realises that what he did was wrong and is incredibly remorseful for what he did

I loved the series of books that this film was made after. I remember actually talking to Patrick Ness, the author, at a school book gathering and him explaining how he would never sell the rights to make a movie because he didn't think a film would be able to recreate his ideas correctly. I got invited to see this movie with some friends who won free tickets. A funny part that Adam didn't mention is that before the guy and the girl get on the boat, the girl is freaking out saying "BUT I CAN'T SWIM!!" and the guy reassures her "Don't worry, we'll stay on the boat!". So afterwards, when it capsizes and the girl is thrashing around in the water, the guy yells to her "JUST SWIM TO THE BOAT!!"
@starryiee
@starryiee 3 жыл бұрын
Also, another thing that Adam kind of glanced over is that the main guy has no motivation to "help" the girl in the beginning. He doesn't know why she escaped from the mayor, he doesn't know the pestertown's plan to take over the spaceship and I cannot recall a single time that she tells him anything (and she doesn't have any time to do so until they actually escape together [which is another really stupid thing because the pestertown men had every advantage and literally stood around watching them escape]). He also doesn't know that they killed the women until the end and, aside from the bully, he seems to trust them (which is shown when he goes straight to the mayor to tell him about the spaceship at the beginning). It's SUCH A MESS.

Honestly, I hate to say it. But when you look at history, particularly christian history (witchcraft), is it really that farfetched or unbelievable? Women have been slaughtered en masse for lesser "reasons" lol. I mean hell, the catholic church have been using the apple of Eden excuse for centuries now to punish, manipulate and control us (as well as men too, all so the church itself remains in power) like when anesthesia was invented it was denied to women giving birth because we "deserved to suffer" 🤦🏼‍♀️. That being said, it was so cringey seeing all those "thought" women turn up and taunt the bad guy. Like, I'm pretty sure if that if they care so little about what they did that they don't even think about it years later, he's not suddenly going to care and be shocked/confused if they "show up" in the thoughts of another WHEN ITS CLEARLY A TRICK. It's such a cheap and crappy "wahman power" moment that's so bloody dumb. It's like the writers said "we want wahman power scene but aren't competent or smart enough at our jobs so we'll just throw in some ridiculous reason and well, people will be happy no matter how terrible because wahman power" 🙄.

I remember liking the books, but as soon as I heard they were making a movie I knew it wouldn't work. While being able to actually hear the Noise would have been pretty cool, overall a movie wouldn't have worked no matter how hard they tried

If you want to read Kaufman’s first draft, it shows that he had a better grasp on how to translate it to the screen. It would have been more subtle, and making Todd much younger would have made his thoughts more believable in the film.

Yeah I read the books too and enjoyed them. Didn't know a movie was being made until watching the video and plot sounding eerily familiar.

But there's still the same twist? How does the book or Kaufman explains how the Town keeps the killing of the women a secret from the main character if they are all infected with Noise?
@thecopperpenguin963
@thecopperpenguin963 3 жыл бұрын
@ My thought on that was that the men were sworn to never reveal that secret to their children until they become men themselves (turning 13 years old). Although most of the adults in Prentisstown, excluding the Mayor, are not very good at hiding their Noise, it was believable enough even though it doesn't fully make sense. All I'm saying is that the novel handles it better.

@Eibon 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ashe1001 It's built up as a ritual, and there's more to it than just "We killed all the women." You not only learn that, but you also have to kill someone else (which is why people are disappearing around the town), and this prepares you to be part of Prentisstown's grand zealot army. If you don't partake, you get killed, too.

I remember reading the series in like, 5th grade and enjoying it. I never actually made it all the way through the 3rd book though. I do specifically remember that there was a part towards the end of the first book or start of the second book where the narrator mentions that he isn’t wearing a shirt because he’d left it on a hill, and closeted gay me was like “Ooh, shirtless guy. Yes, me like.”

@@varadraigaonkar107 I hate almost all YA novels, many better books you can spend reading and learning from than that wannabee movie-franchise style, like they're written with so much visual/momentum in mind that they're practically film scripts with minor soliloquies. This one was ok tho, the script might have been interesting in Kaufmann's hands. It has been like, 8 years tho, and the sequels kinda suck. Edit: From what I remember, the relationship was obviously pretty domineering, and it's easy to hook HS kids with that, and the world doesn't completely avoid the problems Adum mentions, but the concept is unique and gives itself to some graphic text stuff, which is cool, and I seem to remember the priest's death being very atmospheric/gothic, and the commentary tied in well conceptually.
