They worked on logic and precedent, discounting high-risk moves like Worf destroying Monac shipyards or Garak killing Vreenak, as well as Damar's civilian rebellion (they predicted the military one). None of the think tank were military officers with any experience, which counts for a lot in strategy.

What I've always thought about Nog was that he was "Wesley done right". He didn't have everything handed to him because he was some Human wonder, but had to instead work hard and prove himself in the eyes of others who only saw a Ferengi. We, the audience, saw him grow as a person and could empathise with him as he struggled to find a better future for himself and inspired others around him like his own father. Aron Eisenberg did an amazing job in his portrayal of Nog. Just watch the scene where Sisko virtually interrogates Nog to find out his reasons for wanting to join Starfleet and pay attention to Nog's body language and you'll agree.

it is interesting that out of the 3 teenager we watch grow up in the series. Jake, Nog, Weasley. It was the none human that became an officer. I also like the episode after nog lost his leg and he let his depression take over. It show a bit on how returning home could affect someone who just came from a war. I felt it was the strongest of Nog episode. Well at least one of the strongest

I honestly believe that because of how the story was told in DS9 the characters had more time to grow. It was a serial story that character start at a point and don't get reset at the end of the story of the episode. While I like the characters in TNG the truth a lot of them don't get developed. Picard, Worf and Data had the most development.

So well said. I month ago I was pointing out in a online discussion that out of a the only the kids on DS9 actually became successful. Nog and Jake both got into the careers they wanted and had to push to get it. Wesley on TNG was given everything including the natural smarts from the start and still failed. Meanwhile Kirk's era kids all met questionable ends and Janeway's children on her voyage were lucky enough to get to Earth in the first place but we don't know in Canon what happened to them thereafter.

Jake and Nog were both wesley type characters, but wesley fits it better. Jake's character development was amazing as well, but kind of ran out of steam well before the end of the show. The episode "Nor the battle to the strong" is one of my favourite in the series though and it works so well because of his character.

To be fair to Sisko, first season Nog does not present himself like someone who wants to get his act together, or is even aware he has an act to get together. It is only after interacting with Sisko and the other Starfleet personnel that he understood there were other options for him beyond petty crime. Sisko was afraid Nog was a bad influence on Jake without realizing he was being a good influence on Nog. My favorite moment for Nog was asking Jake that if Jake was so beyond money, why did he need Nog's money, when Jake was trying to buy the baseball card. Since it was clear Jake had no respect for the effort Nog had made to earn that money. RIP Aron. Warp factor nine, Mr. Nog,...engage.

The Ferengi would make a great contribution to Starfleet, as they cover a weakness of many Federation species that are "too enlightened" for their own good. Imagine if (through some timey whimey vortex or whatever) Ensign Nog was on Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. They would've had a much better time with trade negotiations…and Nog would _not have stuffed up that arms deal for the iso-kenetic cannon._ [Throw in Garak as well, the Vidiaans would never know they existed because he would make sure none would be left to tell others about them.] Janeway wouldn't have let the Kazon know about replicatior technology at the start if she had his advice. Also being immune to telepathy and psychic attack… you need at least one on every ship. Throw in a cynical Cadassian and a full blooded Betazoid from a now more militant Betazoid culture after their occupation, and Starfleet ships crews are now more versatile and cunning. IMHO Post Dominion a significant number of Ferengi would join, especially female Ferengi that are just as skilled as the males. And while the rules on sexism have just been removed, there will still be cultural lethargy. So a lot of frustrated female Ferengi will be looking for a career path, and they may find the totally non sexist culture of Starfleet welcoming. Male Ferengi still have to make a big behavioural adjustment in interacting with non Ferengi females. Nog had the advantage that the two main females he interacted with could and would beat the crap out of him with ease, to help him transition to a less misogynistic viewpoint - Kira and Jadzia Dax, particularly Dax as she had been a he who knew Ferengi culture well. The Rules of Acquisition could become standard reading for treaty negotiations and diplomacy - "always try to buy peace when the price is low." And the Great Material Continuum will revolutionise logistics. Or to look at it another way, *the Federation will assimilate Ferenginar, they will adapt to service the Federation and add their cultural and biological distinctiveness to it.*

I agree. Plus, while the inconvenience of "laws" and "regulations" will always be annoying to the Ferengi, and there will always be private citizens that skirt those laws at every opportunity, ultimately the Federation is a free society. Free societies are better for business than authoritarian ones. I'm not sure the Ferengi would ever actually join the Federation, but they would certainly protect the Federation if only to protect their own interests. They'd show just enough value to the Federation to make sure the Federation does their dirty work for them. The Ferengi would be an excellent intelligence source as well. They can get all sorts of places Federation members wouldn't ever be able to get close to.

In the scene where Nog is trying to persuade Sisko to sponsor him, I don’t see it as history repeating itself! My cousin growing up always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the British Territorial Army. When he came of age, he enlisted. But after finding out how hard the training is, after 2 weeks, he dropped out. With Nog, I think Sisko thought that, long term, Starfleet would be good for him but needed to know that this wasn’t just something of a phase. That Nog really wanted it and want his real reasons were for wanting to sign up. U can see it in Sisko’s passion as he tries to get Nog’s true feelings out. It’s one of my favourite scenes throughout the entire run of the show. Aron Eisenberg was such an underrated actor.

I have to disagree with Sisko being bigoted when recommending Nog. I think he knew that Nog was going to face discrimination and distrust on top of the difficulties of the academy, and wanted to make sure Nog was prepared for that. Similar to Picard's treatment of Sito in the lower decks. He wasn't convinced that not all Ferengi are bad, he was convinced Nog was ready for the academy.

If I remember correctly, up to that point in the episode, Nog had not explained truthfully why he wanted to join Starfleet. I always saw it as Sisko forcing that answer out of him by pretending to be mean-spirited to the point where Nog became angry. I've always loved how we got to see Nog grow over the course of the show. It's one thing Star Trek didn't do enough of when they got the chance. Yes we saw moments, but I'm not sure they had very many, if any, true changes in the personality, thinking, and life of a single character, which also left marks on moments within the show like they did with Nog. A lot of things made the show great (I.E. the frienemies in Odo and Quark), but I'd argue Nog's arc is one of them.

Nog was absolutely the best character on DS9 and probably all of Trek. Because Aron was a great guy with actual empathy on multiple scales, a rare trait these days. His heart and soul shined through everything he did, including his performance as Nog. He will be missed.

Aron Eisenberg brought an innocence to the species and character. You kept seeing a good person someone who is trying to be a bad person and eventually accepts who he is verses what his people want of him. Without that innocence I don't think it would have worked as well. Aron brought such a likable character to the screen.

Admiral Nog is more like it. I actually think Nog with experience and his natural grasp of strategy and negotiation would make an amazing Admiral. His growth in a few years was amazing and with 20-30 years experience under his belt he would be one of the greatest officers in star fleet and a true asset to the federation, especially in tough or delicate negotiations. Nog said to Sisko that he will never regret recommending him to the academy and I think Nog could easily end up running the academy if not being a top senior Admiral.

Although a shame we did not get to see Nog's Starfleet career post-DS9 it is nice to see in most Beta-Canon he reaches a Captain. One of the better things about Nog and DS9 as a whole is the relatability of the characters. R.I.P. Aron.

The Character arc of Nog was about as Star Trek as Star Trek gets. It was also great from a writing perspective. It exemplifies the "show don't tell" virtue as virtually EVERYRHING is shown rather than told. The only thing that shaped his character that wasn't shown on screen was his mom leaving. That's basically unique to Nog. Every other character has stories to tell that we never see.

A touching tribute and a beautiful and, imo, accurate analysis of the character. Somewhat ironic is fate here, as you are delving into the parts of your main Dominion War series where Nog also begins to have the most impact.

I only just finished going through DS9. It was amazing. At the beginning, I had no idea how important Nog would become. From everything I hear about Aron, he was as kind and energetic as our favorite Ferengi. Godspeed, Mr. Eisenberg. And thank you so much. He was also possibly the most loveable Kazon in the universe. That's saying something. lol

I hated how Nog started out, but loved the way he ended up. This is the great character evolution Aaron and the other DS9 writers are responsible for. One of the many reasons why DS9 is my favorite Trek series.

Rest in peace sir, you will be remembered. Nog was one of the best characters with one of the most interesting arches of any in Star Trek, and that is not hyperbole. He is the classic archetype hero that follows the path of redemption. He even faltered in his own awakening to his own mortality when he lost his leg and lived in a holosuite for a while. That character could not have been played by any other actor nearly as well either.

RIP. You have been memorialized in an inspiring role which so many people are just now beginning to watch. Didn’t know the man personally but he played such a great character. I’ve read so many comments of people identifying with Nog and I somewhat as well. He is the ultimate redeemable character. Rose to duty and such. Anyways, that’s my rant. I’m sorry you’re gone too soon.

Nog was always a favourite of mine. He didn't eschew his culture entirely, but saw himself a part of it but also not defined by it. His difficulties and struggles were, at times, when I was far younger, sometimes on the whinging side. Just I could relate to him as an outsider, someone felt on the outside, looking in, and wanting acceptance. But rewatching, as a middle-aged adult, I can relate to his struggle for identity and purpose. To take care of those he loves. To provide a better life for his loved ones, and himself. He was fallible, but he was valiant. He made mistakes. A lot of them. He endured so much trauma. But even when it nearly broke him, he found the inner strength to rise above and find his way out. He clawed his way out of the depths to rise as far as he had, and he did it with a kind of tenancy that is not only admirable, but astounding. As someone who struggles with trauma and depression, I watch him now as inspiration. He didn't just put his tragedy away behind him -- he had to learn to carry it and cope with it. And that I can certainly relate to. Aron portrayed that struggle with depth and sincerity. And I like how through the rest of the series, you see not subtly limp. In moments of high stress, the limp becomes more noticeable. That is such a subtle element that Aron included, but it reads beautifully to the truth of trauma and depression. Nog carried his wounds with him. But he didn't let them stop him. Aron nailed that. Incidentally, I was fortunate enough to be able to meet Aron Eisenberg twice. He was so friendly, so kind, and so considerate. I'm so genuinely grateful I was able to shake his hand. He will be greatly missed.

I'm rewatching the series (in early season 2 now). Nog was one of many amazing characters, and it was incredible watching him grow over seven years. I love that the novels have continued his story, as Lcdr Nog and his superior(?) Chief O'Brien designed and built the new Watchtower-class Deep Space Nine.

Nog, Quark, and Rom actually assisted and aided me into better understanding the Ferengi as a whole. Yes Quark was the traditional version to the very core of his beliefs but like Nog and Rom he changed too. Perhaps we can learn from the man who gave us a passionate Ferengi Aaron that gave us the best of who the Ferengi were and was as a whole?

Nog would prove once And for all that "courage" and "honor" ARE apart of the Ferengi soul. Aaron brought this character to life and with his passing the universe had truly lost a special star. RIP on that great galactic river of continuum buddy. Man, my eyes won't stop tearing up. It's hard to think someone who brought me such joy is now gone forever. Truthfully Nog's story is the one I relate to the most. Because he wasn't just born with natural ability, he worked hard, cultivated what little he had, went from an outsider, to the premier squadron in Starfleet Academy, Red Squad. Setbacks were just opportunities to this junior officer. Nog was an inspiration and Aaron Eisenberg captured him perfectly.

I would love if the Picard series would do some kind of tribute to Aron/Nog. Maybe mentioning that the career of Captain Nog is required reading at the academy for a class in Strategy and Tactics. Or that Captain Nog's dedication and service led to a big jump in non-Federation species joining Star Fleet.

One aspect of Nog I admire while wanting a life different from what his culture told him he should be. Nog in general took being a Faringi in pride. Not being afraid to act like a Faringi especially showing the virtues and values that Faringi have to offer to the universe. Being able to procure useful items by a complex set of trading, while most Starfleet officers ignorant to their “superior” economic system just got stuck on a waiting list.

Nog set the bar for character development, I felt kind of inspired by his character, through adveristy and stigma he defied all odds and show that a person can be more than a sum of their culture, as humans we are so judgemental and tribal even in the star trek universe, Nog's story was great and I found myself rooting for him when he first asked the Sisco

The Quark character showed impressively that the Ferengi way of profit isn't all bad or at least the Federation way isn't all good, with his famous comparison of the Federation with root beer. Nog took it one step further, by showing that the Ferengi are not the way they are mostly portrayed as by birth, but by culture. Thus showing all of us that we can change and escape the believes and customs we were raised with, if we want.
