It's not about shame, it's about how having class isn't a white or black thing, it transcends race. Anyone, of any color or creed, has the potential to enjoy anything of any class. Some white people were very open around that time in believing black people weren't worthy of the fine things in life because they lacked the "sophistication" to enjoy such things, which, as Mingus said is "a lie an American white man said." This is the opposite of shame.

The bass solo in Cumbia and jazz fusion is so underrated! Despite suffering from the earliest symptoms of his ALS, Mingus still comes in with that absolutely ferocious opening phrase before launching into one of the most recognisable solos of his career. 12 years after your comment was posted and that solo still goes hard! 46 years after the solo was recorded and it still goes hard!!!

I've never heard a story of Wagner getting physically violent with people like Mingus does though. Wagner was psychologically and socially dangerous perhaps (stealing his friend's wife for one) and was Machiavellian, but from what I've read, he became more of a resigned pessimist in the end rather than an angry firebrand lashing out at the world. Mingus is a trip. He must have been a genius for people to continue to work with him. I think his music is good and interesting, thought provoking art, but not that good to suffer physical violence to be a part of it.

Late reply but it’s a parody of “Shortnin’ Bread”, an old plantation song and while there are tons of variations on the lyrics, they’re usually talking about how slaves really liked shortening bread. The original lyrics that Mingus wrote in “Cumbia and Jazz Fusion” (the song in the video) go like: “who said mama’s little baby likes shortening bread who said mama’s little baby likes shortening shortening bread that’s some lie some white man went and said mama’s little baby don’t like no shortening bread mama’s little baby likes truffles mama’s little baby likes caviar mama’s little baby likes all the fine things in life all the things that a real good person should have
