From Chaplin's autobiography: In his autobiography, Chaplin wrote, "During the cutting of The Kid, Samuel Reshevsky, aged seven, the boy champion chess-player of the world, visited the studio ... He had a thin, pale, intense little face with large eyes that stared belligerently when he met people. I had been warned that he was temperamental and that he seldom shook hands with anybody. After his manager had introduced us and spoken a few words, the boy stood staring at me in silence. I went on with my cutting, looking at strips of film. A moment later I turned to him. `Do you like peaches?' `Yes,' he answered. `Well, we have a tree full of them in the garden; you can climb up and get some - at the same time get one for me.' His face lit up. 'Ooh good! Where's the tree?' `Carl will show you,' I said, referring to my publicity man. Fifteen minutes later he returned, elated, with several peaches. That was the beginning of our friendship. Can you play chess?' he asked. I had to admit that I could not. `I'll teach you. Come see me play tonight, I'm playing twenty men at the same time,' he said with braggadocio. I promised and said I would take him to supper afterwards. `Good, I'll get through early.'"

Oh my god! Although I’m a extremely big fan of Charlie Chaplin and I really love him, I didn’t even know that Charlie Chaplin can play chess. What a sport! Everyone can play chess like: Ivan Ljubicic (a tennis player), John Alexander-Arnold (a professional footballer), Albert Einstein (a theoretical physicist) and now even Charlie Chaplin (a comedian), such a brilliant stuff.

Reshevsky's rivalry with Fischer is an interesting one. It seemed like Fischer (at least outwardly) respected Reshevsky, and Reshevsky did not care one bit for Fischer, and Fischer proceeded to crush him in most of their games.
@AUFalcon64
@AUFalcon64 3 жыл бұрын
Reshevsky never played professionally/full time (so wasn't good with opening theory and had a terrible memory but despite that he was able to out calculate anyone), probably because he did so much when he was younger playing all those simuls. I read that Fischer once said that Reshevsky was the best player in the world in 50s, and probably would of been world champion, but at his peak in the Famous tournament in Zurich 1953 the Russians colluded and arranged a bunch of draws to outpoint Reshevsky which resulted in Smyslov becoming world champion as it is likely according to typical Fischer strong opinionated views Reshevsky would of crushed Botvonik in a match.

In retrospect, I've never had a game go really well where I queen side castle either. What I've learned is if you can't king side castle, DON'T CASTLE AT ALL. Have an active king, and have him active early on. On the right board, he's an attacking piece just like any other attacking piece. Or use him to defend backwards pawns and other attacking pieces.

Chaplin was not around thirty six but around thirty four if the game was ever played sometime in 1923, which it likely wasn't. They met in 1921 which is well documented. The photo of the two sitting at the board is likely from 1921 as well, as it appeared in the January 1922 issue of American Chess Bulletin. So at the time of the photo Reshevsky would have been close to his 10th birthday and Chaplin thirty two.

Yeah I read Urcan's article and all the evidence, including quotes from both Reshevsky and Chaplin themselves, points to this being a hoax. Reshevsky noted that the pictures of him and Chaplin were taken only to appear as if they were playing, and that in actuality he didn't think Chaplin knew any chess at all. Chaplin admits the same in his autobiography and the only progression Reshevsky says of the little man's chess abilities is that they were "very poor." Now Reshevsky may have been cold but I don't think he would be harsh/severe enough to call the play in this video "very poor." Then of course, there's the fact that no newspapers or other sources for this game can be found except for the result on chessgames.com.

For White, Rook to D1 would have at least stopped that pawn from advancing to D3... White's Bishop to D3 is also an idea... one more defender of the C2 pawn... Then White's Rook to A2 would further strengthen it as well as stop the pawn on C3 from advancing... Black wouldn't give up the Queen to a Bishop... I don't think this is hopeless... A sticky, tight place for White and definitely a tough, long game is coming, but I've recovered from worse spots. As long as you still have your Queen and another strong piece, like a well-placed Rook or Bishop, it's never hopeless.

On level 5 of Stockfish on Lichess about once in every 20 or 30 games it just sends all its pawns forward. When it plays its normal game, I usually win or draw about half the time, but every single time it has thrown all its pawns at me the result has been my destruction. From childhood I was always told that the all-pawns attack doesn't work and can be easily fended off. So how come Stockfish always wins when it throws them at me? What am I doing wrong?

Like many myths about Reshevsky (such as his REAL age), this game is almost certainly not one played between Reshevsky and Chaplin. While there are photos showing Sammy and Chaplin engaged in casual play, the position is such that Chaplin is just smiling at his own ineptness against Sammy. In 1921 Los Angeles, Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks played a 'silly' sort of game with Sammy on the set of The Three Musketeers (1921) in which they are just being goofy, as evidenced by the look on Sammy's face. And this is pretty much the level of skill most of these 'stars' had at the game. They knew how to play but little beyond that. At best we should take Chaplin at his word in his autobiography when he tells us that when Sammy asked him if he knew how to play he "had to admit that [he] could not." But even if did, the game certainly would be nothing anyone would have thought of recording for posterity so that future generations might see it. In 1922 New York Chaplin DID donate $100 to the tournament committee for the tournament Sammy was going to compete in that October. One article notes that Chaplin "has played against the wonderful lad" but does not mention anything about their playing in New York and most likely is referencing the oft-told story of their photo-op encounter in Los Angeles. Perhaps this is where the "New York" reference came to be attached to the tale.

An interesting game, but the two main reasons this story may not have happened... 1. Chaplin lived in Southern California because that's where he shot all of his movies, so it's unlikely in 1923 that he would have been in New York to play... 2. An exhibition where he was only one of several challengers. As one of the biggest stars in the world it's not out of the question that he would have met a child prodigy chess player. What is questionable is that he would play him as part of a multiplayer exhibition, and then there wouldn't be any photos of the event. So, sadly, as the story is told here, it probably didn't happen.
