Lee Cahill (Charlton Heston), the fairly lean and stalwart owner of a Kenyan safari camp is a former hunter, separated from his wife for years. His son, Rick (John Savage), has returned from a stint with the Green Berets in Viet Nam to help the Kenyan government track down and stop increasingly audacious and violent poachers who have been killing protected species of wildlife in Central Africa, and bring them in dead or alive. As if that wasn’t hard enough, he has to deal with his estranged father, now a safari guide, and with the woman they both love.
When Rick's mother dies, he and his father, Lee, re-connect at the funeral of Lee's ex-wife and Rick's mother. Rick is not surprised when his father shows up late, as usual. Lee is having an affair with his estranged son's former wife. The two men exchange bitter barbs as anthropologist Anne (Maud Adams), Rick's former wife and Lee's current love interest, stands between them looking understandably pained, yet gives no sign of a lingering interest in Rick.
A father and son bound by blood and a love of Africa and its wildlife. The schism between the two men occurred when Lee, formerly a prominent hunter of game latterly adapted to guiding photographic safaris, left Rick's mother, for which the younger Cahill, Rick, has never forgiven him.
Experienced safari guide Lee and his camp manager, Simon (John Rhys-Davies), set off on a photography expedition with a traveling American couple. Rick gets into a small plane to search for poachers killing elephants for their ivory tusks.
Anne shows up for a vacation, and the romantic ingredients are stirred. Simon begins acting decidedly strange.
It is only a matter of time before the paths of Lee and Rick will pass on the dramatically beautiful plains of Kenya. Rick's plane gets into mechanical difficulty, and makes a forced landing, on the vast open expanses of Kenya, within feet of where Lee happens to be parked in his safari truck.
Rick is given full authority to bring about permanent extinguishment of poaching activity, but instead prefers to arrest the malefactors, even after they have attempted to kill him.
A 1984 action-adventure family drama romance film, directed by Marvin J. Chomsky, produced by Robert Halmi, written by David Epstein, cinematography by Ronnie Taylor, starring Charlton Heston (Moses in the "Ten Commandments"), John Savage, Maud Adams, John Rhys-Davies, Connie Booth, Shane Rimmer, Thomas Baptiste, Bill Wright, and Elizabeth McConnell.Topflight Welsh actor John Rhys-Davies works hard at fashioning his ambiguous character. Charlton Heston is basically playing ... Heston. Maud Adams, a Swedish actress and model fluent in five languages, known for her roles in "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974) and then as the title character in "Octopussy" (1983), made her screen debut in "The Boys in the Band" (1970).
"We can't seem to get the Ivory without killing the elephants." That's what Charlton Heston tells a wealthy woman on safari wanting a "souvenir", with the selfish woman determined to get some anyway. She's a cold-hearted reminder of the privileged rich who have no heart when it comes to trinket loving tourists unconcerned about the environment, or laws, and the reason why poachers become so voracious in their desperation to fulfill that desire and make money at the expense of wildlife out in their territory just living their lives. The film deals with the fight against the poachers with father and son team Charlton Heston and John Savage joining forces in spite of personal issues (rivalry over pretty Maud Adams) to prevent this illegal trade.
A worthy attempt is made to balance the scenario's two major issues: control of the poaching problem and the possibility of a reconciliation between the two men, one of whom will face humiliation upon Anne's choice of a mate. However, the narrative doesn't so much flow as lurch every 10 or 15 minutes under the ponderous wispiness of David Epstein's script. Despite its shortcomings, the production's climactic scenes, although steeped in melodrama, combine satisfactorily as a result of capable direction and a proper emphasis upon the need to resolve the adversarial status of the two principals.
This variation of filmdom's old great-white-hunter is a solid film and a primer for conservationists. Enjoyable for the kind of film it is, rather old fashioned in nature. The film's biggest asset is the gorgeous scenery. The cinematography of the Kenyan countryside should be seen on the big screen. Shot entirely on location in Kenya, the director of has captured those aspects of the landscape and the wildlife that never fail to leave mere urbanites impressed. Kenya's bush country and its wildlife are remarkable and cinematographer Ronnie Taylor creates striking imagery. The shots of the various wildlife in their own atmosphere is stunning. Two hours of ''Nairobi Affair'' can leave you feeling as if you've just spent two weeks on a safari with Charlton Heston.

I spent the first 12 years of my life in Zambia and Zimbabwe. In Zim Daddy taught in a Catholic mission school. The campus was 7x17 km. We teachers' kids had the time of our lives roaming, exploring. Cave and rock paintings abounded as did Spitting Cobras and Black Mambas. But the local dogs accompanied us. We had found four puppies apparently abandoned so we placed two in our home and two at our friend's house across the street. Those four dogs grew to become our guardians. No child was ever unprotected as long as those dogs were around. There was one occasion when a lion had wandered off its range and was loose in the bush. The school operated a car pick-up for all the teachers who didn't own cars. They strung barbed wire across our fences. I hated that because I would see the dogs scream when trying to creep under the wire and getting impaled on the barbs. We had brought them up since their mother had disappeared so they were family. In our innocence we used antiseptic cream on their wounds, but we got thrashed for stealing the cream and we never told that it was for the dogs. That would have resulted in another worse thrashing. But our parents allowed us to bring the dogs into the corridor at night. Finally that lion was neutralised. I don't remember how but we could spread our deck chairs out on our spraggly lawns - mostly soil and brown grass. One of our Indian staff had gone on vacation to India and he returned with kites and maanja (razor string). So he taught those of us who could learn (not i. I was and remain an uncoordinated clumsy oaf) to fly and to fight kites, ergo the maanja. One day we brought down a crow, the maanja had ripped through her wing root. We carried her to the doctor who tried his best. He was a Swiss priest who had studied medicine in his effort to make himself useful to his mission. Our crow shared our homes and fluttered as best she could on her good wing. The African children could never understand our empathy with our crow and that lead to a few fights with them. We lost heavily because we were six Indians versus fifty or more Africans. And make no mistake, Africans are the most racist of races and they are the least intelligent of all the races I have encountered. Indians join Grade 1 at age 4 whereas Zambians do so at age 7. And I was obviously the brightest pupil so the Africans bullied me daily. Most people confess to loving school whereas i hated and feared it thanks to those bully Africans. And that brings me to a topic that raises hackles. A Pakistani teacher turned up with his three daughters. All little girls, so we tried to make friends, but they called us haraam. We didn't know what that meant so we jeered them. Things came to a head when one morning the mother dog began screaming. Those Pakistani girls were throwing stones at the mother and her puppies while they were feeding. The Muslim parents were standing by, encouraging the horrendous depravity of their children. We responded by flinging stones back at the girls. They ran home and the Muslim father complained to the Swiss Headmaster of the school. He, in true Christian humility, met every family at their homes to understand the situation. We boys were adamant that those strange non-Christian girls were evil incarnate for who stones puppies? And he, on his frequent visits to the teachers' homes had a very good understanding of the community. Suffice to say that Muslim family was treated like outcasts; their brutish Muslim girls were always made fun of, and eliminated from all our children's play. The African, Indian and European teachers avoided the family, meaning they were never invited to parties or to the term-end games of RISK and MONOPOLY. That was my first encounter with Muslims and those impressions have proven true about that crass, belicose, uncultured, ruffian religion. Our flights back home, Livingstone to Hyderabad, were marked on the luggage, Liv-Lusaka-Nairobi-Bombay. Lusaka-Nairobi flights in the 1970's were by 4-engined propeller airliners (and after by Boeing 707's,). I remember looking through my window to watch those massive propellers start up. Rolls Royce.

⚔️I good contrast -high & dry-movie while retired, and the rains here are relentless. It’s odd that Rich is hunting poachers, without a native African assistant. Why has Rich not set up his truck, to accommodate him for sleeping? The older movies liked to match up, much older men with girl in her late teens or early 20’s. So when I became older, I just unknowingly followed suite. But, there’s a age threshold, occurring when those years, finally catch up, and breaks a relationship.🛡️

A good movie with excellent acting. John Savage plays a former "Green Beret", probably referring to the British Royal Marine Commandos, not the U.S. Army Special Forces. Both are known as "Green Berets". In either case, Savages character makes too many mistakes a real "Green Beret" would not make. This is more the fault of the writers, not of John Savage. The average person watching this movie would never know the mistakes. Some become quite evident when you re-watch the part. Like something simple in the beginning when he goes to fly the plane. He removes the chocks under the wheels by kicking them under the center of the plane. NEVER would happen, the tail wheel would run over them. When he goes to take off you can see the chocks are no where in sight, they were removed so the plane could take off without running over them. When he flies over the poachers he flies way too close, much closer than needed or desired, within easy rifle range. Green Berets don't take stupid, needless chances. When he comes across the tracks crossing the stream he follows directly in their tracks across the open land. NEVER HAPPEN. Great way to get yourself killed in an ambush. A real Green Beret would have followed the stream, up or down, until he could cross the stream somewhere where there was cover, and the they would circle around to ambush the poachers. Knowing he was up against dangerous poachers, his weapon of choice would have been a high capacity automatic like the FN FAL battle rifle in 7.62×51mm NATO with a 20- or 30-round detachable box magazine. NOT A BOLT ACTION RIFLE with a 5 round or less capacity. He would also have approached the first 2 poachers more cautiously, looking out for anyone hidden in the brush standing guard. There are more but you get the idea.

Poachers need to be hunted down the way they hunt down the wildlife. Governments need to empower the rangers to do their jobs p[properly and none of this nonsense of arresting them and bringing them to justice. The only justice they deserve is the same end they had planned for the wildlife.

One does wonder what made Chuck Heston lend his talent to such a project? Was he still young and needed the little money they offered him, was it because he wanted to kiss Maud Adams in an African setting?

This movie is pathetic. The plot is so basic and boring. The young game department warden can't act. It copies the old African movies of decades ago with the token Masai dance and clips of crocodiles and hippos randomly inserted for no reason. The movie has no 'oomph' whatsoever. 😢
