Today we're discussing the Charmed Reboot and Charmed as a whole, and the idea of Vanquish Spells... it is ethical? Is it moral? Eloy from The Turnout breaks it down in this video essay, discussing Vanquishing theories, historical equivalencies, and making some jokes along the way! We talk a lot about Macy, Mel, Maggie, Celeste, Godric, Abigael, Parker, Alastor Caine, Hunter, and so many others! Let's discuss!

Totally! I’ve been digging the reboot more; they at least have addressed the thing that has been driving me crazy since the original. That said, they bring it up and then forget it about it, but that’s a general thought on most of season 2 anyway, so it’s just another thing to tighten up for season 3

I do agree that there is a grey area when it comes to good verses evil at the end of the day it's about power. In the new series we see way more of the sisters mingling with other witches early on where as the OG's didn't at least in the beginning any way. Prue mistrusted most who approached (and she was right to mistrust) them as everyone was after their powers or seeking to use them as tools. The Vera-Vaughn sisterhood should be more grey because a fellow witch killed there mother and Fiona became a complete crazy person from the elders wrong doing placing her in Tartarus. Where the Haliwells had a destiny set in stone by prophecy the Vera-vaughns Don't have one other than to be the current holders of there power of 3. They haven't killed nearly as many demons as their OG counterparts at this point because Marisol was more passive unlike the witches of the Warren line . the Haliwells were taught to vanquish through the book and grams distain for demons and warlocks.
@TheTurnout
@TheTurnout 4 жыл бұрын
True, it was a much harder line in the original Charmed and I think that’s another example of who the two shows are similar but not the same. The new charmed ones aren’t as “kill kill kill” as the OG, and they are getting a lot of mixed messaging as time goes on, but then continue to fall into easy Mindsets of good vs evil when times gets rough. I think also their body count isn’t nearly as high because they didn’t have powers for much of season 2.

@@TheTurnout also with the Halliwell's it was kill or be killed from day one literally which is why gram bound their magic and errased their memories.
@TheTurnout

Fair point! A lot of the new Charmed is more about learning how to wield magic and whatnot and less about straight up survival. Which is also one of the reasons why you have moments where they have gone after demons without being attacked first.

Hence the problem I have with season 2, season 1 tried to address it by having Macy be half demon and having her connect to Medusa season 2 tries to ignore it if it's not convenient to the plot and it's not just Mel and Maggie who are made to forget about Macy's demon side and what happened in season 1 when she gave in but also Macy by how she treats Abigael Charmed as a franchise has some wiggle room when it comes to all this I guess, unlike let's say supernatural the charmed ones both from the OG and reboot don't hunt demons they usually find themselves in position where the have to defend themselves or others so they're forced to kill the demons, it's a simple black and white world set up where they are always in a defensive mode and only ever go on the offensive when necessary limiting the chance of meeting innocent demons
@TheTurnout
@TheTurnout 4 жыл бұрын
You’re not wrong, since they usually are on the defensive and fighting Demons who wish them/innocents harm, but Medusa is a good example of even a demon who is going bad stuff, causing harm, but their first instinct wasn’t to just instantly kill her. They reasoned with her instead. Just saying that from the demon’s side, witches are definitely the bad ones.

@@TheTurnout Not just Medusa, Chloe also the best thing about the Reboot and mostly season 1 is that despite the elders telling them the was no other way they kept finding another way something I don't think the lost case in point Helen's darklighter who Harry wanted to just kill Maggie wanted to reach and she did. Season 2 losing the demon of the week format kinder lost that part of them to shine this season Unlike the original Charmed ones Mel Macy and Maggie do try to work in the grey if the can, I just don't think the like Abigael hence they treatment yet when she was captured by Godric with Mel they rescued her also despite nolonger being of any use as the ex overlord Like the saying goes "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" the show shows this by having characters like Godric and Abigael to tell the other side's story

Nice essay! And I must say I really do like how the show handles these complex moral issues. Except when it comes to half demons. I was so frustrated when Maggie and Mel were discussing Parker and how because he was half demon that meant he was doomed to evil and I am like, "Did you forget your SISTER Macy is half demon too?" I do find it interesting how the show tried to make parallels between Abby and Macy because of their half demon sides. Also having a SOUL is not proof that one is inherently good as any True Crime buff will tell you that. Unlike in OC Charmed, where they justified their hatred of killing anything Non human until the Final season where they had to confront killing other witches. A fanfic series by RFk on Fanfiction.net handles these same topics as well the differences between the show's version of witches and Wicca. www.fanfiction.net/s/970122/1/Neighbors Definitely a recommended read for any Charmed fan.

To me you’re argument doesn’t stand at least in the original series (I get the point in the reboot) cause the role of witches was to protect innocents or human beings as a whole against supernatural threats (usually demons), exactly like the Slayer in Buffy. That also how they started things in the reboot and then it was not about the innocents but about just other witches. But I have to admit that the demons in the reboot (or at least season 2) are different from the ones in the Original. In the bottom line for me it’s okay if it’s to protect the powerless and if demons do go after humans
@TheTurnout

What if there was some kind of demon jail instead? Is the answer to every demon who might wish innocents a varying level of harm mean they need to be killed by the "good guys"?

The Turnout I don’t know to me it’s just within the mythology of the show. You can see it as a metaphor like vainquishing your own demons. Like in Buffy

I agree, but I also kind of dig it when Buffy found the demon bar (Willy’s) and was like “wait you just hangout and play cards for kittens?” And at no time was it “let’s burn this place to the ground and smite them all!” 😂

I don't really care for Charmed. Not really sure why you'd waste your time watching it, much less reviewing it. But then again, I did watch a few minutes of your video, so who am I to talk. Still, I'd like to throw in my two Irish pounds. I feel like you are taking this waaaaaay to seriously. It's just a TV show of imaginary characters and yet here you are discussing it like its Macbeth 2.0. The plot was hollow from day one, but it did provide gorgeous eye candy for teenage me. Faux intellectualism can only take you so far. Good Vs Evil is vital to us as a species of Ape. This has been a fixture of the hominin experience for millions of years. Black Lives Matter prefer to ignore the nuance and tarnish the entire police force as evil. Trump supporters consider being gay evil. America considers Russia evil. It's in our nature to tarnish other groups without recognising the grey areas. TV shows need to address the bottom line first - Satisfactory Ratings. Much like evolution, if you are not in it to win it, you lose it. And right now, the audience ratings for the Charmed Reboot are no higher than 54%, 38% for Season One alone. 850,000 views for season two, tells you all your need to know about how poor this reboot is. The original Charmed TV series ended its final season with 3.5 million views. Still abysmal, but much more well received than this reboot. A better discussion for a video would be, "Why did Charmed connect with audiences significantly more than the Charmed Reboot? I'd love to see a video on that subject.
@TheTurnout

I dig the show myself, but to each their own. I'm completely okay with people not liking stuff I like or liking stuff I don't like, personally. That said, I find it's a great idea to think critically about any media you consume. "Overthinking if better than underthinking" after all. To answer you last question, it's not really great for a video because it's easily answered. A combination of nostalgia, edition wars, and the older actors trashing the new show even before it was released is pretty much responsible for it, even without people having watched a single minute of the show. Or that's how I see it anyway. I'll keep having fun with the show, and asking questions about its themes, ethics, and content, though, cause 1) it's fun, and 2) it hopefully gets people to think beyond the obvious. Thanks for the comment in any case! Cheers!

The Turnout I think the show always intended to explore these things going forward. Charity, obsessed with the greater good killed Marisol yo prevent her from unbinding. Her rigid worldview helped Usher in the rise of the Source who turned out to be Macy. The Elders who maintained this oppressive structure got killed. We saw the Sarcanna and Fiona felt oppressed by the structure the Elders set up. And there’s a reason Medusa was reasoned with too.

I think the reboot has done that very much so this season. It's one of the reasons I actually don't like it now. I think it's a disaster. Charmed is a show about three sisters who happen to witches and their destiny is to save the world from demons. Same was said about the reboot at first. Harry told the girls in the pilot it was their destiny to vanquish demons and demons are evil. They kill innocents. Most of them. Therefor they have to be killed to save others. There is a grey area, we saw that with Medusa and they did that episode really well. It's one of the better episodes of Season one. Season Two there's more of a grey area present, they hardly vanquish anything. They let innocents die. They always seem to let demons go, depending on who's writing the episode. Sometimes that's understandable but it's not always. Especially in Abby's case. It's pretty obvious that many of these new writers haven't seen the original show which the reboot is riding off of and they want to turn it into a dark soap opera about Witches and demons. That might work for now but it's not gonna work in the long term. Part of the success of the show is these strong women, getting out there and saving the day. It's the empowerment. The Halliwells would have vanquished Abby long ago. I think the girls in Season 1 would have too because Carter and the writers really got Charmed. They were able to capture the essence of the show but also make it their own. Now it's lost it's way. They've lost what made the show "Charmed". It's all gimmicks. Even the ships don't feel authentic now. They used to. I want to see demons that are scary, that are causing mayhem. I want to see the girls jump in and save the day. Maybe they'll do better in Season 3..they've got long enough to put together a decent season.

Well, I’m using the reboot as my example because that’s what I’m watching now, but I’ve always thought that the whole “witches are good and demons are bad” hard lines just never made sense, even in the original series. Yes, the original charmed ones would have “vanquished” Abigael a long time should, but I think that proves my point. They were so brainwashed into that way of thinking and it makes the viewers totally okay with that concept, even though Abigael is overall very helpful. I loved the Medusa episode as well (I was going to use it in the video but could get a good clean copy of the episode) and is a good example, similar to the Kyon Queen. Once you understand the demon, it can be dealt with without having to murder them. I appreciate you engagement here, by the way, and thanks for checking out my video. Cheers!
