Man after this wbr season I'd love to see Chase and Brian, with Beau helping chase and Luke helping Brian, do a bike build race kinda thing with like some groms or that sort of bike. Brian has been teaching Chase so much stuff I think it'd be awesome to see them build "against" each other. Also OC: I wear DC skate shoes, specifically graffik ses or dress shoes for work.

First time rebuilding USD forks, I went super cheap. 2” piece of abs pipe from Home Depot, and a ratchet strap to compress the spring. It was terrible, and absolutely terrifying, but a great learning experience! Convinced me to go ahead and buy the $200 tool to do it right. Not only was it immeasurably less sketchy, but it takes MUCH less time with the good tools.

Did the same exact thing, except I decided for the same amount, I’d be better off taking it in to a shop. Now I don’t ever have to worry about if I damaged something, or if I put them together properly. That being said, one day I’d still like to buy a foot operated fork spring compressor and learn how to do USD forks.

i hate to be that guy but i rebuilt the forks on my sfv-650 twice. first time was after i hit a curb (too fast around a roundabout in my first few months of riding-stupid i know) i bought aftermarket replacement fork tubes, but because i had to buy a new front wheel i didn’t want to spend money on new seals, bushings, etc. MISTAKE! one of them started leaking a few months later. it was so stupid because i ended up doing the 6-7 hours of labor twice ALL TO SAVE LIKE $90. wasn’t too bad, as i was upgrading headlight and changing tire anyway. second time around and it hasn’t leaked a drop. amazing what happens when you don’t reuse hydraulic seals… i should note that i’m an electrician by trade, not a mechanic. i haven’t paid anyone to work on any of my vehicles in a long time, to me it’s part of the fun.

Second time out after rebuilding the forks 1/4 of the damn clutch basket cracked off and is god knows where in the engine. Bike had -1+2 reduced gearing too they really messed up with the 08 I wish I could go back in time and pick a bike that isn't the first year of a generation change now I'm going to have the displeasure of pulling the engine out or possibly getting away with dropping the oil pan and finding 100% of the pieces if I'm super lucky.

8:12 that's exactly how I was struggling to get my forks apart, when I changed the seals the first time. Second time I got the right tools beforehand and it was actually fun working on the forks :D

If you just remove the damper bolt instead of struggling with the fork cap. The whole internals just slide out of the fork. Makes life a hell of a lot easier.

The fork bushings are overlooked by most when they replace fork seals because of a leak… if the bushes are worn, the new seals will leak in a short time due to the excess movement. I always replace both the seals and the bushes to save the pain and cost and time involved.

Hey guys, really liked the video. Can you tell me how much milimeters are left exposed from the fork when it bottoms out? I cannot find this information anywhere

Don't think they mentioned this but I would also back the preload all the way off to lessen the cap from popping as hard as it did and make compressing the white down easier.

as far as I know, rebound and preload is on the top of the fork and compression adjustment is on the bottom...but correct me, if this is some different type of forks but this shoud apply to majority of forks

Rebuilding yourself isn’t a problem until you have to do “up-side-down” forks. A good fork spring compressor will cost you $200 alone, and you change them so infrequently (about every 10,000 miles) that most people opt to pay a tech the same amount and skip the hassle. I can say for myself, that I always take the forks off the bike myself, but just leave the hard and delicate stuff to the professionals (unless I’m working on a right side up fork).

You can have good enough fork compressors for much less and make one yourself for even less, imo it's a good investment especially if have a couple bikes turnaround in your garage.
@ftfpersonal6046
@ftfpersonal6046 2 жыл бұрын
@@AntaresSQ01 For sure, and I do have two bikes in the garage although one has right side up forks which are way easier (just need wrenching tools and a vice). Already tried making one myself out of PVC, some long bolts, and ratchet straps without success. I was too sketched out that I would break or damage the fork or something would snap off and hit me in the face. Never tried the proper, rigid, hand style fork spring compressor tool, as there was too long of a turnaround to get the tool no matter where I looked. Best bet for me at the time was either the $200 foot operated one or taking it in to a tech. Wouldn’t be opposed to giving it a shot in the future though, although at that point I may consider just getting the expensive one.

I rebuild my own all the time....it is my job though, so kinda cheating. The forks on my 2003/4 zx6 are brilliant, they have quick change seals, I can do both forks in under an hour, from in the bike, seals and oil changed, and back in the bike again. 👍

@@heightskings6693 I love my 03/04 ones, I even have a set on my 1994 zxr400 race bike. What issue was you having with them? I've found them to be the easiest set of USD forks to do seals on.

@@dennisclark9544 niceeeee.... on my 2nd set one of them started to leak like crazy out of nowhere , on my commute to work there’s only 1 hard bump .... when I got home all the oil was on the floor and rotor etc... I took it to my buddy he said it wasn’t the seal but that it was a o ring that wouldn’t seal or something like that , and that he tried to drill out the set screw but even when he boar’d it out it still wasn’t sealing , he tried it 3 different times ... he was on the kawasaki race team in the early 90’s and has a race bike mechanic back ground and race bike shop so I knew he wasn’t BS’ing me ... That same day I got some 0506’s and he did the seals and cleaned them up nice .... he thinks that maybe that fork was just bad originally .. kinda sucked cuz I had got them redone like 6 months before that happened .

Sorry that was painful to watch, I had my S1000XR+s electronic forks apart and rebuilt in under 2hrs... By myself... Get a spring compressor and some shims to hold the forks, unscrew cap then it's plain sailing.
