Super interesting video. I'm a Garmin user (6x Pro) but have been curious about the Whoop. I'll admit that when I bought the 6x Pro I didn't know about the body batter feature (was using a base model vivoactive 3 before that) but I LOVE it. Seriously helps me make sure I'm getting good recovery in between hard efforts. I don't think I used to give myself enough recovery time, but the body battery has helped me reign that in. Good stuff!

Thank you. I am always anxious the day before a race or cycling with significant mileage.. Garmin body battery works like magic. I think with the Training Readiness, the game has changed tables significantly. Thank for the great content.

I appreciate this visual head-to-head comparison. I like the clean interface of the Whoop, but that high subscription fee is hard to justify. And nice to learn that running an ultra doesn’t seem to hammer you as much as building gingerbread houses! 😀

really helpful video. i am a garmin owner who was considering getting a whoop b/c it seemed like i would get more insights. however, good to know that the body battery already synthesizes it all quite nicely using RHR, HRV and other data points. also good to know you don't need your body battery to be close to 100 before a big race

Hi, great video. I’ve been using Whoop 3.0 for about a year before I switched to Fenix 6, and I’m glad I did. Fenix 6 is much more accurate and you can use HR strap during workout and that makes Fenix 6 even more accurate then Whoop. Body battery makes a lot more sense, because it’s all day metric. Whoop is only one time number. And Fenix 6 counts your recovery by the hour after workout as well and that makes more sense too. Over all Fenix 6 and its Firstbeat performance analytics for stress, recovery and workout are much more useful and accurate if you understand and learn the way they work. Thanks for awesome video. 😉

I just got the Whoop 4.0 and I do not like it. I’m thinking of just moving to the Fénix. I hate that I can’t spot check SpO2 and I really don’t feel it’s very accurate overall. It also keeps disconnecting from the app and has a shorter battery life. Thanks for listening 😂

I have had Garmins in the past but I have had a Whoop band for nearly 18 months. I will be going back to Garmin when my subscription ends. I have enjoyed having the extra analytics that Garmin didn’t have at the start but have got to the point where I don’t feel I am learning anything new about myself. I enjoyed not being connected to my phone constantly without notifications on my wrist, but now I have a baby and if I don’t notice a cry for help with a nappy explosion it doesn’t go down well with my other half. I have also found that I have kept my Garmin and will still use it on runs so I am developing multiple tan line which only needs to be one

lol, funny you mention the baby thing. It's real! People always wonder why I need to be so connected... This is exactly why. 4 young kids at home = need to stay in the loop. The tan line is a badge of honor.

Great video Dave, interesting to see of that kind of value you can get out of these gadgets regarding recovery/body battery measurement. However the biggest downside (that overweights all of the upsides) is the anxiety of not getting the targets and loosing sleep over that anxiety. Anxiety is one of the main factors of sleep deprivation and getting info that you are only 5% recovered after your restless night, will make the next night even more stress full for me, which will result in even more bad data, which will cause even worse sleep and the cycle will go on... 😁

Absolutely. That's a big reason why I try not to read too much into the numbers. I had an ultra planned, and I was going to run it despite my metrics indicating that I wasn't in tip top shape. I guess these tools are nice to have but you can't let them run your life.

You're not wrong but things don't always go to planned. We've got a new baby in the house and that kind of turned things upside down. Instead I went into this one with low expectations but it actually turned out alright. Feeling pretty good just a few days later! Thanks for watching.

Nice video. I also have a garmin and a whoop 3.0...still waiting for my 4.0. I rely solely on my whoop to calculate recovery mainly due to it being very comfortable and easy to sleep with. Also, whoops algorithms seem to be pretty accurate and align closely with how I feel. After all, Whoops sole purpose is to track sleep and recovery so I would hope that the information would be accurate. The subscription thing kinda sucks but they are constantly improving their algorithms and I know I can rely on the data.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I’ve been using my Garmin Fenix 5x Plus for 3yrs now and love it (Garmin HRM pro for past year also). Been looking into maybe switching to Whoop mainly due to fact I can’t sleep with such a large watch on my wrist. So I miss out on the body battery for the most important part of recovery. Like everyone though it’s the monthly fee coming out every month is what’s putting me off. But if you pay the 12/24 month up front you can get 3yrs for cost of new Fenix series.

I think they both bring value but the Garmin is the better value without a monthly subscription. I love my fenix 6X sapphire and have been wearing Garmin fenix watches since the 3. My Garmin pretty much told me I had Covid too based on RHR, HR, Stress, and Body Battery. Pretty cool stuff!

There’s a subset of people like myself that, as you do, work in an office setting, & I meet clients often. That said, I prefer a regular watch that doesn’t make me look at my wrist when with clients by buzzing buzzing me, making them feel that I need to end the meeting & that I have to leave. So, having a fitness tracker that doesn’t ever bother me is my preference. I’ll check my phone for data when I have time. Thanks, great video.

Interesting perspective. You could also use "do not disturb" mode on a garmin but I get where you're coming from. It can be a distraction.

Dave, love your videos and content. I recently picked up the Epix 2 and also am a Whoop user. I tried Whoop and have a few months left but am wondering if both are necessary. The challenge I am having is I don't want to wear the Epix 24/7 especially during the day. Do you think body battery would be accurate if I wore my Garmin after work through the night and during my morning workouts. My job is pretty sedentary so I don't see much benefit in wearing all day. Do you agree? I especially like the new stamina feature but want it to be accurate. I feel like the most important time to wear the Garmin is before bed, during sleep and during activity. Love your feedback. I wish Garmin would upgrade the Vivosmart 4 band so it worked flawlessly with the Epix 2.

If you don't wear the watch all day the Body Battery metric probably won't be very accurate. Even if you have a sedentary job the watch will detect moments of high/low stress and your heart rate which all effect BB. That said, I'm sure you could still gain some value from it even if you weren't wearing it 24/7. Hope that helps!

I have a Garmin Fenix 5. Loved it. Got the Fenix 6 Pro. I love it even more. After a year with the Fenix 6 i can no longer see the information on the screen. I can only access information through the app now. Not happy... they aren’t cheap! I’m contemplating getting Whoop now and going back to my Fenix 5 since the screen and lighting is perfect there. That’s a lot of money to invest in Garmin and not have a screen with the Fenix 6. Thanks for the review of the Whoop!

I have find usefull combine body battery with recovery time (hours or days). Because, as you mentiond, BB will get increase after long sleep. Even more if there will be two days in row without activity and long sleep. But that doesnt mean that we are recoverd well... I am very satisfied with Garmin data :) I have compared them to some semiprofi tools and they are very very close.

Nothing like Garmin for me. I had Garmin for over 10 years, from Garmin 10 to 935xt, 500 to 1030 Edge, to swim...and never had any issues...

Great video as always! I have both the Whoop 4.0 and a Fenix 6. I really appreciate how the data is presented and ability to track trends and how they affect me over time (on the Whoop). To me - that’s the most valuable part of it. It’s such a simply thing to track, I’m surprised not much else does this. I love my Fenix - but the Whoop provides good info for me that I find benefit from and don’t feel like the cost is that bad (if you pay for the longer subscription). Like you said - the Whoop is just a band. I will always need a watch!

The same it’s for me. I wear a Wahoo Elemnt Rival as a watch (much less expensive and complicated than the Garmin Fenix) and the Whoop 4.0 for recovery. I workout 1h daily (Thriatlon, Boxing, Weighs…) and I love Whoop to avoid injuries

Great vidoe. Trying to find the right fitness tracker for me. I workout everyday. Mostly strength training in the gym followed by a short bike or eliptical. I run a 5k only about 2 days a week and maybe a kettlebell workout once a week. . So really not out doors. Have been trying out the fenix 6, but can't wear it during kettlebell workouts. Thinking maybe a whoop, or keep garmin. Don't use the GPS on fenix 6 too often. Also, does Garmin measure HRV for recovery? I know whoop does. What do you think would be best for me. Thanks. and keep up the great work.

Thanks! Garmin does track HRV but oddly it doesn't display that raw data. Instead they use HRV as a key metric in stress tracking and body battery.

Does the whoop kind of get to know you over time ? I train between 20-30 hours a week. I’m afraid that it will tell me that my strain is really high if it doesn’t adjust itself to my training load …

I've been a Whoop user for ~ 2yrs and got the Fenix 6s about 3 months ago. Since a firmware update in around October (for the 3.0), and on the 4.0 I'm seeing almost perfect agreement between body battery and recovery score. Right now the only advantage I'm seeing in Whoop is the health metrics/respiratory rate as I do find it helpful in mapping out "I think I'm getting sick". My Whoop subscription ends in March and I'm having a hard time convincing myself to keep paying $18 a month for it, unless some major new features on the software side drop. With the impending Fenix 7, I feel like it'll be an even harder sell. If Garmin could figure out a better online platform for Connect that let me see multiple months of data (particularly HRV, body battery, and sleep) I would probably leave Whoop behind.

Interesting video I think what would be helpful is -How did you actually feel compared to their measurements? did you feel 50% recovered or closer to 30%? -when did you actually wake up? Was Whoop right or was the Fenix? -Which HR was right? I had a whoop for years. I think $30 for their info a month was genuine robbery. The strap itself is fine but its HRM is not nearly what you get in any high end sports watch at this point. It has become a lifestyle flex piece IMO.

I mean, it’s hard to quantify what 30% vs 50% actually feels like lol. Kind of splitting hairs at that point. In reality I think they’re both somewhat useful but I agree that the monthly fee is a bit much. Fortunately the Whoop 4.0 has much better accuracy than the older Whoop 3.0 band you can find that info in my full Whoop 4.0 review. Thanks for watching!

Yes, thumbs up. For me. I went with whoop 4.0. I don't go anywhere without my phone in most cases. I don't want to be distracted by looking at my wrist and trying to see data. $1. a day is nothing in my thoughts. I did not like the burning sensation I felt when I first wore it. But going to bed with it the following day, I do not notice it anymore. I will grab my Garmin GPS unit if I want accurate GPS tracking. I can dial that thing in really tight. My sport is MTB. The real plus for me with Whoop is how compact it is. I am a repair tech and use my hands and have them inside the equipment. So Whoop, being so small and tight is very important to me. It is a pain when your hands get stuck because of a wrist gadget hanging up on wires and equipment.

Has anyone bought a cheaper Garmin fitness band etc. to wear when sleeping to take advantage of body battery while wearing bulkier Garmin GPS watch throughout the day? I hate wearing my Instinct to bed but would really like to take advantage of the body battery feature. Would data even sync across 2 devices on Garmin Connect?

Thank you for this. My biggest concern with Garmin has been their sleep metrics. I want a GPS watch once my Whoop memebership expires and this helped tremendously. One quick question, How is Coros sleep tracking?

Hey there. I have a coros apex. Sleep tracking is just… bad? See, if you wake up, use the toilet and go drink a glass of water, 99% of the time the watch uses this info as you fully wake up and does not track any sleep after that

COROS Sleep tracking isn't as advanced as the competition from Polar, Garmin, Whoop, etc... It's there, and it's good enough to get an idea of what's going on with your sleep. But that's about it. They also don't use the sleep metric for anything more than displaying it in the dashboard. For instance, it's not used to gauge recovery like on Garmin, Polar, or Whoop.

The calories burned on garmin is supposed to be plus minus 7% variance compared to hospital grade equipment. First beat (what garmin uses) has a white paper on this actually thats pretty interesting if you are nerdy like me. Cant speak to the whoop numbers but first beat algorithm is supposed to be the most accurate out there from third party tests with hospital grade equipment being the baseline.

Yes, that's probably the best way to do it other than wearing the Whoop up on your bicept.

Comparing price. Fenix 7XSS is 4 years of Whoop price if the Whoop price remains the same and we pay the cheapest 24 month subscription rather than monthly. I expect my garmin to go farther than that. But the advantage with Whoop is newer hardware and newer features every 6 months ig,

Body battery is still a metric that doesn't sync from device to device. It will take your watch a couple of days to calibrate to your body battery. Body Battery Sync is coming soon via a firmware update.

In my testing so far the 4 is much more accurate than the 3. I had pretty bad luck with the raw HR data coming from the 3.0.

Considering that a base model fenix 6 can be had for about 400$ and a body battery compatible forerunner for less than half, all with significantly more features I find it very hard to justify the monthly price of the whoop. Also, I live in the alps, so the extra sensors in the watch like the altimeter make a lot of sense for me and the whoop band would be a significant down grade.

Very interesting video. Whoop is such an interesting device. I feel like so many other device can track the same metrics. Many of those devices actually track this stuff more accurately. But everyone loves the way Whoop presents the data. #whoopCult I expect a lot of companies will copy it. I just hope that everyone doesn't start adding a monthly fee for presenting the data to us. 🤮

Yup. I really like how whoop presents the data. It's easily digestible instead of a bunch of numbers that mean nothing. That said, wearing 2 devices seems silly especially with one having a monthly fee. If Garmin managed to clone the whoop metrics into Body Battery I think Whoop would have a real problem lol.

On the whoop data of the ultra day you have HR peaks of +/- 200 outside of the event. Do you have an explanation for this or is it just faulty measurements? My old whoop 3.0 has these false measurements all the time and really messed up the strain score for each day

Great video I would definitely chose an upfront cost over the subscription. The subscription can and most likely increase over time. Hey, just one question. Why did your stress level increase just before you went to bed? Did your wife have anything to do with that😜

Good question, I've been seeing stress sporadically in my sleep patterns in Body Battery. I suspect it had something to do with the glass of wine that I had during dinner. It seems that triggers some "Stress" in Body Battery!

It only works with certain activities mainly road running and cycling unless you have a Fenix or higher end forerunner which support Mountain Biking and Trail Running.

Why does the whoop band seem to show you repeatedly spike to 200bpm? For a device that is heavily reliant on good quality heart rate it's a bit of a concern to see these spikes.

The spikes make sense during workouts but I think in some other areas it may have been adjusting the strap or removing the device momentarily... Not really sure! The good news is that the spikes don't seem to effect the data too much. I wonder if they filter those out?

Whoop data are strange to me. I think Garmin has more information. During Ultra events the body battery is useless. At my last ultra I went down from 62 to 11 during the first 4h. The next 3.5h it went down to 5. And 5 stayed until 2am in the night. So this makes no sense and on the other hand it looks like that I go into minus and it takes time and sleep to come back. It should show this, but 5 seems to be the end of the chart. What I can see, it does not lean, there is no zeroing out.

It would be nice to understand the scale of the chart. I think I understand why we can't go negative as that would essentially mean we're dead lol. But it would make sense to go to 0 and stay there until recovery.

I don't think you can get lower than 5. I was really sick the last week of October with strep throat and high fever. Body Battery drained -71 to a Body Battery of 10 on Friday and then drained more on Saturday to a Body Battery low of 5. High stress the entire time.

Stress should not be looked at as bad. When he talks about building the stuff with his kids… it just means you’re moving around so your heart race is up which = stress. It’s healthy stress. “Maybe I was stressed I dunno” …. This is the problem with people hyper analyzing everything.
